Historically, most of the railway lines in North Bengal and Assam were MG. But following gauge conversion, the new stations were either located in close vicinity of the erstwhile MG stations or were parallel to them, in places where both gauges continued to co-exist. This is the primary reason for the their nomenclature as NEW ****** . But Joydeep Roy, our AMBASSADOR ADMIN from North Bengal can hopefully shed more light on this.
