But what is PNR ? Are you making prediction of availability of tickets ? In France PMR is the betting on horse-racing which is a different thing I think.

When you book a bus, you are given a reference no.
When you transact in a bank, you are given a transaction/reference no.
Similarly when you purchase a ticket in Indian Railways, you are given a PNR No. which stands for Passenger Name Record.

everytime you buy the ticket, you are given a confirmed ticket. (Depends on availability)
When you buy a Waitlisted or a RAC Ticket (assuming you know what these two stands for else read Steven Sir's article from Indiamike; link given at the last of admin's blogs), you are totally unsure whether the ticket would confirm, move to rac, or stay back in WL (Wait list).

This is where the PNR PRediction comes into picture where experts/experienced people predict about the future status of the PNR from their own experience/instinct/guess.
This provides a base for the traveller to hold back to the ticket or cancel it. The last and final call always rests upon the traveller. He is just given a prediction and it is upto his discrepancy whether to stick to the ticket, cancel it, or go for a fresh one.

I will dig around and find out more. Thanks for the info. When I travelled on Indian Railways in 1971 I had no idea of all this and I must have been very lucky to be able to travel from New Delhi to Mumbai without getting lost. As it happened I left the train at Sawai Madhophur Junction, because I was not accustomed to delights of train travel, and was invited to a tiger sanctuary by the keeper, Fateh Singh Rathore. As he has recently died he has an obituary in the Independent newspaper. A very kind gentleman who found me a small palace in the Ranthambore estate where I stayed for a while exploring the fortress and looking for tigers.

I will be taking the Netravati Express from Madgaon to Thrissur City on 30 December. I will be travelling with my wife and we would like an a/c sleeper. How soon should I book the tickets ? Is there anything else I should think about ?

The following UI enhancements have been made to the Atlas:
1. Fast loading: A compressed format of the atlas is now loaded on the main Atlas page to enable quick loading.
2. Route Search: Any station name/code may now be typed in to the drop down list, and all the routes passing through that station will be shown. Any of the displayed routes may be selected, and the same will be highlighted on the map.
3.
...
Station List: Once a route is highlighted, all the mapped stations lying on that route will appear on the right. Any of these stations may be clicked to view the exact location, as well as further details on that station.
4. True Distances: The Km distances of the displayed stations can also be seen (from the first station on that route). These distances are true distances - so for hilly terrains and the Konkan route, you may quickly check out the actual distances between stations. More enhancements showing rail distances between any 2 stations, etc. will also be provided shortly. For now, the indirect subtraction method may need to be used.
5. Route Colours have been slightly tweaked to clearly show single and double tracks apart.
6. The Atlas data will soon be merged into existing train routes, to provide richer search, route connections and so forth.
Corrections, changes, station additions and UI enhancements to the Atlas are expected to continue on a daily basis, indefinitely. For this reason, it is now called "The Living Atlas". As always, this disclaimer that the Atlas is not perfect, feedback is welcome, and any mistakes pointed out will be corrected as soon as possible.
Thanks.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

A minor update, but may impact many members: Hereafter, FMs will be able to delete invalid Red Flags on Imaginary trains. -@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

It has been over 2 weeks since the appointment of the current batch of FMs and 750 Complaints have been handled so far. It gives me immense pleasure in congratulating them for running the team diligently, professionally, competently and above all, without a shred of controversy or bias. The FM position...
