Vadodara: Heavy rains in south Gujarat on Tuesday hit rail traffic movement on Mumbai route adversely impacting travel plans of commuters from central Gujarat.
While two trains – Valsad-Dahod and Valsad-Viramgam – got cancelled, several trains were running late on Tuesday.
Although many trains had left Vadodara railway station on time, waterlogging on railway track at Valsad delayed the trains from reaching Mumbai.
Monday’s incident of derailment of some wagons of a goods train near Nadiad had also impacted the timings of some trains which reached late at Vadodara station.
The trains running late included Secunderabad-Rajkot Express, Gujarat Express – both of which were running one and a half hour late while Vivek Express

was running late by two and a half hours. Firozpur-Janta Express was running late by fifty minutes.
Sayajinagari Express had arrived half an hour late at Vadodara railway station while Kutch Express, which had arrived late at Vadodara railway station by nearly 80 minutes, reached Mumbai after four hours delay.
Although Jaipur Bandra Express had arrived only five minutes late at Vadodara railway station, it was late by around four hours while on its way to Mumbai.
Saurashtra Mail was half an hour late at Vadodara railway station and was running two and half hours late.
The Valsad-Haridwar Express was re-scheduled. Instead of its scheduled time, it was re-scheduled with six hours delay.

नासिक Nasik (NK): Thousands of long-distance passengers were stranded on different stretches of Central Railway after a boulder fell on the tracks close to Igatpuri station on the Nashik-Kasara line on Wednesday. Officials attributed the fall to incessant rains in the region.
The incident was reported about 8.30 am at a spot nearly 4 km from Igatpuri and the barreling rock took the overhead wires along with it. The immediate effect of the mishap was that several trains that were close to Nashik and Igatpuri had to be halted.
What compounded the problem was the timing as the morning hours are among the most busy as far as trains coming from the east and north into Mumbai on CR’s lines are concerned. Local train commuters were spared from inconvenience as the boulder-hit

site is out of CR’s suburban limits.
On any normal day, the North-East section of CR that is the Kasara-Nashik stretch sees close to 160 train movements, including 50 pairs of mail and express trains that come into and go out of Mumbai and 10 pairs of goods trains in and out of Mumbai. On Wednesday, the movements had come down to less than 10 said CR officials.
Among the trains that got stalled immediately were the 12262 Howrah-Mumbai Duronto and the 13201 Patna-Kurla LTT Express, both trains which generally come into the city packed. This incident also meant that there was a bunching of long-distance trains in the city – on the fifth line right from Bhandup to Vidyavihar, just at the entrance of Kurla Terminus.
Most passengers on the Kurla LTT-Muzaffarpur Express, which was stuck near Bhandup station, were seen squatting along the tracks. “There is no announcement or clarity on when the train would move,” said Rakesh Vishwakarma.
The boulder fall also caused operational hardship for the train-runners – one driver got hurt while piloting a train – as well as passengers as CR decided to run several trains from Igatpuri instead of Mumbai. This meant that passengers with tickets on those train from Mumbai would have to reach Igatpuri somehow to board their train.
While top CR officials rushed to the spot, authorities pressed two specially equipped trains to fix the overhead wires and the tracks. Officials around 6pm said that the tentative time for the clearing of the line was 9pm on Wednesday.

मुंबई Mumbai: Rail and road traffic to and from Mumbai was hit by a series of landslides. While Central Railway services were affected by landslides near Igatpuri on Wednesday, the Mumbai-Agra National Highway witnessed landslides at five places. While road traffic returned to normal in three hours, rail connectivity was badly affected and many trains were rescheduled or diverted.
A landslide was triggered in Igatpuri at 8am, which received 234mm of rainfall in the 24 hours till Wednesday 8.30am. Trains to Mumbai were stopped at nearest stations. “The landslide affected the Up track (towards Mumbai), so trains were diverted to the Down track (towards Nashik),” a railway official said. There is a third track in the ghat section which ensured movement of trains was not completely stopped. The Down track was cleared by 5pm, but work continued on the other track.

“Some trains to Mumbai returned either from Igatpuri or Nashik. Arrangements were made for people to continue on by bus till Kasara and other areas,” the official said.
CR officials said the landslide occurred from the site abutting a resort on the hillock.
A CR spokesperson said, “The incident led to short termination of five services including Nagpur-Mumbai Sewagram Express and Aurangabad-Dadar Janshatabdi Express.” Three trains, the Varanasi-Mumbai Mahanagari Express, Patna-Mumbai Express and Gorakhpur-Mumbai Godan Express were diverted via Manmad-Daund-Pune-Kalyan.
Landslides on the highway caused distress to motorists. “A landslide was reported at 8.30am at five spots around 53km from Nashik in the Kasara ghat section,” police said.

Several passenger and express trains in Ahmedabad-Mumbai route have been running behind schedule due to waterlogged tracks, as heavy rain continued to pound southern Gujarat for the past 12 hours.
The rains that threw normal life out of gear in places like Valsad, Navsari and Surat also inundated major highways connecting the state with Mumbai.
As many as 14 villages in Umargam have been marooned and cut-off, prompting district administration to dispatch teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to rescue people stranded there.
Valsad recorded 12 inches of rain on Monday night, which inundated low lying areas and threw traffic out of gear.

and under the bridges have been submerged.
Valsad district officials, who continue to monitor the situation, said at least 150 families in Timbi village have been evacuated to a temple from the inundated areas.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Valsad District Collector Vikrant Pandey said: “The situation was grim, but the NDRF and SRPF teams rushed to the marooned areas and rescue people, especially in the low lying areas of Timbi and Jawaharnagar in Umargam.”
Pandey added that the situation is under control since the rains have abated.

