Sirs, I am a humble overseas member and wish to ask this learned college of Rail knowledge for some advices.
I wish to base myself in Kalyan Junction in October 2011 for some rail adventures to the south and east in conjunction with a personal Yatra and I am wanting to receive recommendations for accommodations in near proximity to said temple of the Railway Arts.
I am not a 5 star person, well.. not even a 1 star person really!

suggestions gratefully received. For example, what is the current state of railway retiring rooms.

If you are interested in Yatra of South and East, You will be moving, and staying for only few days in Kalyan. Or are you likely to stay for longer in Kalyan?
Why you wish to stay in Kalyan? if you are going for tour ofSouth and East?

may visit the site: indiamike.com that gives experiences of travellers in India. I am not familiar with Kalyan area and Kalyan is not heart of Mumbai. If you can afford to stay in suburbs of Mumbai like Andheri, Churchgate, Mumbai Central , you can enjoy city life too and be near train staitions from where you board the trains for your onward journey.

I wish to visit all the Vipassana meditation centres in Maharashtra, though not necessarily for taking a course at each one.
Having plotted all the centres in Maharashtra (and Andhra Pradesh / Madhya Pradesh just in case) I see 2 distinct 'lines', that is, lines connecting centres, not actual railway lines.
1) Pune - Hatkanagale
2) Titwala - Durg

represents a useful intersection hence my idea of basing myself at said place. I am not new to India, this will be my 9th visit I think, and I would normally stay in Fort area of Mumbai but felt that Kalyan would make an interesting change if suitable accommodations can be found.
General itinerary would be going out and stopping off for half day, one day or two days in each location and availing of longer gaps for overnighting on train. Having reached my end point, I can take the most interesting return train. Certainly I would like to try the Nagpur Duronto as I have never been on such a train.
So, my enquiry is quite specific to Kalyan and modest accommodations therein.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

A minor update, but may impact many members: Hereafter, FMs will be able to delete invalid Red Flags on Imaginary trains. Red Flags can be removed by FMs, only against specific complaints filed against the blog. This does not give all members the right to complain against EVERY single red flag they...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...

It has been over 2 weeks since the appointment of the current batch of FMs and 750 Complaints have been handled so far. It gives me immense pleasure in congratulating them for running the team diligently, professionally, competently and above all, without a shred of controversy or bias. The FM position...
