Hundreds of passengers were de-boarded from a Noida-bound metro train here on Wednesday morning when it developed a snag just after it departed from the Dwarka Sector 14 station. The technical problem that developed around 9-15 a.m. affected peak hour commuters across the line, particularly those at the Dwarka sub-city section of the Delhi Metro’s Blue Line. The train had to be removed from the tracks and another train was pressed into service, which caused delay, on a line that sees an average of seven lakh passengers daily.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson, metro services were affected due to technical problem with a train after it left the Dwarka Sector 14 platform as its power brakes restricted its forward movement. “Immediate troubleshooting was attempted by sending a technical team under the frame of the train to release the

brakes. However, the train could not move ahead, and in order to avoid any unwarranted delay and the cascading effect in the services on the entire line, it was preferred to de-board around 500 passengers from the train. The train was then withdrawn from service and sent to the depot for further investigation,” said the spokesperson.
To tide over the problem, a single line operation was introduced between Dwarka and Dwarka Sector-21 while trains were running as per normal schedule from Dwarka to Noida/Vaishali. “Once the affected train was withdrawn from the main line, normal train services were also restored on Dwarka sub-city section at 10 a.m.,” said the spokesperson.
Earlier this month, commuters bore the brunt when services were badly hit on the Dwarka-Noida City Centre/Vaishali line as a portion of the overhead electrification wire of the track going towards Dwarka snapped between Janakpuri West and Uttam Nagar East stations.

MUMBAI: The schedule of Central Railway (CR) was badly affected on Sunday after a compartment of a suburban train derailed at CST around 10.50am.
"Two pairs of wheels of the Panvel-CST local went off tracks as the train arrived on platform 2 at CST," an official said.
"Five coaches of the train had already entered CST when the derailment occurred. No passenger was injured in the incident," he added. CR officials immediately blocked platforms 1 and 2 and expedited the process of fixing the snag. "We are conducting a detailed inquiry into what went wrong. We will be taking corrective steps to ensure it does not happen again. Fortunately, it was not a weekday or else thousands of office-goers would have been stranded," said a senior CR official.

Soon after the derailment, CR officials "called off the Sunday mega block" on Harbour and Main lines. "In reality, the workers on tracks were asked to reach CST for the repair work. The mega block wasn't cancelled at all. As a result, scores of commuters were inconvenienced," said a source.
Commuters complained that there were no trains in Nerul and booking clerks were not issuing tickets for Nerul to Mankhurd or CST.
A senior CR official said, "The trains ran according to the mega block schedule. Besides, 10 Up and Down trains on Harbour line were cancelled, disturbing the frequency of services after derailment." Sources said trains on the Main line ran 20 to 25 minutes behind schedule and were crowded.
Several passengers planning to reach CST to catch long-distance trains were badly hit. Stations witnessed huge rush of commuters as trains ran behind schedule.
The fault was rectified around 12.46pm and the tracks for Harbour line were cleared by 1.30 pm, sources said. Many passengers were forced to travel by road to reach Mumbai. However, there was a shortage of taxis and buses ran packed .

A coach of a Panvel-CST train derailed on its arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus on Sunday. No injuries have been reported.

The derailment, coupled with Sunday’s mega block, added to the Central Railway (CR) suburban commuters’ woes as several trains remained cancelled and delayed.
Around 10.50am, two wheels of the second coach of a train derailed at platform number 2 of CST. It took nearly two hours for the railway administration to re-rail the coach. Around 12.46pm, the coach was rerailed and at 1.33pm, the coach was cleared.
More than 10 services were cancelled during this period.

