Oct 20 2016 (20:14)   Rail link to airport not viable from city centre

Providing a train service up to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) could be a better and cheaper alternative to the controversial steel flyover, but the state government seems to have taken little effort to seriously consider the prospect.
Many meetings took place between officials of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the Urban Development Department and the South Western Railway (SWR) over the past year on providing rail connectivity to the KIA, but none resulted in a concrete decision on the project.
Developing a rail link to the airport was one of
the initial plans of the government, the SWR and the Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), as it is a cheaper and faster mode of transport. The SWR took a unilateral decision in 2003-04 to develop the Devanahalli railway station and run special buses from the airport.
The places are just 5 kilometres apart. The railways offered to run train services between Channasandra (near Ramamurthy Nagar and KR Puram in eastern Bengaluru) and Devanahalli stations.
At present, the single track between the two stations is underutilised. Sanjiv Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru, told DH that the track could be doubled and later electrified. The project will cost no more than Rs 250 crore. The number of rakes can be determined depending on the number of passengers. Each rake costs Rs 30-35 crore, he said.
Agarwal, however, said that rail connectivity to the airport from the city centre was a challenge as the track between Bengaluru City and Yelahanka stations was over-occupied.
"It is the main track for long-distance trains. There is also shortage of space in the yard to house more trains. But that is not the case from Channasandra," he added.
Traffic expert M N Sreehari said that since railway stations were ready, a train service from Channasandra to Devanahalli could certainly help airport-bound travellers from eastern Bengaluru. To start with, he said, the single track can be used since train traffic is low.
But the chief minister seems to have ignored the cheaper modes of transport. Rail services from Hebbal and Yeshwantpur can also be introduced, Sreehari added.

It does work, But i feel there is a big scam in it. The contractors will use MGNREGA works for railway construction but Gov will pay the workers and also the contractor will take money for workers in the contract.
So basically the contractor will get free labour but he will get money from IR.

Article in yesterday's Deccan Herald (17-Feb) highlighting the inconvenience faced by passengers and low level occupancy after change in timings. The triweekly Garib Rath train from Yeshwantpur to Secunderabad has been advanced by almost six hours. The advancement has resulted in a very thin booking rate and the occupancy has slipped from an average of 70 per cent to 40 per cent.
While the passengers blame the South Western Railways (SWR) for the unfriendly timings, sources in the Railways attribute the reason behind the change to a former railway minister. The former minister wanted another triweekly, the Yeshwantpur-Bidar Express, to run seven days a week. As the Bidar train timings clashed with the Garib Rath train, the schedule was changed.
say that despite opposition from the SWR and South Central Railway officials, the Railway Board at its meeting decided to change the timings of the Garib Rath to accommodate the Bidar train on three more days a week.the new schedule is inconvenient. Professionals will have to take a half-day leave to catch the train at 1.30 pm. The arrival time is also odd as the train reaches its destination at 4 am.

Its just the Bus lobby which doesnt allow SWR to run trains to cities like HYD, chennai, pune, mumbai, vizag and others with suitable timings.. when we have slots for raj, ksk, duranto.. why cant find a slot for this. This is huge demand for AC trains in the above routes.
They have changed the timings of kaveri making it unsuitable for Bangalore.

I think Kaveri's TT was changed to ensure Malgudi runs on time and also to ensure atleast some sort of maintenance is done at MYS. Malgudi most of the days departed late when Kaveri had the old TT.

Malgudi can easily run on time if kaveri is delayed by 30 mins..Maludi is wasting lot of time at ypr and occupying platform for longer time. That time can be easily reduced
