Pit lines have a great impact on the Station's capability of handling trains in so far originating and terminating train are concerned.
Many trains have either been truncated before Trivandrum station in view of inadequate pit lines at Trivandrum station which is experiencing saturation level currently. In fact many trains have even been extended to Nagercoil or Tirunelveli in view of pit lines problems at Trivandrum station.
Such is the importance of pit lines.

First....Can you please explain what are the functions ot PIT Line?
.
Second...the above explanation given to the first blogger i think you borrowed from blog#33334 where you initially stated that (I wish to differ on the point that Trivandrum station has acquired saturation point for handling anymore trains. It's not so and not a bigger issue in handling a weekly train. Kochuveli is an additional terminating station for Trivandrum.) this statnement is by you. So now you are giving the above explanation to the 1st bloger from some other bloggers
...
statement from 33334. Then why did you intially commented on Trivandrum like that?
That means you dont know the graound reality. Just assuming isnt?
.
Third....How many persons in Tirunelveli know where the Hapa is or rather How many persons in Hapa know where the Tirunelveli is ? (these line are by you) Is railway running train on this logic?
Train 6337/8 how many running between OKHA and Ernakulam how many people in my state (kerala) know where this okha is? I think this train is as old as KRC.
.
Fourth....And looking at the time table for 2997/Tirunelveli Hapa SF Express ... reaching its destination.. the end station ... @ 2.00 am ... the unearthly hour....(these line are by you) Is railway running only on day time and not night?.....Train no 6333 pls see this train starting time from VERAVEL
is this not an odd hour? also running for more than a decade.
..
With disagreeing with the TVC station now you are giving it as an example.....what is this.
.
Thanks

Pit lines used for inspection and routine maintenance work of under carriage parts. More over, it is used for all type of cleaning and maintenance to make the compartment, for next journey.

Pit Line are washing lines with open dumping pit at base, throughout the track.
- These pit are utilized to drain out sewage water (Washroom & Coach Interior Cleaning).
- Thorough Checking & Repairing Coach Base parts
- Newer Pit Line are equipped with water pressure cleaning facility, to wipe out exterior of coaches!!

#Is no of Pit Line dirctly proportional to no. of train originating??
Yeah, it does!!
But that depends on many factors like,
1. Pit Line Capacity & Efficiency- Single Pit Line with 24 Coach Handling Capacity can easily manage more trains, when compared with Pit Line of 10-15 Coach Capacity
eg. LKO Pit Line manages LKO Mail & Gomti Exp (24 Rake) at one shot, while SLN manages Sadbhawna (18-22 Rake) in two shifts
2. Primary vs Secondary Maintenance Depot - If the Station act as secondary Maintenance Depot for most originating trains, Low Count of Pit Line can manage increased numbers.
eg. NDLS/NZM is secondary maintenance point for most DRNTO & so no extra Pit Line required for DRNTO.
3. Train Run - Station having Intercity trains as originating/terminating point can manage with lesser Pit Line, while opposite for long running train's station.
eg. LKO vs LJN - LKO do have intercity as originating/terminating point & so is managing with existing Pit Line, while LJN got many long run trains recently & so got 5 Pit Line recently!!
4. Train Timing - If trains' departing time are close (withle difference between Arrival and Departure), with increasing no, then saturation point may achieved faster (with limited no of Pit Line). Then either
- Newer Pit Line need to be installed or
- Switching of train to nearby station or
- Weekly Train will remain Weekly or
- Non-introduction of train or
- Non-managed & unclean rake would become practice
etc etc

Sir, sometimes we find that pit lines are close to the existing platforms. Is it possible that even pit lines can be sometimes convered to platforms in such cases where suffcient space is availabe bet.existing platform and pit line.So that same pit line can be used as platform in busy time and also for maintaince work in other time?
thanks.

Instead of saying what are the uses of pit lines as asked by the blogger you are describing the state of Trivandrum stations's Pit line and not describing for what the pit line aree used for.

If Pit Line are close to Platfrom or Local/Sourcing train can be started, then the Pit Line can be hifted & the original one can be converted into Platform!!!
In NDLS, this process is on-going!!!
Most Pit Lines, in between Platform has been converted into Platform!!!

Vide # 33334 dt. 22.4.2010, the views were exressed by many including mine being a original blogger of that blog post ... about Hapa Tirunelveli Express/ 2998 - a newly started service by the Rlys. At that time it was debated .. how the both ends Hapa - Tirunelveli selected for this new train as it was required to be upto Trivandrum.
@ The mystery still remains intact about these two ends. Okha-Ernakulam is on the logic of joining two coastal areas of Arabian Sea / Gulf of Kutch having a lot common in fisheries, Port etc. Veraval express is also on similar grounds.

The problem of pit lines was never expected to be so grave that a single weekly train can not be terminated. Still I am of the view that it's not impossible to accomodate such weekly single train within the pit lines problems at Trivandrum. Post 22.4.2010 , I have gathered info on pit lines and its difficulties faced at Trivandrum through Goggle and the reply in this blog is accordingly based.
@ Here the original query is entirely different ? The blogger has asked the use of pit lines in the first part and asked for its relation with number of trains capacity at the station for originating and terminating of trains.
I have replied to the original blogger to the extent of second part of the query. The first part is already well answered by fello bloggers. In case anybody stil wants more specific info, they may do so by raising another blog.
@ Note that there is no compulsion of the part of the admins / logged in bloggers to reply to any blog query as All are participating and rendering voluntary services.

Tirunelvelli-Happa train 2997/8 is not a WEEKLY train it is a BI-WEEKLY train.
Recently i was trvelling in this train and was found to have more tamil people (more than 50%) passengers going towards Tirunelvelli, Nagarcoil, and even to Madurai from Gujrath and Maharashtra regions.

The train Hapa - Tirunelveli - was initially launched as weekly train and later it has been made bi-weekly.
@ As such any route - any train .. passengers are so many that Railways will get them anyway. Particularly any number of trains on Gujarat /Saurashtra to Mumbai is far far success and high revenue earner for Rlys.
@ What is more important is that how many are end to end passengers ? Most of the pasengers are intermediate stop passengers .. and very

minimal percentage even less than 5% .....long distance passengers from either Hapa or from Tirunelveli. In a way, the train becomes inter-city trains for in-between stations. During summer /Diwali season, you find many passengers who are on a tour to Kanyakumari / Rameswaram .. exiting at Nagarcoil. Tirunelveli just got the terminating spot in view of Rlys difficulties and there is no reason to make the Tirunelveli as the due spot for such a long distance train. The same is with Hapa terminal point.
@ The proposal with WR was for a train between Rajkot -Trivandrum / Kanyakumari or increasing the frequency of Veraval Express/ 6333 - weekly Train to a daily train.

This train was announced in the budget as BI WEEKLY train and due to the lack of rake it was started as weekly and then into bi weekly.
