PQWL is one of the many Waiting List types that appear on reservation tickets. Practically speaking this is a Waiting List. Technically, there’s a difference between PQWL, CKWL, GNWL etc. The total seats available for reservation on a train are divided among different quotas. There’s the ladies quota, tatkal quota and general quota. Some trains also have what is called the Pooled Quota or PQ. When you book a ticket to a station for which tickets are issued from the pooled quota, then you get a pooled quota waiting list or PQWL if all the tickets available in the PQ quota have already been booked. This is similar to CKWL (Waiting list on the tatkal quota). The pooled quota is used for a bunch of stations who share a pool of tickets. These are relatively minor stations, at least as far as that particular train is concerned. For eg. if you...

were to book a ticket from Bangalore(SBC) to Rajamundry(RJY) on the Guwahati Express (2509), then you would get tickets assigned from the Pooled Quota. Waiting lists from this PQ quota appear as PQWL on the ticket.

Pooled Quota WL - Maintained for pooled quota (starting station to end station). PQ is starting to end station quota, different from General quota, used to allot intermediate station passengers, preconfigured in system, which are not considered for GN, RS and RL quotas.
This is to "benefit" long distance passengers and "restrict" too many short distance passengers to "limited" berths under PQ.

Pooled Quota Waiting List ('PQWL') is shared by several small stations in a particular region. E.g., Tiruppur, Salem, etc., share in the quota and wait list for some trains originating from Trivandrum or Mangalore. As another example, the 2723 Andhra Pradesh Exp. has three quotas, for Secunderabad - New Delhi, Secunderabad - nagpur, and Secunderabad - Bhopal.Pooled Quotas normally operate only from the originating station of a route, and there is only one Pooled Quota for the entire run.

intended to be utilized by passengers travelling from the originating station to a station short of the terminating station, or from an intermediate station to the terminating station, or between two intermediate stations. Such remote location quotas are also provided when there is a very strong demand for the train in question, because of which, without such additional quotas, all seats or berths might be fully consumed by passengers from the originating station leaving nothing available for those wishing to travel from intermediate points. Vacant Pooled Quota berths are automatically tapped by the PRS for booking end-to-end passengers. Passengers in the Pooled Quota Waiting List are cleared against the vacancies in the earmarked Pooled Quota only, or against General Quota vacancies available at the time of charting.

Thanks for that knowledge sharing.. So what is the net effect?? A passenger with a PQWL (mostly from starting staion) should be having more chances of confirmation or the one with GNWL from the same staion, and same waiting list #..
Also I have seen PQWL is a much slow moving insect than GNWL i.e it will remain on a particular waiting no. for days and may be confirmed only a day or two before the departure or infact not before chart preparation... Am i right in this view??

PQWL doesnot have anything to de with GNWL.They are not assigned to same set of stations i.e. station A and B can never have both GEN and PQ Quota.

Lets say a train starts from A and go to D via B and C.It has 10 seats.Of which 7 is general and 3 dedicated seats(PQ) for intermediate station. Now, consider all

10 seats are full.So I buy a ticket for A to D and get W/L1 and buy a ticket for A to C and get PQWL/1.Now my PQWL 1 gets CNF once 1 of the 3 PQ passengers cancel and GEN gets CNF if 1 of the 7 passengers cancel. So now you decide which one stands more chance. However, PWQL goes to CNF and there is no intermediate RAC status just like TATKAL Quota however for GEN W/L RAC provision is there before CNF.

To add with Arijit Sir has said,
Sometimes PQ Quota, RL Quota are clubbed with GN Quota to make use of the unutilised quota vacancies!
Thus u might find many PNR queries here, where say out of 4, 3 passengers have been confirmed in GN Quota, and 1 remains in PQWL or RLGN(WL).
The
...
logic behind this can be derived from 97391-7, where if any GN quota remains vacant, it gets clubbed with the PQ or RL Quota!

This gives better idea about PQWL, and WL, when you explained with example.
I will give my own experience to add to your information regarding WL situation and Availability situation in same train , same day when 'from' stations' were different. To be specific I wished to go to Jabalpur by train: Jabalpur Express/1463⇒11463
This train comes from Veraval, via Rajkot,
...
Ahmedabad ... reaches Jabalpur.
As I tried to book ticket from Ahmedabad, it showed 'waiting list'
But when I searched from Rajkot, it showed awailable. Then I chose to book: Rajkot/Jabalpur, and got confirmed ticket even though I had to pay extra for travelling unnecessary 100 kms I was assured berth.
Question :1-Here question is can one book ticket from Rajkot to Jabalpur as journey ticket, but to board from Ahmedabad. This may sound waste of money for passenger, but I want to avoid travelling upto Rajokor from my native, as I find journey from my native place to Rajkot to Ahmedabad becomes longer than if I go directly to Ahmedabad. May be I waste money for journey from Rajkot to Ahmedabad, but I save time on journey from native to Rajkot.

