I am newbie to this site. Can anyone please guide me about meaning of various notations used on this site such as +/_ figures under the xfer delay, what is the meaning of +/- figures under shift in chains and what is the meaning of average? It will be very useful if this kind of info is made available for new joiners. I am planning my first long distance family trip and thanks to this site I was able to look for connecting trains. But I am confused as to which trains/chains should i select as I don't know the meaning of these notations. Thank you guys, whoever has made this web site.

what about the figures under shift?? some chains have too manyu negatives under shift and some have positive. which chain is safe to chose?
