Need for new train stemmed from oversaturation of Mysuru-Bengaluru Chamundi Express
The inaugural run of the Mysuru-Hubballi Vishwa Manava Express via Bengaluru on Tuesday marks the culmination of a long-pending demand of daily rail users in south Karnataka region.
With the introduction of this train, there are 25 train services between Mysuru and Bengaluru. Of this, 17 are daily trains while the services to Varanasi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Shirdi, Chennai Superfast service, and Dharbanga are either weekly or biweekly, besides the Mysuru-Chennai Shatabdi Express that runs six days a week.
The
...

demand for the new train stemmed from the oversaturation of the Mysuru-Bengaluru Chamundi Express, which is patronised by daily commuters and officer-goers travelling between the two cities.
Occupancy rate
Among the daily trains, the occupancy rate of Chamundi Express is in excess of 200% and as against the capacity of 1,200 passengers, nearly 2,400 passengers travel daily in each direction making the journey nerve-racking for commuters.
Its departure time from Mysuru at 6.45 a.m. and in the return direction from Bengaluru at 6.15 p.m. suited officer-goers, students and government employees and hence only regular season ticket holders would travel in it unmindful of the discomfort as it suited their timings.
But over the past few years, the public raised a demand for an additional train and this was backed by a campaign through mainstream and social media, besides posting photographs regularly of the congested coaches on Twitter and WhatsApp to the Railway Minister as also the local MPs.
The path between Mysuru and Bengaluru was also clogged and the completion of the track doubling work created capacity for introduction of additional trains, which made the Vishwa Manava Express a possibility.
The introduction of an additional express service between Mysuru and Bengaluru to suit officer goers and regular commuters was announced more than a year ago but was postponed repeatedly. While track capacity was cited as the reason till the doubling works were completed, lack of rakes was cited as another reason. The U.P. elections, lack of pit lines for maintenance either in Hubballi or Mysuru, and congestion of Bengaluru station were cited as other reasons which led to repeated postponement of the new train service till the hurdles were cleared and the service introduced.
While it will serve the needs of the inter-city travellers along the route, not many are expected to travel from the starting point to the end destination given its timings. For, the nearly 13-hour journey is best made at night to save a day.
A few tickets sold
On the inaugural run, only seven tickets were sold from Mysuru, of which three were for Davangere and four to Bengaluru but in view of the demand for the train and the rush, the passenger traffic is expected to pick up from Wednesday.

The new service from Mysuru to Hubballi via Bengaluru will pass through 13 districts
The new service from Mysuru to Hubballi via Bengaluru, (train number 17326) was flagged off from the city on Tuesday. This will be a relief to thousands of daily commuters.
The corresponding service from Hubballi (train number 17325) was also simultaneously flagged off through video link by Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu.

The train from Mysuru will depart at 6.15 a.m. to reach Bengaluru at 9.10 a.m, and depart at 9.15 a.m. and reach Hubballi at 7.05 p.m.
En route, it will have stoppages at Srirangapatna, Pandavpura, Mandya, Maddur, Channapatna, Ramanagaram, Bidadi, Kengeri, Yeshwantpur, Tumakuru, Tiptur, Arsikere, Kadur, Birur, Ajjampur, Chikjajur, Davangere, Harihar, Ranebennur, Byadagi, Haveri, and Yalvigi.
Its corresponding service will depart from Hubballi at 8 a.m. and reach Bengaluru at 5.40 p.m. and depart at 5.45 p.m. to reach Mysuru at 8.40 p.m.
The train will ease crowds on Siddaganga Intercity Express and Chamundi Express. It has 16 coaches comprising one 2nd class chair car, 13 general second class coaches, two second class luggage-cum-brake van with disable friendly compartment.
Divisional Railway Manager Atul Gupta said the train will link important centres passing through 13 districts. Pratap Simha, MP, said it was a long-felt need of the people but took herculean efforts to get the services sanctioned.
He said the growth of Mysuru and the railways in the region had made it imperative for a new satellite station either at Kadakola or Naganahalli and he would try to get the facility approved by the Railway Board. Though it was suggested that the train be named Nandi Express, Kadamba Express or Wadiyar Express, it was turned down by the authorities.
Mr. Simha said hence he mooted the idea of christening it Vishwa Manava Express as poet laureate Kuvempu gave the concept of ‘Universal Man’ from Mysuru and it was more relevant than ever before in the present times and Mr. Prabhu made the announcement during the inauguration.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurates them through video link from Delhi
Two new trains, both from Hubballi, one to tourist destination Mysuru and the other to pilgrim centre Varanasi, were flagged off at the Hubballi Railway Station through a video link from New Delhi by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday.
As Mr. Suresh Prabhu, accompanied by Railway Board members, flagged off the trains by waving the green flag, MP from Dharwad Pralhad Joshi, accompanied by MLA Prasad Abbayya, Mayor D.K. Chavan and others, too waved the green flag to signal the start