BHUBANESWAR: Southern and western pockets of Odisha were pounded by heavy shower as the low pressure off the State’s coast remained stationary. Jeypore received a whopping 270 mm rain in the last 24 hours, the highest in the State. The district headquarters town Koraput also recorded 175 mm rain which led to mudslide affecting normal life and even hitting train services in the region. The Durg-Jagdalpur Express, carrying 77 passengers, was detained en route late last night as railway tracks along Koraput-Jagdalpur section were blocked following a mudslide caused by heavy shower. With trees and boulders preventing passage of trains, the train was detained at about 1.30 am.
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) sent a relief train to bring back the stranded passengers to Jarati station. Later, arrangements were made for their transportation to different destinations on road.

The mudslide affected train traffic movement along the route. Though Railway teams reached the site on foot, the tracks could be cleared only by Monday afternoon. Senior Railway officials from Koraput and Jagdalpur also reached the site to clear the obstruction on track and resume train operations. Officials from Visakhapatnam are also on their way.
The ECoR sources said damage to track was huge but restoration operation was underway on a war-footing. Normal train movement will resume on Tuesday.
At least three trains - Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand Express, Jagdalpur-Howrah Samaleswari Express and Jagdalpur-Durg Express were cancelled between Jagdalpur and Koraput because of the disruption on Monday. Five more trains were also regulated.
Meanwhile, the weather office said the weather system will continue to trigger rain in south Odisha on Tuesday.
The rainfall zone, however, will shift to western and central Odisha before reaching north Odisha in next 48 hours.
Large parts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts received heavy shower in the last 24 hours due to the low pressure. Bhawanipatna with 170 mm, Bargarh with 120 mm and Narla with 110 mm topped the rainfall chart after Jeypore and Koraput.
Director, IMD, Odisha SC Sahu said the system is expected to induce more rain in northern Odisha by July 30. Under its impact, showers will continue well into next week. “Model prediction says the rainfall will continue till August 4-5,” he added.
Meanwhile, the State Government has asked the district collectors to keep a close eye on the rainfall situation.

PUNE: A major tragedy was averted when a three-wheeler driverless tempo hit a boom barrier at the railway crossing near Dapodi station and crashed into a goods train heading towards Pune. The driver had got out of the stalled tempo and was pulling the starter cord from behind when the vehicle, which was in gear, sprung to life and hit the train. The accident took place around 9.15am on Sunday. The tempo, which was cut into two, could have caused the train to derail. Rail traffic on the Pune-Mumbai route was disrupted for about 15 minutes following the accident, a central railway official said. The tempo driver fled after the accident. The railway authorities have given the tempo's registration number to the regional transport office (RTO) to get information about the owner and the driver.

accident, told TOI that the barrier was down at the crossing as the train was about to reach Dapodi station. "The tempo driver had stopped the vehicle near the barrier when the engine shut off. The driver got down to pull the starter cord located at the back of the tempo when all of a sudden the engine started. As the tempo was in first gear, it rammed into the barrier and also hit the train," he said."Panic spread at the busy crossing following the incident. A large number of people gathered at the spot. The train too made an unscheduled halt at the Dapodi railway station," Bhosale said.
A railway officer said the gate was closed for the day to replace the damaged barrier. "The railway protection force (RPF) is investigating the case," he added.
On May 3, three people, including two women, were killed and 11 others were injured, two of them critically, when the Secunderabad-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Duronto Express collided with a tractor trolley at a manned crossing about 40km from Pune.
The tractor had two trolleys attached to it and was ferrying 20 sugarcane harvesters for work at Khamgaon village located on the other side of railway track. The accident occurred at gate number 10 at Khamgaon phata near Yavat, when the gate's barrier opened soon after a goods train travelling towards Daund had crossed. The tractor-trolley was the last among all vehicles to cross the gate. The first trolley had just cleared the track but the second trolley was hit by the Duronto Express.

Kochi: Though the state government has not framed the rules for the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (LARRA), the new order issued in favour of the ongoing acquisitions will bring a fresh lease of life to various projects, including the Kochi Metro Rail.
Projects such as Kochi Metro were hit by land acquisition hurdles owing to the delay in framing new policies for the amended Land Acquisition Act. The Act of 1894 was amended only last year and LARRA came into force in January 2014.
However, majority of the government agencies were not in a position to carry out the land acquisition as per the new Act as the State Government has not framed the rules. As a consequence land acquisition of various

projects came to a standstill.
In an Order issued earlier this month, the Government clarified that in cases where 4(1) Notification have been issued but declarations under section 6 (Declaration that land is required for a public purpose) have not been issued, the declaration under LA Act 1894 is to be issued immediately so that the acquisition proceedings can be completed.
In its order, the Government also clarified that in cases where the land value is already fixed, an agreement should be entered into with the land owners that further compensation, if any, will be paid only after framing rules and regulations for LARRA.
“In cases where declarations under section 6 have already been issued, land value has to be fixed by the District Level Purchase Committee (DLPC) and complete acquisition procedures without further delay,” the Government Order stated.
The new order will give a fresh breath of life to the Kochi Metro Rail project, for which the authorities have already acquired 34 hectares of the total 40 hectares required.
For the remaining 6 hectares, the authorities are facing many stumbling blocks, the main one being the delay in framing the rules under LARRA.
With the State Government issuing the new order, the Agency believes that they will be able to complete the land acquisition procedures by August, as per their scheduled deadline.
“We have initiated proceedings to complete the land acquisition of the Metro Rail project as per the new Government Order. It is expected to be completed within the stipulated time,” Ernakulam District Collector M G Rajamanickam told
