First direct London-China train completes 12,000 km run
AFP | Updated: Apr 29, 2017, 02.38 PM IST
The journey is the latest effort in China's drive to strengthen trade links with western
Europe along a modern-day "Silk Road" route.
The train -- loaded with whisky, baby milk, pharmaceuticals and machinery -- departed London on April 10.
London is the 15th city to be linked to a new freight network offered by the state-run China Railway Corporation.

BEIJING: The first freight train to link China directly to the UK arrived in the eastern Chinese city of Yiwu Saturday after covering over 12,000-kilometres (7,500 miles), making it the second-longest route in the world.
The journey is the latest effort in China's drive to strengthen trade links with western Europe along a modern-day "Silk Road" route.
The world's top trading nation launched the "One Belt, One Road" strategy in 2013, and has since poured millions into constructing vast infrastructure links.
The train -- loaded with whisky, baby milk, pharmaceuticals and machinery -- departed London on April 10 and passed through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan during its 20-day trip before arriving in Yiwu in eastern Zhejiang province, a major wholesale centre for small consumer goods.
The new route is longer than Russia's famous Trans-Siberian railway, but about 1000 kilometres shorter than the record-holding China-Madrid link, which opened in 2014.
London is the 15th city to be linked to a new freight network offered by the state-run China Railway Corporation, which says its services are cheaper than air transport and quicker than shipping.
A sign showing the distancein to various destinations as a freight train transporting containers laden with goods from China, arrives at DB Cargo's London Eurohub rail freight depot in Barking .
The journey should be 30 days faster than moving the goods by ship, the provincial government had said, but the pilot run took two days more than the 18 days expected.
And the train, named the East Wind, has much less carrying capacity -- just 88 shipping containers, according to the Yiwu government, compared to the 10,000 to 20,000 containers cargo ships can carry.
It is unclear how much the venture cost, and some experts have questioned whether the ambitious project makes economic sense.
"It is hard to say at this stage what the economic return will be, as the economic benefits will come over a long time," He Tianjie of Oxford Economics Hong Kong told AFP.
"However, the train is in some aspects more convenient and flexible. It can make multiple stops, allowing for the pick up and offloading of cargo along the way. Rail transport is also less affected by adverse weather conditions. Therefore, there may be a role for such long-haul rail links," he said.
China already has a regular direct freight train service to Germany, Europe's largest economy.
One route links the Chinese megacity of Chongqing to Duisburg, a steel-making town and one of Germany's most-important transportation and commercial hubs.
The other route links Beijing, the Chinese capital, to Hamburg, Germany's second-largest city.
Roughly 80 percent of global trade is shipped by sea as freight train services face technical and bureaucratic hurdles which vary according to country.
The East Wind's locomotive and carriages had to be changed en route because of the larger gauge on railways in the former Soviet Union.
Prime Minister Theresa May will visit China later this year, with talks likely to include closer trade ties for when Britain leaves the European Union, according to British officials.

Its mention as "The Shortest Route between Tatanagar Junction and Yesvantpur Junction is 588 km (24%) shorter."
Is there any train that has more than 24% deviation from its shortest path travelling for than 1000km?

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has launched a big hunt to trace an electric loco of the Tughlakabad shed that is reported missing since last month.
Reports said that engine number 23384 was supposed to reach its home shed – Tughlakabad near Delhi – on June 15 for scheduled repair. When the loco did not arrive, officials at the shed assumed that it may be on duty in some part of the country and will make its way back soon.
When that didn't happen by month end, a search was launched but the
shed officials failed in the endeavour.
Soon, the matter was reported to the Railway Board and it in turn, sent out an order to all railway zones to direct the 60,000 strong force of loco pilots and assistant loco pilots to assist in the search.
Since then, the loco pilots have been on the lookout for the missing 120 tonne loco...

