NEW DELHI: Amid protests over a sharp hike in fares and criticism of political parties, the government on Saturday strongly defended the increase in passenger fares, including for short-distance travel, arguing the revision was long overdue as the last hike took place around 11 years ago and a heavy subsidy burden was "unsustainable" in the wake of soaring costs.
While passengers travelling by sub-urban and short-haul trains account for 52% of the traffic, their share in total passenger revenues was around 6-7%. This segment accounted for around 60% of the annual subsidy of Rs 26,000 crore, top-ranking officials told TOI, while justifying Friday's fare hike announcement.

"There is some discomfort among passengers, but an element of rationality has to be brought in as tickets are very low priced. Even after the increase, those travelling on season tickets will pay half the normal fare," Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar told TOI. For years, freight traffic has subsidized passenger operations, resulting in companies shifting consignments to road.
Political parties ranging from Congress, Left, Samajwadi Party, BSP to BJP's own allies like Shiv Sena have criticized the increase in passenger fares with cities having well developed suburban networks bearing the brunt. But a day after the hikes were announced, the government did not seem ready to yield ground.

"The Indian Railways for the last few years have been running at a loss. The only way that railways can survive is when users pay for the facilities that they avail. The passenger services have been subsidized by the freight traffic... A loss making railway will provide below-par services. It will eventually not even have the resources to pay its bill. India must decide whether it wants a world class railway or a ramshackled one. The railway minister has taken a difficult but a correct decision," the minister said in a Facebook post.
The decision to raise passenger fares and freight charges is seen as part of the "bitter medicine" Prime Minister Narendra Modi said was necessary to set right faltering finances that he said were aggravated by UPA's mismanagement of the economy — a charge denied by former finance minister P Chidambaram.
Jaitley's statement came as political parties, including allies such as Shiv Sena, went public with their protest.
But the railways felt it has strong reasons to argue its case. Chairman Arunendra Kumar contended that the fare still included at least 50% subsidy for season tickets, and the actual increase is not significant, although it may look steep in percentage terms.
"It is not a very significant increase, although some people are complaining," DP Pande, member (traffic) in the railway board told TOI, adding that the rise will only partially offset the state-run transporter's loss.
Railways is expected to mop up around Rs 9,200 crore from the Friday's decision to increase passenger fares by 14.2% in all classes while freight charge was hiked by 6.5% with effect from June 25.

---> The Worst, Worst part were the PASSHOLDERS. They Boarded from Valsad and Vapi and Continued their Journey till Andheri.
They Boarded the train, Did Hi-Hello to the TTE and Pantry Staff, took Some Breakfast from Pantry and Came and Sat on our Upper Berths and Lower Berths.
When we Objected, they Started abusing us and teasing us. We Complained to TTE, and were shocked to hear the reply From him - We are Helpless, they are in Groups.
Later when the train was Between Palghar-Virar, One of the Passholders got in Fight With my Elder Brother on Some Private issues. The Quarreling Started and all the Passholders Came to give Backup to their Friend. I Immediately Called on of my Friend in Mumbai in Borivali, who was a Bouncer. At Borivali, the Scenario Started. GRP/RPF Gyus Came. When we narrated them the Entire Incident, the reaction which they gave was quite Irritating. They JustDrove away those Goons without Arresting them.
Since We had to Catch Another train For Solapur, we Decided not to Lodge a Complaint because of Delay. When We reached Solapur, We Went to GRPOffice to Lodge a Complaint. But still Rail Authorities are not Ready to Lodge Our Complaint.

Exactly, People are Frustrated with WR as well as CR inspite of HQ of both the Zones Situated in the City. Everyday some or other Incident happens and both the Divisions face a hard time to tackle the Problems.
Until IR gives Mumbai, their Own Independent Zonal Railways, Shifting of HQ of WR to ADI sounds Impractical.

Even if this train would have Been Extended to Jaipur or Bikaner would have made some Sense, but whats the Sense of Extending to Barmer on Impractical and Odd Timings? Believe me, there is not too much of requirement of AC train, even if 16501/02 ADI YPR Weekly Non AC train would have been extended was still better to Barmer.
Railways Should Conduct a Survey First before taking any Decision on such Extensions on political request also.

