Reference to PKV's mail No. 27 West Coast Express was introduced on 1st April, 1965, by combining one Jalarpet Exp at that time with JLP SRR Link EXP. and extending to MAQ. It used to leave at 15 35 hrs. and arrive MAQ at 12 15 hrs next day. Initially it skipped CBT but was rerouted via CBT and from April, 1966 it was rescheduled to leave MAS at 9 40 hrs and reach M

Since the 1960s , I have been passing through Tirur.Even during those days with just two mail trains and some four passenger trains passing through, Tirur had a considerabla volume of goods traffic. the station had one long platform and some seven railway tracks ,four of which were for loading and stabling of wagons. Now with an express train arriving every twenty minutes, and a single siding track for goods, I really wonder how the rly is managing its operations, shunting and so on. There is absolutely no further space for providing additional tracks, unless one plans to lay a siding on the SRR side, beyond the platform end. Very cumbersome. Perumkolam V. hariharan

It has been officially confirmed by Rlys that 12978 has a halt at Tirur as also indicated in the latest Time Table. The reply was for a query raised by me pvh_46

Re# 792240-1
While tracking 12978 exp. through railway status report at various wayside stations , I found one thing quite interesting and unusual when the train was passing through Kerala, in the early hours of June 22nd. The train departed from CLT at 1=08 hrs and reached Shoranur at 2=15 am ,including a 2 minute halt at Tirur, 1=41/1=43 am. It had covered a distance of 84 kms. in 1hr. 7mts.
which is very rare in this part of the country. In fact , the official Rly. Timetable
gives a minimum of 1=

23 mts for Rajdhani which runs non-stop and 1=20 mts. for 22630 in the reverse direction. In fact on this run, the train left MAQ at22=05 hrs and arrived SRR at 2=15 hrs, exactly 4hrs. & 10 mts. for a distance of 307 kms. with intermediate halts at Kasaragod, Cann., Calicut, & Tirur . The train finally arrived Ernakulam Jn. at 4=57 hrs.
Why I found it interesting is that slowly the speeds are being increased officially and unofficially which was never the case 20 years back. thanks to KRC and consequent track doubling. Even today SRR - ERL section cannot boast of commercial speeds of 75 kms. plus.
I feel there is now hope for substantial speed in rail travel in Kerala, but the rly must take a holistic view of all sections, otherwise there would still be bottlenecks. Perumkolam Hariharan.

From P. V. Hariharan : My point is not whether Marusagar Express should have a halt at a particular station or not. That will be decided based on revenue generation and strategic needs.
The unfortunate story is that there is a misuse of this forum by persons with half-baked information , jeopardising the reliability of this site. for example , a few months back someone sent a mail that the halt for 12978 exp. at Tirur has been eliminated. With great alacrity, this forum eliminated the Tirur stop at least from the train schedule. I also believed this and advised someone proceeding to Kottakal to terminate his train journey at Calicut. and not proceed up to

Tirur. But now I have found out that the halt was never removed. The legend for 12978 train for April 12, 2013 shows that the train has completed the journey with arrival and departure at Tirur as 12=23 a.m. and 12=25 a.m. respectively. as per the railway schedule.
My request to the Managers of this blog/forum is not to make any changes without verifying the actual fact. after all there is a printed time table and as far as possible, they would not like to mutilate it too often.
The legend is from Southern Railways website and nobody can argue about it.

sir, thank you for your reply. But, I would also request you to enlighten me on something that I am unable to comprehend. Ever since I came across this issue of whether 12978 really halts at Tirur or not, I made it a point to check every Sunday on the SR website , the legend on the running of 12978 to check whether it stopped at Tirur or not.(the train , a weekly train leaves Ajmer on Fridays and arrives ERL on Sundays) But believe me on every run the train did stop and on May 5, the train stopped for 5 minutes with a comment indicating the number of minutes delay. My question is if the train does not have a commercial halt , why does it stop everytime?.. any technical halt? You can verify this on the SR website .by clicking train shedule. If for any reason, the...

train has to stop on every occasion without fail, then why not the railways make it a regular commercial halt. In any case the Trains At A Glance and SR Time Table published in July 2012 which are still being sold at the stations indicate an official halt confounding the confusion. Could you please check on this. It would help a lot of uninitiated who may not be comfortable with technology.
P.V. Hariharan

Official, or unofficial, the train does stop at Tirur every time it passes through. Even today, 25/05/2013 , it has arrived at oo-17 hrs and departed at 00-25 its sheduled departure time at least as per printed time table of SR which is in vogue. If it was an unofficial halt, the train does not have to wait till its sheduled departure time.!! p.v. hariharan