Main points : 1) 50% refund on cancelling tatkal tickets. (Although a good move but very few will be using this facility as people book tatkal due to urgency)
2) Changing timing of tatkal timings. (But this is already being followed)
3) New time table will be w.e.f. 01st October 2016.
No extra charges will be leived while booking with Credit/debit cards from counters. (Good move but these counters are available only at very few stations)
5) 50% refund on cancelling suvidha tickets also.
6) Number of coaches in Rajdhanis & Shatabdis will be increased.
7) Premium trains will be discontinued. Suvidha trains will take place. (Both are same only except change of name and absence of catering facility in suvidha)
8) Premium tatkal will be available from counters also. (What a big deal in this but yes, people will save IRCTC & Bank charges at least)
9) Only mobile tickets will be allowed in Rajdhani & Shatabdi. ( I didn't understand this. Wheather they mean that tickets will be availble only through IRCTC? If yes then IRCTC & Bank charges for full Rajdhani/Shatabdi.)
10) A facebook page will be created where people can put their complaints. (Good Move)

One of my fav trains. I have few memories to share about this train.
1. We would take this train from New Farakka to go to Calcutta. It would arrive by around 9 PM to reach Sealdah early by around 5-6 AM
2. It was few trains in India during 1990-92 to have Steam engine as a loco. I remember that it used to run on Steam engine till Bardhawaan
From Bardhwaan it used to get Electric Loco till Sealdah
4. Never had any AC coach till 1992 (last when I traveled)
5. I used to get down with my family at Bardwaan to go to Raniganj. Generally Asansol Bardhwaan passenger was our preferred train.
6. It was single track over Farakka Bridge and only two platform at Farakka, with second platform being on the ground. Getting down at Farakka while coming from Bardhwaan used to be a problem as always.
This train was and will always be my favorite.

This is train is still the first choice for the people travelling from Malda & Farakka to Calcutta/ Sealdah. Some changes after that are listed below :
1) Now it's having 1A, 2A & 3A in addition to SL & Gen coaches.
2) Runs with diesel engine.
3) Mostly runs with RAC & WL because of the demand.
It was shifted to KOAA from SDAH after KOAA terminal got ready but due to the resistance from public and politicians it was again reinstated from SDAH only and running to the same terminal now.
5) For few months it was having a slip route to Katihar but was discontinued after KIR got one train of its own, the HATEY-BAZARE Express which now runs upto Saharsa.
6) For few months it was having a slip route to Radhikapur but was discontinued after RDP got one train of its own, the RDP-KOAA express.
7) Now it is running with a slip route to Balurghat.
8) Earlier this train used to depart from PF no 7 or 8 from SDAH. Now it departs from 9A/9B. Stands with Darjeeling mail on the other PF.
9) NTPC Farakka runs connecting bus services for this train to its townships.
This is one of my favourite train also. I travelled to Calcutta for the first time GOUR EXPRESS only. Didn't sleep in night waiting to see Calcutta. When train was about to reach BWN, i woke up my dad telling - we are about to reach Cacutta. My dad said " there is still 3 hrs to to go my son, please sleep otherwise you will able to enjoy the day.
I will never forget that journey. That was my first overnight journey.

The Railway Board has approved the diversion of five pairs of passenger trains via Barauni-Shahpur Patoree-Sonepur - Pataliputra Junction-Danapur instead of Barauni-Mokama- Patna-Danapur with effect from August 1, 2016.
According to an East Central Railway notification, these trains are Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (12423-12424), Guwahati-Anand Vihar North East Express (12505-12506), Guwahati-New Delhi Purvottar Samapark Kranti Express (12501-12502), Kamakhya-Lokman Tilak Express (12519-12520) and Jogbani-Anand Vihar Seemanchal Express (12487-12488).
to Danapur DRM R K Jha, these trains will have stoppages at Pataliputra Junction. "The Guwahati-New Delhi Purvottar Seemanchal Kranti Express will only have operational stoppage at Pataliputra Junction where the train's crew will change," he said, adding the Board has also allowed temporary stoppage of two minutes of these trains at Danapur station.