You can change the boarding point after reservation. You have to approach any PRS centre with a written application any time after reservation but 24 hour before the scheduled departure for changing the boarding point.

Train do have single GEN & PQ Quota. If its GNWL or PQWL, it will be same across stations having this Quota.
RL Quota differs with station, like in case, ADI & RJT have different Remote Quota.

PQ

is mostly provided for
~Starting Station to any Intermediate Station or
~Intermediate Station to Destination Station,
PS: Those Intermediate Station dont have High Individual Quota (Remote Quota) & hence are been assigned Pool Quota (clubbed). Certain Stations have GEN & PQ Quota, as safeguard (in case GEN Quota is been exhausted in booking other stations) & hence booking can be seen in either GN or PQ Quota & WL is assigned after GNWL is exhausted completely!!
In Rajdhani, Remote Quota exist, as stations having stoppage either have individual quota or dont have any quota.

Sir,
I understand about GNWL being same, but diff stations enroute can share diff PQ Quota.
In Rajdhanis various PQ Quota exists along with RL Quota.
As u have said, there

are occassions where stations share PQ/RL Quota combined with GNWL, and are hence assigned when GN quota exhausts completely and/to exhaust the quota completely.

One more question,
How to understand whether a particular station shares PQ or RL quota with the starting station?

RLGN
If ticket is purchased from B or C (for journey from B-C-D or C-D , and if B or C are imp places then the ticket wud be in RLGN, and subsequently would go to WL.
(Note: In some cases, where the station shares less quota, it can be clubbed with GN Quota after GN Quota exhausts and/or to exhaust the RL Quota).
(Considering the above point, Journey here can be from A to any station).
**********************
PQ
If a train passes thry B-C(starts at A , ends at D) and if the demand of the train is high B-C can share a PQ for this train. B
Journey can be:
B-C-D or C-D
This is to prevent complete booking of this train from A.
(Note: In some cases, where the station shares less quota, it can be clubbed with GN Quota after Gh N Quota exhausts and/or to exhaust the PQ Quota).
(Considering the above point, Journey here can be from A to any station).
**********************
RLWL
When the intermediate stations do not have any RL/PQ Quota, it is assigned to Road Side Waiting List.
RL quota caters to passengers travelling from B-C-D. RL quota tickets are never available from A. When RL quota exhausts, RAC begins, and followed by RLWL. In some cases when RL Quota is small, the RLWL is active immediately. There can be more than one RLWL for some long distance trains (Rajdhani).

Start Station: A
Destination Station: B
Station C: Sharing GEN Quota along with A (eg. NDLS [A] & GZB[C])
#
Station

X: If Individual Remote Quota exist
RSWL: For WL from A to X
RLWL: For WL from X to B (or station between X-B)
#
Station Y: Big Station, with nearby small station (Group P) sharing Quota of Y
PQWL: For WL from A/C to Y/Group P
PS: Individual Quota of Station Y can be Remote or GEN & PQ is created for all such combination of Stations as like Station Y (& clubbed as single PQ Quota for entire train's route)
#
Station Z: Intermediate station having high GEN Quota from A
eg. NJP or HWH for Guwahati bound train
RLGN: For WL from Z to B or in between station (Z-B)
@@@@@
PS: These WL are generally provided, when GNWL/RLGN exhausts or when RL/RS/PQ-WL is too low as compared to GNWL/RLGN. There isnt any set rule of provision of WL. RSWL/PQWL can start before GNWL getting exhausted or RLWL can start before RLGN getting exhausted.
eg.
DBRT Rajdhani (2423)
#
NDLS-CNB (Remote Quota of CNB-RS): X
CNB-GHY (Remote Quota of CNB-RL):Y
CNB-DBRT (Remote Quota of CNB-RL): Z
X=Y+Z
But WL can gp criss-cross even for NDLS-CNB getting GNWL & CNB-GHY/DBRT getting RLGN!

A maximum quota is allotted to the train starting station and booking is permitted from source station to the destination station. The passenger can book from starting station to destination station out of this quota. At this location a small quota is allotted for the booking of passengers from a roadside station to the other roadside station, which is called PQ (Pooled Quota). When this quota is full, PQWL starts.

Contd2:
"PQWL is a small quota for remote or roadside stations for long journey. PQWL will have improve in status if other PQWL holders in front of you cancels.
Say yours is PQWL 3, and other passenger holds a ticket for PQWL 1, 2 then if he cancels his ticket then your PQWL status is upgraded to PQWL 1. And if their are any cancellations of other passengers in PQ quota. Then you fall under PQ (pooled Quota) from PQWL.
PQWL
...
status change is not as rapid as GNWL (General Wait List) because only small quota is given for PQ and only less amount of passengers book that ticket and their are also less chances for these passengers to cancel their ticket unlike GNWL passengers.
So PQWL status change is less frequent.
It is not that after GNWL completes then PQWL are considered for up-gradation.
Both are distinct quotas."
