One of my fav trains. I have few memories to share about this train.
1. We would take this train from New Farakka to go to Calcutta. It would arrive by around 9 PM to reach Sealdah early by around 5-6 AM
2. It was few trains in India during 1990-92 to have Steam engine as a loco. I remember that it used to run on Steam engine till Bardhawaan

4. Never had any AC coach till 1992 (last when I traveled)
5. I used to get down with my family at Bardwaan to go to Raniganj. Generally Asansol Bardhwaan passenger was our preferred train.
6. It was single track over Farakka Bridge and only two platform at Farakka, with second platform being on the ground. Getting down at Farakka while coming from Bardhwaan used to be a problem as always.
This train was and will always be my favorite.

This is train is still the first choice for the people travelling from Malda & Farakka to Calcutta/ Sealdah. Some changes after that are listed below :
1) Now it's having 1A, 2A & 3A in addition to SL & Gen coaches.
2) Runs with diesel engine.
3) Mostly runs with RAC & WL because of the demand.

It was shifted to KOAA from SDAH after KOAA terminal got ready but due to the resistance from public and politicians it was again reinstated from SDAH only and running to the same terminal now.
5) For few months it was having a slip route to Katihar but was discontinued after KIR got one train of its own, the HATEY-BAZARE Express which now runs upto Saharsa.
6) For few months it was having a slip route to Radhikapur but was discontinued after RDP got one train of its own, the RDP-KOAA express.
7) Now it is running with a slip route to Balurghat.
8) Earlier this train used to depart from PF no 7 or 8 from SDAH. Now it departs from 9A/9B. Stands with Darjeeling mail on the other PF.
9) NTPC Farakka runs connecting bus services for this train to its townships.
This is one of my favourite train also. I travelled to Calcutta for the first time GOUR EXPRESS only. Didn't sleep in night waiting to see Calcutta. When train was about to reach BWN, i woke up my dad telling - we are about to reach Cacutta. My dad said " there is still 3 hrs to to go my son, please sleep otherwise you will able to enjoy the day.
I will never forget that journey. That was my first overnight journey.

Its like a moving home especially for the people of Farakka. I stayed there for nearly 6 yrs & this train was of prime importance especially for my father. We used to get down at Bandel very early in the morning around 4:30 am ( Previous TT ) & caught suburban trains (EMU) from there to reach our hometown Uttarpara . This was an overnight journey but still i used enjoy it very much. The train was superbly maintained & very rarely it got late. Sometimes it even reached before time because of its slacked TT. At Burdwan the train used to halt for a very long time . My grandfather once told me that it was for loco change but i didn't noticed any such thing. I used to be a frequent traveller of this train from 1992 onwards. It used to travel between HWH-Chopan. I used to board it from Renukut. I list few of my memories for all of you:
1. Their used to be only one 2AC coach. This train would never get late in its entire journey. No Pantry car was very inconvenient with reliance on local food vendors
2. We would travel 1.5 hrs from Shaktinagar to Renukut to board this train. At 11 AM this train would arrive at Renukut

Near Garwha Road lunch was served with rice, daal, sabzi by local vendors (horrible food). Dinner near Patratu, again by local vendors. I used to get down at Ranchi Rod to go to Hazaribagh by 7 PM.
4. Electrification work started near 1997-98 and I remember that it was near completed around 2001-02.
5. Train used to be in horrible condition due to lights not working at night (flourscent blubs) and toilets not having water.
6. Lot of dacoity used to happen with frequent cases of thefts.
7. Near 1996 this train was extended to Singrauli and after 1996 to Jabalpur
8. Then I started using it to go to Jabalpur for my engineering college. This train became a shuttle from Katni to JBP
9. I still remember drinking Saanchi Cold milk at Katni, it being overtaken by Rewa shuttle at katni and then Shaktipunj overtaking Rewa shuttle near Sehora road.
10. This train remained and is a lifeline for Singrauli/Shaktinagar. I am happy to see that finally it got 5 AC coaches. I think demand for a Pantry car never got through

Nice. When my father was posted in Vindhyanagar, I used to see this train so many times but sadly never travelled. Always we used to take Triveni Express so I share lot of those experiences with Triveni Experiences. Except that theft part & food experience.

Yes . Me too had a similar experience with this train. For 10 yrs , this was our only connectivity to Kolkata from Singrauli. We use to catch this train from RNQ at 11:00 am. I still remember it generally arrived late at RNQ or got delayed by 1- 2 hrs often but would arrive HWH at at it's dot time . Till 2009 when we left Singrauli , it used to have the same coach compo i.e. , 13 coaches ( 6 SL , 1 2AC , 4 Gens , 2 Slrs ). But after that demand increased . Now its an 18 coacher train with 5 AC coaches including a first class & 7 SLs though i still hope that SL should be increased. Pantry car was not added inspite of huge demand. Please tell me one thing!
When someone boards the train at Jaipur, did he/she get snacks immediately after boarding or after the train passes Jaipur Gandhinagar also?
I want to ask because snacks charges are not included when booking from Jaipur Gandhinagar, and snacks charges are added if booked from Jaipur Junction!

Let me answer your question, I travelled very recently in thi train. You get snacks immediately while train is standing at Jaipur. It was served to al the passengers. I did not see Pantry staff providing snacks to passengers boarding later. They were though served tea/coffee on request.

I again recently travelled in this train and observed that passengers boarding at Gandhinagar were served snacks. Train was though late by 10 minutes. The attendant started serving snack the moment train was at Jaipur, but it did not complete and by that time train reached Gandhinagar. Hence passengers boarding at Gandhinagar also were served snacks.

