Reference to PKV's mail No. 27 West Coast Express was introduced on 1st April, 1965, by combining one Jalarpet Exp at that time with JLP SRR Link EXP. and extending to MAQ. It used to leave at 15 35 hrs. and arrive MAQ at 12 15 hrs next day. Initially it skipped CBT but was rerouted via CBT and from April, 1966 it was rescheduled to leave MAS at 9 40 hrs and reach M

Since the 1960s , I have been passing through Tirur.Even during those days with just two mail trains and some four passenger trains passing through, Tirur had a considerabla volume of goods traffic. the station had one long platform and some seven railway tracks ,four of which were for loading and stabling of wagons. Now with an express train arriving every twenty minutes, and a single siding track for goods, I really wonder how the rly is managing its operations, shunting and so on. There is absolutely no further space for providing additional tracks, unless one plans to lay a siding on the SRR side, beyond the platform end. Very cumbersome. Perumkolam V. hariharan

While tracking 12978 exp. through railway status report at various wayside stations , I found one thing quite interesting and unusual when the train was passing through Kerala, in the early hours of June 22nd. The train departed from CLT at 1=08 hrs and reached Shoranur at 2=15 am ,including a 2 minute halt at Tirur, 1=41/1=43 am. It had covered a distance of 84 kms. in 1hr. 7mts.
which is very rare in this part of the country. In fact , the official Rly. Timetable
gives a minimum of 1=
23 mts for Rajdhani which runs non-stop and 1=20 mts. for 22630 in the reverse direction. In fact on this run, the train left MAQ at22=05 hrs and arrived SRR at 2=15 hrs, exactly 4hrs. & 10 mts. for a distance of 307 kms. with intermediate halts at Kasaragod, Cann., Calicut, & Tirur . The train finally arrived Ernakulam Jn. at 4=57 hrs.
Why I found it interesting is that slowly the speeds are being increased officially and unofficially which was never the case 20 years back. thanks to KRC and consequent track doubling. Even today SRR - ERL section cannot boast of commercial speeds of 75 kms. plus.
I feel there is now hope for substantial speed in rail travel in Kerala, but the rly must take a holistic view of all sections, otherwise there would still be bottlenecks. Perumkolam Hariharan.

From P. V. Hariharan : My point is not whether Marusagar Express should have a halt at a particular station or not. That will be decided based on revenue generation and strategic needs.
The unfortunate story is that there is a misuse of this forum by persons with half-baked information , jeopardising the reliability of this site. for example , a few months back someone sent a mail that the halt for 12978 exp. at Tirur has been eliminated. With great alacrity, this forum eliminated the Tirur stop at least from the train schedule. I also believed this and advised someone proceeding to Kottakal to terminate his train journey at Calicut. and not proceed up to
Tirur. But now I have found out that the halt was never removed. The legend for 12978 train for April 12, 2013 shows that the train has completed the journey with arrival and departure at Tirur as 12=23 a.m. and 12=25 a.m. respectively. as per the railway schedule.
My request to the Managers of this blog/forum is not to make any changes without verifying the actual fact. after all there is a printed time table and as far as possible, they would not like to mutilate it too often.
The legend is from Southern Railways website and nobody can argue about it.

sir, thank you for your reply. But, I would also request you to enlighten me on something that I am unable to comprehend. Ever since I came across this issue of whether 12978 really halts at Tirur or not, I made it a point to check every Sunday on the SR website , the legend on the running of 12978 to check whether it stopped at Tirur or not.(the train , a weekly train leaves Ajmer on Fridays and arrives ERL on Sundays) But believe me on every run the train did stop and on May 5, the train stopped for 5 minutes with a comment indicating the number of minutes delay. My question is if the train does not have a commercial halt , why does it stop everytime?.. any technical halt? You can verify this on the SR website .by clicking train shedule. If for any reason, the...
train has to stop on every occasion without fail, then why not the railways make it a regular commercial halt. In any case the Trains At A Glance and SR Time Table published in July 2012 which are still being sold at the stations indicate an official halt confounding the confusion. Could you please check on this. It would help a lot of uninitiated who may not be comfortable with technology.

Official, or unofficial, the train does stop at Tirur every time it passes through. Even today, 25/05/2013 , it has arrived at oo-17 hrs and departed at 00-25 its sheduled departure time at least as per printed time table of SR which is in vogue. If it was an unofficial halt, the train does not have to wait till its sheduled departure time.!! p.v. hariharan

while tracking the movement of 12978 which left Ajmer on 6/8/12, the table indicated a sheduled halt at Tirur on 8/7/12 at 1-18/1- 35 am.
The running status of 12978 of 6/7/12 from Ajmer indicated that the train had halted at Tirur at 1 -35 and departed at 1 - 37 a.m. Can anyone in the know things actually clarify on this. I had visited www.ss.indianrailways.gov.in . Permkolam Hariharan, pvh_46@yahoo.co.in

Further to my letter of 10th July, on the controversial subject of 12978 halt at Tirur, today also I tracked the movement of 12978 Exp. from Ajmer to Ernakulam, since today is its sheduled day of departure, viz. Friday, 13/07/2012 following the monsoon shedule. The shedule indicates that 12978 will arrive Tirur on 15/07/2012 at 1 -28 a. m and depart at 1 -30 a.m .The latest copy of "Trains at a Glance" July 2012 to July 2013 also confirms this timing at Tirur.
When several sources of Public Importance
corroborates the information ,I do not think Palghat Div. or any other agency with a vested interest take a unilateral action to withdraw the halt at Tirur. I, genuinely feel that some not well-informed person might have misled this Forum causing unnecessary, avoidable inconvenience to the viewers of this Blog. I, would therefore request the Administrator to verify the information I have provided, which is available for everyone to see, and issue necessary clarification to put the record straight. Thanks.

