Journeyers and a sojourn of Dadar - Tirunelveli express in a candid morning at Margao Railway station. Journey in 22629 is a joy. Through out the way the train passes through various picturesque places.

Off late I am observing station names are being suffixed a number, in brackets. Ex: NZM(7), MTJ*10), PUNE(6), HRR(3), MYS(6) etc. Can any one tell me what these numbers are indicating?

Thanks for the reply, I could guess it but confused as there several major stations where no number (number of available PFs) is given. Ex. Sangli. (SLI) Palas (PSA). Any information on this?

The SWR used to have the world famous landmark of Stone Chariot of Hampi as its logo. Very few of the locos had it printed on their hood. But for my surprise I recently observed loco 40036 having a different logo!!. Why did this change occur? Is there any reason? The previous logo was very antique, where as the newer looks like a commercial one.

Who is the authority to allot locos to trains? What are the measurements to provide engines to trains?. I have verity of questions regarding this.
Ex. The Karnataka Express is actually a Bangalore bound train. But it never runs on SWR Locos. A CNB / BSL WAP4 is often seen hauling this train till ET, and from ET the famous WDM3A/3D twins bring the train to SBC.
1) What is the benefit that ET Shed or WCR getting by providing a loco from their shed to some other zone?
2)
...
Which shed will bear the expenses that are incurred during the run of these huge machines?
3) Why dont the UBL or KJM locos pull the Karnataka express till ET?
4) Why cant the loco change take place at MMR? I have seen Karnataka Samparka Kranti getting loco changed from WDP4 to a WAP4.

1. No benefit. It is just operational convenience, links decided by Railway Board.
.
2. Expenses borne by IR as a whole (Not too sure on this)
.
3. Again, a Railway Board

policy. Even we feel the same that SWR locos should haul this train.
.
4. A valid question, but since ET Alco twins are hauling at present, loco change takes place at ET so that twins return home.

Another such eg, 15629/15929 Chennai Egmore Guwahati/Dibrugarh Exp gets a HWH WAP4 from DGR-VSKP,whether it doesnt even touch HWH,similarly it occassionally gets KGP WDM 3A & regular link is UDL WDM 2A b/w UDL-DBRG...Train doesnt belong to ER/SER..But ER/SER is helping NFR Train to run, same way as NFR helping 12345(ER),12331(ER) with a SGUJ WDP4

Thanks Soumitra. But I still wonder about the RB policies. Like all other departments of government IR does not have common set of rules. They all follow some common rules on give and take / borrow system. As such putting indent to the concerned authority, getting them sanctioned, purchasing and then making payment to the concerned organisation (What ever may be the reason). IR stands unique by having a centralized system of bearing expenses. (correct me if I am wrong). Eager to explore more on assigning Locos.

Very Interesting to see all these loco activities. But still it makes me curious about the methods of linking them. Who will instruct the Loco shed managers to link the locos (that are under their control) to a train? (whether or not the train belongs that particular zone)

I have seen many stations carry "HALT" with their names. What does it mean? Ex. Kaniuru Halt (KYNR), Kanjra Halt (KNJJ), Mhaboob Nagar Town Halt (MHBT), Alur Halt (ALUR), Jnana bharati halt (GNB). etc. What exactly is this halt?

Opening of Flag Stations and Train Halts
1903. Flag stations and train halts required for public conveyance may be opened by Railway Administrations in the following circumstances :
(a) Flag station.
(i) when these are financially justified, and
(ii) the

proposed site is at least 5 KMs. from the station on either side in the case of non-suburban areas.
(b) Train Halts
(i) when there is financial justification for opening a train halt but not for a flag station, and
(ii) In the non-suburban areas, the site of the proposed halt is at least 5 KMs. from the station/halt on either side.
However, if the new halt is otherwise remunerative, or the loss is upto Rs. 10,000 per annum, but infringes the distance limit of 5 KMs., opening of such a halt may be sanctioned by the General Manager of a Zonal Railway in consultation with the FA & CAO.
1904. If these conditions are not fulfilled, a Flag Station or a Train Halt may still be opened as a passenger amenity, if the Railway Administration is satisfied of the need for doing so on grounds of the volume of passenger traffic. In such cases, however, the Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee must be consulted and suitable recommendation made to the Railway Board under whose orders alone such halts may be opened.
1905. In opening New Halts, a Railway Administration must be satisfied that the provision of the halt will not involve the railway in leakage of revenue on account of ticketless travel.

A halt station is a station that is not associated with the end of a block section and has no associated signalboxes and no role in controlling the entry of trains into a block section. These usually serve for picking up or dropping off passengers, etc. at intermediate points in the middle of a long block section. The train proceeds on the flag or lamp signal given by the guard of the train; the duration of the halt is prescribed in the working timetables.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
