Since the 1960s , I have been passing through Tirur.Even during those days with just two mail trains and some four passenger trains passing through, Tirur had a considerabla volume of goods traffic. the station had one long platform and some seven railway tracks ,four of which were for loading and stabling of wagons. Now with an express train arriving every twenty minutes, and a single siding track for goods, I really wonder how the rly is managing its operations, shunting and so on. There is absolutely no further space for providing additional tracks, unless one plans to lay a siding on the SRR side, beyond the platform end. Very cumbersome. Perumkolam V. hariharan

While tracking 12978 exp. through railway status report at various wayside stations , I found one thing quite interesting and unusual when the train was passing through Kerala, in the early hours of June 22nd. The train departed from CLT at 1=08 hrs and reached Shoranur at 2=15 am ,including a 2 minute halt at Tirur, 1=41/1=43 am. It had covered a distance of 84 kms. in 1hr. 7mts.

The unfortunate story is that there is a misuse of this forum by persons with half-baked information , jeopardising the reliability of this site. for example , a few months back someone sent a mail that the halt for 12978 exp. at Tirur has been eliminated. With great alacrity, this forum eliminated the Tirur stop at least from the train schedule. I also believed this and advised someone proceeding to Kottakal to terminate his train journey at Calicut. and not proceed up to...

sir, thank you for your reply. But, I would also request you to enlighten me on something that I am unable to comprehend. Ever since I came across this issue of whether 12978 really halts at Tirur or not, I made it a point to check every Sunday on the SR website , the legend on the running of 12978 to check whether it stopped at Tirur or not.(the train , a weekly train leaves Ajmer on Fridays and arrives ERL on Sundays) But believe me on every run the train did stop and on May 5, the train stopped for 5 minutes with a comment indicating the number of minutes delay. Official, or unofficial, the train does stop at Tirur every time it passes through. Even today, 25/05/2013 , it has arrived at oo-17 hrs and departed at 00-25 its sheduled departure time at least as per printed time table of SR which is in vogue. If it was an unofficial halt, the train does not have to wait till its sheduled departure time.!! p.v. hariharan

while tracking the movement of 12978 which left Ajmer on 6/8/12, the table indicated a sheduled halt at Tirur on 8/7/12 at 1-18/1- 35 am.
The running status of 12978 of 6/7/12 from Ajmer indicated that the train had halted at Tirur at 1 -35 and departed at 1 - 37 a.m. Can anyone in the know things actually clarify on this. I had visited www.ss.indianrailways.gov.in . Permkolam Hariharan, email@example.com
Further to my letter of 10th July, on the controversial subject of 12978 halt at Tirur,today also I tracked the movement of 12978 Exp. from Ajmer to Ernakulam, since today is its sheduled day of departure, viz. Friday, 13/07/2012 following the monsoon shedule. The shedule indicates that 12978 will arrive Tirur on 15/07/2012 at 1 -28 a. m and depart at 1 -30 a.m .The latest copy of "Trains at a Glance" July 2012 to July 2013 also confirms this timing at Tirur.

Further to my notes , I have clarified in my Blog letter no.483884 that the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 clearly has indicated the departure timings of 12978 train at Tirur as 1 -20 hrs during Monsoon time and 00- 25 hrs on non-monsoon periods. The Time

At last I managed to get the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 onwards. In the Table 5A and 5A (M) Monsoon, it is clearly indicated that 12978
Ajmer -Ernakulam Marusagar departs from Tirur at 00-25 hrs and 1-20 hrs during Monsoon period. That should settle this controversy once and for all till the next revision as the travelling public is put to a lot of uncertainty and inconvenience.

The controversy & confusion whether 12978
ERl bound Marusagar exp stops at Tirur or not continues.Last timetable JULY,11 settled the issue by providing a halt at Tirur. But in March, '12, there was an unofficial news that the halt has been withdrawn. But with the introduction of the new timetable in July, 2012, the halt appears to have been restored. Unfortunately copies of time table are still not available in Chennai.
The Southern Railway must really take stock of its time table planning if it would really like to avoid rubbing the public on the wrong side.
After the Villupuram Katpadi gauge conversion, SR has planned to run a bi-weekly express between Tirupati and Madurai passing through the major pilgrim belt of Thiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai Jn., Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Sirkazhi, Trichy,
before reaching Madurai. This train is ostensibly a pilgrim express.
the tamil nadu state govt should make a representation to the rail ministry for making the train a daily. there should be sufficient demand for berths.previously MEENAKSHI express was running daily between MDU-TPTY-MDU. So even if the train is made a daily it cannot be treated as a bonus or gift to the passengers of coastal districts of tamil nadu. it is only restoration of an old service which was stopped on account of gauge conversion.
In the past, I have on different occasions indicated how the our railway tracks are over-utilised, and railway technical teams do hair splitting exercises to squeeze in Shatabdis or durontos (durantham) in the already water-tight shedules.

I am in support of your views.
Railway tracks are over used by launching new trains only due to political concern every year.
We should take care of safety feature first not on running more & more trains.
Railway Should try to give Quality service not Quantity based service.
There is no such quality check in the railways as of now or its only a namesake.