Further to my notes , I have clarified in my Blog letter no.483884 that the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 clearly has indicated the departure timings of 12978 train at Tirur as 1 -20 hrs during Monsoon time and 00- 25 hrs on non-monsoon periods. The Time
shedule shown in our website is also outdated and needs to be corrected not only for the halts but also the timings at various stations. Perumkolam V Hariharan

At last I managed to get the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 onwards. In the Table 5A and 5A (M) Monsoon, it is clearly indicated that 12978
Ajmer -Ernakulam Marusagar departs from Tirur at 00-25 hrs and 1-20 hrs during Monsoon period. That should settle this controversy once and for all till the next revision as the travelling public is put to a lot of uncertainty and inconvenience.
I would request the administrator to change the time shedule consistent with the latest time table. The
present shedule erroneously shows that 12978 passes through Tirur at 1 -41 am without a halt.!!

The controversy & confusion whether 12978
ERl bound Marusagar exp stops at Tirur or not continues.Last timetable JULY,11 settled the issue by providing a halt at Tirur. But in March, '12, there was an unofficial news that the halt has been withdrawn. But with the introduction of the new timetable in July, 2012, the halt appears to have been restored. Unfortunately copies of time table are still not available in Chennai.
Recently, I was tracking the movement of 12978 which left Amer on 6/7/12 at 7 -40. via train shedule through www.sr.indianrailways.gov.in. It indicated both the sheduled arrival as well as the actual arrival and departure time at TIRUR, viz. i -18/1 -20, and 1 -35/1 -37 ,respectively on 8/7/2012.
This means that there is an official commercial halt at tirur for 12978. It will be good if the administrator clarifies on the matter. In the good old days Time Tables used to be sacrosanct and no official or politician could meddle with it as a matter of right. Perumkolam V. Hariharan

The Southern Railway must really take stock of its time table planning if it would really like to avoid rubbing the public on the wrong side.
After the Villupuram Katpadi gauge conversion, SR has planned to run a bi-weekly express between Tirupati and Madurai passing through the major pilgrim belt of Thiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai Jn., Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Sirkazhi, Trichy,
before reaching Madurai. This train is ostensibly a pilgrim express.
The first disappointment was that it is not a daily train unlike the meter gauge express prior to gauge conversion several years ago.
The real rude shock was the train did not have halts at major centres of Thiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai Jn., Kumbakonam and Sirkazhi which are being visited by tourists from all over the world not only for the spiritual gains but also for study of ancient temple architecture, philosophy and many related subjects.
When representations were made to the railway, they apparently ignored the same as a routine affair. Finally, a public interest litigation was filed in the court.
Now the railway has issued a circular, that the Railway Board had approved stops at Thiruvannamalai, myladuthurai, Kumbakonam, Sirkazhi and Kodaikanal on a temporary basis!!.
Anyway it is obviously a face saving device and these stops would certainly be a permanent feature.
The news has been flashed all over NDTV. While railway might have ultimately seen sense, the growing perception is there is a large disconnect with the travelling public, the ultimate customers. In fact the IRS officers must be strictly instructed to study the areas under consideration, make a few visits to various important railway centres and interact with the institutions who matter. Most of these railway officials are from outside the state, and do not really take any effort to understand the areas they are catering to. When every thing fails, people resort to political means, and an MP or a Minister intervenes and things get sorted out.
The negative side of the issue, is that politicians get a leverage to interfere in the railway administration due to the ineptness of the railways to manage its problems.

the tamil nadu state govt should make a representation to the rail ministry for making the train a daily. there should be sufficient demand for berths.previously MEENAKSHI express was running daily between MDU-TPTY-MDU. So even if the train is made a daily it cannot be treated as a bonus or gift to the passengers of coastal districts of tamil nadu. it is only restoration of an old service which was stopped on account of gauge conversion.

In the past, I have on different occasions indicated how the our railway tracks are over-utilised, and railway technical teams do hair splitting exercises to squeeze in Shatabdis or durontos (durantham) in the already water-tight shedules.
The results are there for us to see-- The Kalka Mail tragedy.
I feel a time has come when the power of the rly. minister should be withdrawn from announcing populist trains at the spur of the moment. The Railway Technical committee must have the veto power in the decision to
introduce a train if after exploring all the avenues they feel there is no scope wihout compromising on passenger safety. Unfortunately, our professionals are not allowed to work without fear or favour.
What has happened to all the safety funds that have been collected from passengers over the last several years? How much time do the railway staff really get on track maintenance given the heavy over-utilisation of capacities?
The need of the hour is safe ,reliable and reasonably quick trains within the ambit of safe transportation, basic amenities like drinking water at stations , shelters, clean toilets etc. One should really see the condition of some medium category mofussil stations. There are still some branch lines where the passengers have to climb on to the bogies since the train has not touched the small platform.
Our bullet trains and durontos can wait. Let railways reintroduce Janatha EXpresses

I am in support of your views.
Railway tracks are over used by launching new trains only due to political concern every year.
We should take care of safety feature first not on running more & more trains.
Railway Should try to give Quality service not Quantity based service.