The railways had announced a mega block on Mulund and Matunga fast line towards CST, and between Nerul and Mankhurd from 1am to 3pm.
Following the derailment, though the railways officials claimed they revoked the mega block, the services did not resume.
“Our maintenance staff was utilised to rerail the coach and so the mega block was cancelled. However, the mega block schedule for suburban train operations was followed,” said a railway official, requesting anonymity.
The CR mega block was operated on the Mulund-Matunga fast corridor to carry out maintenance work. Consequently, the fast trains were diverted on to the slow corridor, resulting in congestion on the route.
On harbour line, the block was imposed between Nerul and Mankhurd, as a result of which all trains between CST and Panvel remain suspended.
Commuters complained of overcrowding in trains and at stations, as the number of services operated during the mega block was much lesser than routine.
“Thane station was extremely crowded. Even on working days, we don’t witness such crowd. I understand railways need time for maintenance, but they should increase the services,” said Kalpesh Joshi, a Thane resident.

SRINAGAR - By Krista Mahr and Fayaz Bukhari
About 150,000 people were still stranded in their homes a week after Jammu and Kashmir's worst flood in over a century and fears grew on Sunday of an outbreak of diseases from vast fields of stagnant brown water.
Indian army and civilian boats trawled through the streets - now water channels - of capital Srinagar, picking up residents and delivering water, food and basic medicine to people who chose to remain camped out in the upper floors of their houses.
The state administration, which was itself knocked out after the waters of the Jhelum river gushed into the city centre, has struggled to cope with the flood, the worst in 109 years.
...

The disaster has fuelled public anger in the Muslim-majority region where a revolt against Indian rule has simmered for nearly a quarter century.
Officials said they did not have enough pumps to drain out the water that had swept through Srinagar, a city of 1 million ringed by mountains. Several of the state's pumps were under water and 30 new ones had been ordered from New Delhi.
"Stagnant water is much more dangerous than flowing water," said Dr. Showkat Zargar, the director of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), one of the few functioning hospitals in the city.
"There are a lot of animals that have died," he said. "This is the biggest source of infection."
Not far from the hospital, dozens of dead cows lay on either side of the road on Sunday morning after a dairy flooded last week.
Both the Indian and Pakistan sides of the disputed Himalayan territory have been hit by extensive flooding since the Jhelum river, swollen by unusually heavy rain, surged last week. The river flows from Kashmir to the Pakistan side, and then down into Pakistan's lower Indus river basin.
The government has put the death toll at 200 in the part of Kashmir it controls but there are fears that number will rise as the damage to Srinagar and villages in southern Kashmir is fully revealed.
On the Pakistani side, officials put the death toll at 264 on Friday.
RESCUED
In Srinagar's southern neighbourhood of Raj Bagh, a boatload of army personnel stopped at the Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School and helped five nuns clamber down a steep ladder from the school, where they'd been stranded for six days and were running out of drinking water.
"We haven't had any contact with the outside world," said Sister Elsie Thomas, taking in the eerie waterworld where plastic bottles, snarls of barbed wire and the odd dead animal floated alongside underwater automated teller machines and hair salons.
But many others have not been as lucky, and have waited days for rescue in vain, fueling anger among residents toward the army and the state government which they said has been absent in the disaster.
As the same army craft made its way through the narrow canals, a boat of several men shouted angrily at the soldiers.
"We don't need your help!" one man yelled. "Whatever you have, we don't need any of it!"
Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are deployed in the Kashmir Valley, where the army says it has succeeded in putting down the armed groups that it believes are supported by Pakistan.
A new generation of young Kashmiris, who have grown up with house raids and army checkpoints, feel increasingly angry at Indian rule and champion street protests rather than the violent militancy that characterized the 1990s.
Jammu and Kashmir Revenue Secretary Vinod Kaul said it was natural for citizens to blame their government when struck by a disaster of this scale. "This is a democratic system," he said.
As the army boat passed, people standing at the water's edge asked for specific drugs like blood pressure or diabetes medication, which the volunteers onboard were not carrying.
"People can't get their drugs, so their diseases are becoming emergencies," said Zardar.
One 35-year-old man died in the hospital on Sunday after suffering a heart attack while stranded in his home. In another case, a man who had a treatable injury from a car crash before the floods could not return to the hospital for care, developed gangrene, and had to have his leg amputated.
"The real injuries are going to reach us now," said Zargar. "Patients who have broken limbs are still sitting at home. Once the roads are open, there will be a flood of patients."