Things are not looking good for the Pune railway division this year. In a recent survey undertaken by the division, the findings revealed a drop in passenger footfall, as compared to last year’s results.

railway division offers two types of train services — suburban or local and long distance. The study shows local train passengers travelling within the 12 stations that fall under the division’s jurisdiction, have dwindled in the past year with a decrease of 0.5 per cent. As for the long distance trains services, the percentage of passengers has dropped by one.
These deteriorating statistics have surely raised an alarm for the railway board that is now planning to attract more passengers to keep their record intact.
Officalspeak Speaking about the reasons behind this downfall, Pune divisional railway manager (DRM), Suneet Sharma said, “There can’t be just one reason behind this decline. Workers, who come to the city for jobs, have decreased in the past year, which has ultimately created a gap in the unreserved section on long distance trains. Overall there has been a slowdown in the industrial sector. Hence the transportation of workers and officials have also reduced from one part to another part of the country.”
Commenting on local passengers under the Pune railway division Sharma said, “We are trying to offer better services and facilities to our passengers who travel daily by local trains within Pune division.
Even though the railway fares have increased by 2.3 per cent in the last year, the public still prefers to travel via railways, as it is safe and relatively cheaper than other modes of transport.”
At present, there are six local trains from Pune railway station to Lonavala, and 140 long distance trains operating daily. More than two lakh passengers board trains from Pune railway division’s major stations — Pune, Chinchwad, Daund and Kolhapur.
Harsha Shah, president of Railway Pravasi Group said, “The frequency of local trains is not so efficient as seen on the Mumbai route, but people living in other areas like Shirwal, Bhosari, Saswad have no option but to opt for other modes of transport. A ring railway system can be the best option for people living around or on the outskirts of Pune city.”
He added, “There is a need for trains to connect to other major cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Jaipur.

Most of them are cleared, and if shed policy sticks to 100, then the CO will b given 100 on their sheets.
a WAG-7/5 can haul 24 coach train at 110 km/h too. but WAG-7 is restricted to 100 km/h with M/E.
Most of WAG-5's are being refit for M/E purpose too with SI units, Processor n vertical DBR's.

derailment happened at 2:30 pm. Train leaves at 5.00 pm. CR had to get an alternate loco in quick time and I am sure its not easy. and KYN has only WAGs. So a WAG was used till BSL. If mum raj can be hauled by a WAG when its engine failed, whats wrong with this

Actually 12649/50 Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express via KCG was a Daily Running train Before.
But on that Route route, it did not Served much of Karnataka State.
There was very Much Demand for another good connection to Delhi from People of Belgaum and Hubli as Goa Express used to Run very Overcrowded.

Pune were also Pressurising Railways to Give a Superfast Connection to Delhi.
And if the train is Routed via Kalyan, it has to Undergo Several Loco Changes, One at Pune from Diesel to Electric, and one at Vadodara from WCAM to WAP.
And Mumbai-Vadodara Route is already oversaturated with premium trains and Daund-Manmad Route is not so saturated line. So I guess Railway did not Run it via BSR.

12649 shud ve been named bangalore sampark kranti instead of karnataka sampark kranti. See, its only stop in karnataka is yesvantpur, three stops in andhra pradesh, kcg, dmm, krnt.Wat use is it to karnataka? I feel the sur dd mmr route is more saturated than kyn brc kota route. Moreover what's the point if a train called karnataka sampark kranti doesn't cover a single station in karnataka other than it's originating station? It's like trains terminating at sbc being extended to mys for lack of space. Same way this train is like a kcg nzm train extended to bangalore for space constraints.

Now look at the current route. 12629 has two rake reversals at pune and dd. Then loco change at manmad. Wont 2 loco change be faster than two rake reversals plus one loco change? High time we place our demands. Excuses can be given. But kyn to nzm is a double electrified high speed line. Tt shud be made accordingly.
