VAST IMPROVEMENT IN PUNCTUALITY OF IR TRAINS
Today, 13040 DLI-HWH Janata Express ought to have received a rousing welcome when it reached Howrah Station at 12.21, only 6 hrs 16 mns late. Usually this train is late by a minimum of 12 hours and often 16 hours late. Very good performance considering it left DLI, 1543 kms away, 1 hour and 15 mns late at 16.55 on 25th July, losing only an extra 5 hrs time on the way.
Its counterpart UP train 13039 which departed from Howrah at 20.20 on 25th July, performed even better departing from Ghaziabad today at 12.28 instead of 11.02, merely I hour 26 mns late. Expected to reach DLI at 14.20, 1 hr 40 mns late, the train will cover the distance of 20 kms from

This one is specially dedicated to Mr. K.S.Gopal**.
12301/12302 Howrah Rajdhani Express was introduced on 3rd March 1969 as a fully air-conditioned bi-weekly superfast express between Howrah and New Delhi with a journey time of 17 hours.
At the time of introduction, the train was numbered as 101/102.
It used to depart from Howrah on Mondays and Fridays at 17.10 pm and arrive at New Delhi at 10.10 am on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
It used to depart from New Delhi on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 18.15 pm and arrive at Howrah at 10.50 am on Thursdays and Sundays.
The train offered 2 classes

AC Chair Car and AC Sleeper, equivalent to present day 1AC as there were no 2AC and 3AC then.
Stoppages en route were three in number Dhanbad, Mughalsarai and Kanpur. Now 3 extra stoppages at Parasnath, Gaya and Allahabad.
Food served was top class and tickets were specially designed like the old air tickets with blue or red jackets.
Only small hand baggage was permitted in the AC Chair Cars and suitcases and other bulky pieces of luggage were to be booked in the 2 brake vans at both ends of the train, one near the loco and another near the guard van. However bigger pieces were allowed in the AC Sleeper Class. Passengers were advised to reach the originating station at least 30 mns before departure so that luggage could easily be booked for storage in the brake van.
The train was initially hauled by a Diesel Loco till complete electrification of the HWH-DELHI route in 1976.
An idea of the fares prevailing in 1986 for the full journey from end-to-end was AC Chair Car Rs. 330 and AC Sleeper Class Rs. 1090 although I have once travelled by this train from HWH to New Delhi paying Rs. 175 for AC Chair Car.
Later on the train was made to run 4 days a week and then on a 5th day in the week via Patna. (2305/2306)
Finally it started plying 6 days a week while the Sunday service from HWH via Patna continued unchanged.
It then maintained a very punctual record of running both ways and still remains one of IR's most prestigious trains.

Two humorous posts by Albus Dumbledore** and pkvenkatramani**
THE SPEECH by Albus Dumbledore**
A Schoolmaster from a remote rural area was transferred to a school in Bombay. He reported for duty two days before August 15 and, as was the practice in the school, was asked to address the assembly on Independence Day.
Here's his dynamite speech : Leddies and Gentulmens, Contemporaries, Children, "This is my first maiden speech. If small small mistakes get inside my speech, I ask pardon. Stickly speaking, I wanted to joint your school more fastly, but for the following reason. Too much time lost in getting slipper reservation in three-tyre compartment. The clerk rejected to give ticket. I put complaint on station master. He said me to

go to lady clerk. At first she also rejected. I then pressed her for long time and at last with great difficulty she gave a birth only to my son. Anyway I thanked the station master because he was responsible for getting birth of my son. We got independent because of great leaders linke Gandhiji who get-outted all angrezi peoples from India. Tilak said Swaraj is our birth-rate and we shall halve it. Today we all halve our birth-rate. You children are future dynamic generators of the Nation. Look into future time only. No backside looking, or looking at your behind. Be like great like X' raj Ranjan of Germany or Presidents like Loosebelt. You know genius, no? It is one per cent perspiration and ninety seven percent evaporation. They became great by reading great books. After we finish you here in the school, you can go to college and get B.A., M.A. and other decrease. Then you can become great liars in the supreme courts, shattered accountants, or leacherers in college. The school is like a garden. You are the seeds, school is the soil. We will bury you in this soil, pour water of knowledge on your heads and one day will become great phools. Many vacancy job come in newspapers. Only yesterday I saw in paper "Wanted for refuted engineering firm: Generators, highpower condensors" so and so forth, etc. These jobs may be teknickel, but you can rise. If you have flare in English, you can become teacher. I am now ending this fastly. My God blast you! Thank you and thank God I am finished. Joy Hind!"
Reply by pkvenkatramani**
This school was visited by the Inspector of Schools who was outraged at the very poor standard of the students' English.
Furious, he thundered at the assembled teachers in the staff room
"Who IS the headmaster" he roared
" Sir, I, IS the headmaster" a short gentleman in the group replied meekly
" What, you ARE the headmaster " shouted the Inspector
The short man corrected himself saying" Sorry sir,I ARE the headmaster".