I post my train journey on 21st Jan from NDLS to Jaipur. I was allocated C13 coach and reached NDLS by 5:45 AM. The train was stationed at PF-2. While I boarded the train I observed lot of passengers getting birth allocated to the same seat. When clarified, they had C13-L coach as mentioned. I believe it was extra coach which was supposed to be attached. Train started slowly and arrived on time at Delhi cantt and Gurgaon. Newspaper and lemon water was served immediately after NDLS. At Gurgaon morning tea was served. After Gurgaon it was heavy fog and train moved slowly. All the seats were occupied. Near Alwar breakfast was served with bread cutlet. Also in option was south Indian and Non Veg breakfast. Tea was again served. The train continue to run slowly and managed to reach Jaipur at 11:30 AM.

journey on 22nd: Train arrived 15 mins before at Jaipur PF-1. I had WL 90 which got confirmed and was allocated C7 coach. Train started moving and immediately snacks was served with sandwich, kachauri, sonpapadi. after 1 hour soup was served with dinner near Alwar consisting of normal non veg and veg thali with ice cream. Train reached on time till Delhi cant but was made to wait for 15 mins near Sarai Rohilla due to train crossing. It finally reached NDLS PF-1 by 11:15 PM.
Some observations:
1. When boarding at NDLS avoid getting from Pharganj side as their is lot of traffic jam at the car entrance. You may end up missing your train
2. toilet locks are mostly broken in all the coaches which is quiet shameful
3. Expect a delay of 1 hr in winters/foggy season and plan accordingly. My work got delayed due to late arrival of the train at Jaipur
4. Do not worry if you have got a WL ticket at Jaipur. It is common that WL 90 get confirmed
5. please be wary of change in cancellation charges since Nov. No TDR and no refund 4 hrs before scheduled departure.
6. If waiting at Jaipur, you can very wll use 1A waiting rooms which is quiet convinient
7. Rewari to Alwar has been electrified. It is yet to be operational.

The coach condition seemed really bad. Broken toilet handles and locks is unimaginable. No one could use the toilets also as it could not be locked. I saw this situation in most of the coaches C13, C12 and C7. It looked liked a sabotage. Have complained about the same to Indian Railways.

Information About Mahamana Express is as Follows:-
Mahamana Express , The Brand New Indian Railways Train Introduced From Varanasi To New Delhi is a Luxurious experience for the common man. It has all the modern amenities for the common man in a face-lifted ICF Rake. The Rake has been transformed under the Make In India initiative which was started by the current ruling party , BJP , By Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off Mahamana Superfast Express, which connects Varanasi -- his parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh -- and Delhi.
Accompanied by senior ministers of his Cabinet, Modi flagged off the superfast express train, which would ply between Varanasi-Lucknow-New Delhi.
All the coaches of the model train have been manufactured in Bhopal coach Rehabilitation factory.
The train would be formally operational from January 25, thrice a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It would leave Varanasi for Delhi at 6.35 pm and would reach Delhi at 8.25 am, the next day.
Mahamana Express has been named after Banaras Hindu University (BHU)​ founder Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya.
The train will run between Varanasi and Delhi via Lucknow thrice a week.
It is fully equipped with the modern facilities with dustbins and bio toilets in every coach.
The train has new renovated and refurbished AC-coaches fitted with LED screen.
The train will cover the 800 km distance in less than 14 hours.
Equipped with added features like controlled discharged water tap, new toilet modules, exhaust fan, LED lights, snack tables for side berth passengers.
Since the facilities and other amenities are substantially improved in the AC and Sleeper coaches at an increased cost, there was a need to increase the fare by 15 per cent for the new service, a senior Railway Ministry official said.
Railways plans to introduce two more such trains soon.
The train will depart from New Delhi station at 6.35 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from January 25 and will reach Varanasi at 8.25 a.m. the next day.
The train will depart from Varanasi at 6.35 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from January 26 to reach New Delhi at 8.25 a.m. the next day. Equipped with features like controlled discharged water tap, new toilet modules, exhaust fans, LED lights, snack tables for side berth passengers and use of fire retardation materials, 18 coaches comprising AC-1, AC-2, Sleeper Class and General Class bogies were recently showcased by railways here. Consisting of one First AC, one AC II Tier, Nine sleeper class, four General Class & two second class-cum-luggage van coaches, the 22418/22417 Superfast Express will stop at Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow, Sultanpur and Jaunpur City stations en-route in both directions.
As for added facilities, the coaches are being provided with ergonomically designed ladders for climbing up to upper berths in all sleeper coaches, aesthetically designed toilet modules have been provided with enhanced passenger amenities like a bigger mirror, platform washbasin, controlled discharged water tap, odour control system, passenger address system and GPS-based passenger information system.

I observe that it will travel all the way with electric loco from Varanasi - Sultanpur-Lucknow-Barelliey-Moradabad-Gaziabad. which means this line is fully electrified now and trains like Shramjeevi will soon also have WAP 4/WAP 7 all the way till Patna. Besides that I loved this train and timings. I was planning to go to Varanasi soon and I will book my tickets in this train only (earlier I was thinking of ShivGanga).

I have a question to the experts here. I have booked ticket from Jaipur to New Delhi on 21st Jan in CC. I got a WL-56 and WL-57. While I check that 476 seats are available from Ajmer and showing another 476 seats available from Kishangarh. My question, is, will at the time of chart prepration my Waitlist tickets will be adjusted/confirmed against the available seats from Ajmer and Kishangarh?
