Feb 11 2017 (08:33)   Line inspection between Nelamangala, Shravanabelagola ends

It is expected to be operationalby February-end
The inspection of the 110-km railway line between Nelamangala and Shravanabelagola by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) was completed on Friday.
K.A. Manoharan, Commissioner of Railway Safety (Bengaluru), conducted the five-day inspection, which began on February 6.
The track’s suitability was also tested by running the train at 110 km/h.

team, which included Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) Ashok Gupta and Divisional Railway Manager Sanjiv Agarwal, inspected the track, bridges, stations, signal and basic amenities along the route.
Mr. Manoharan, speaking to presspersons at Shravanabelagola, said that the track condition was okay but there were minor issues with regard to other things.
“The issues that need to be improved have been brought to the notice of officials concerned,” he said.
The line connecting Hassan and Bengaluru via Shravanabelagola was proposed 20 years ago when H.D. Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister.
The line is expected to be operational by the end of this month. Mr. Gupta said that he was hopeful that the train would run by the end of February.
‘Remarkable construction’
Mangaluru Special Correspondent reports:
K.N. Krishnaprasad and T.P. Lokesh from Karnataka Railway Vedike, a rail advocacy group, who witnessed the inspection on Friday, said that the construction was remarkable despite two-decade delay. Platforms at all stations are designed to accommodate a full-train (24 coaches) even as there are no level crossings on the entire section.
An engineer with SWR construction wing however said only one level crossing exists near Soladevanahalli, off Nelamangala, which can be eliminated.
Otherwise, railway under or over bridges are constructed between Nelamangala and Hassan for crossing roads.
This helps operating trains at high speeds, Mr. Prasad said.
Parts of the Bengaluru-Hassan new line (166 km), Chikkabanavara-Nelamangala and Shravanabelagola-Hassan, are already commissioned.

Nov 13 2013 (10:35)   Blow for tycoon Vijay Mallya as Karnataka government confirms new railway WILL cut through his racehorse farm | Mail Online

The sting of bad times doesn't seem to leave Vijay Mallya alone. And the latest blow to the flamboyant business tycoon is iron-clad.
The Karnataka government has decided that the railway line it has committed to build between Bangalore and Hassan will cut through Mallya's stud farm at Kunigal, 75km from the state capital.
It was no sudden development, however. Mallya has a six-year track record of trying to convince the Karnataka government and Indian Railways about the virtues of an alternative alignment.

India-Mercedes Team Principal Vijay Mallya will see a train line cut through his stud farm
Vijay Mallya, chairman of the UB Group, with the winning horse and jockey in 1991. The tycoon owned his first racehorse at 21
The government has now decided to stick to the original alignment, which means the 250-year-old stud farm, known for breeding some of the finest racehorses in India, has to be split wide open.
Karnataka Information & Infrastructure Minister Santosh Lad said that the government had ruled out any change in the alignment of the railway track.
A high-level meeting chaired by him and the infrastructure department secretary decided to divide the stud farm in the ratio of 64:36 to make way for the railway line.
"Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given his approval to retain the original alignment. Approximately 1.05km of railway line will pass through the stud farm. We examined all alternatives, but none were economically feasible," Lad said.
Mallya had urged the government to keep the railway line outside the boundaries of the farm. The government would have had to acquire fertile farmland for this to happen.
With the previous BJP government embroiled in land acquisition and de-notification controversies, Siddaramaiah wants to stay clear of development initiatives that use agricultural land. The idea of taking the railway line underground was also mooted, but even that was struck down.
The railway line between Bangalore and Hassan - a district headquarters, and home of former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda - was approved as a public-private-partnership (PPP) project between the Indian Railways and the Karnataka government way back in 2006.
The portion of the railway line between Hassan and Shravanabelagola, a Jain pilgrimage centre, is complete and the section is operational.
Work will now begin on the Bangalore-Kunigal-Shravanabelagola section of the railway line.
The entire project was originally expected to cost around Rs 413 crore, but another Rs 100 crore has been added by delays.
The lavish farm, spread over 500 acres, is located at Kunigal, a town in Tumkur district of Karnataka
Hassan is only 155km from Bangalore but does not have direct rail connectivity. Train commuters have to travel to Arsikere (180km from Bangalore) and board another train to Hassan.
In all, it's a five-and-half hour train journey from Bangalore to Hassan. Once the new railway line becomes operational, it will reduce travel time to two-and-a-half hours.
The demand for a railway line to Hassan via Shravanabelagola stems from two reasons.
Shravanabelagola, an international Jain pilgrimage centre 158km from Bangalore, witnesses the Mahasmasthaka Abhisheka - the anointment of India's tallest monolithic statue of Bahubali - once every 12 years. Jain pilgrims pour in from across the country, and indeed the world.
Hassan also happens to be a major international tourist destination, thanks to the district's Belur and Halebid temple complexes, which belong to the 12th century Hoysala Empire.
The government hopes providing direct rail connectivity to Hassan will boost tourism and the local economy.
"We have communicated our decision to the chief administrative officer (construction), South Western Railways, and work on the project is expected to start soon," Lad added.