of the new services.
Among others, the former Rajya Sabha member and veteran journalist Patil Puttappa was present at the event.
Addressing the gatherings at Hubballi and Mysuru railway stations, Mr. Suresh Prabhu mentioned the efforts of MPs from Dharwad and Mysuru in getting the new services started.
Mr. Suresh Prabhu announced that the Hubballi-Mysuru train would be named as Vishwa Manava Express.
Regretting over not being able to come to Hubballi for the launch, Mr. Suresh Prabhu said that he would soon pay a visit to Hubballi to launch another facility.
The Minister also assured that the State would get connected to all important destinations through the rail route.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering, General Manager of South Western Railway (SWR) A.K. Gupta said that the Hubballi-Mysuru train would also serve as an alternative to the Mysuru-Bengaluru Chamundi Express and the Bengaluru-Dharwad Intercity Express which were running to full capacity.
On the new train to Varanasi, he said: “At present, rail connectivity between Hubballi and Varanasi and Hubballi and Jabalpur is very limited and through two changeover points.
This train will ease these difficulties. In addition, the new train will serve the people of Vijayapura and Gadag region by connecting Hubballi/Solapur with suitable timings.”
Mr. Pralhad Joshi termed it a historic occasion as two new trains from the same place were being flagged off at the same time time.
He said that the direct train to Varanasi was a long-pending demand and that he was happy that now it had been fulfilled.
Mr. Prasad Abbayya and Mr. Chavan spoke on the need to further improve rail services from Hubballi.
Divisional Railway Manager of Hubballi Division A.K. Jain and other officials were present.

MUMBAI: Less than 24 hours after its inaugural run, the luxury premium train Tejas Express is booked beyond capacity. There was already a waiting list — 43 in chair car and five in executive class — for the train leaving on Wednesday morning. Seats for Friday and Saturday were also "unavailable" as they were sold out within seconds, officials said. The train was flagged off by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday afternoon and will leave CST at its regular departure time of 5am from Wednesday . It will have halts at Dadar, Thane and Panvel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. "Not a single seat is available for this week till Saturday ," a senior official said, adding, "There is a demand for executive class . In fact, there is already a waiting list for this class for next month's dates like June 3 and 9. Citizens are fascinated by...

the new train and want to experience the luxury features which are a notch higher than even the Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains," he said. Tejas, which boasts of a maximum speed of 200 kmph, will, however, have speed restrictions en route and will reach Goa in eight and a half hours (by 1.30 pm). It's average speed is 65 kmph, sources said. As of now, the fastest train on the Mumbai-Goa route is the Jan Shatabdi which takes 8 hours, 40 minutes to cover the distance from Dadar to Madgaon (see graphic). The earliest date when seats are available on Tejas is May 28 (Sunday) when the executive class has wait-listed tickets, but 103 seats are available in AC chair car. On May 30, 522 seats are available in chair car while executive is again on waiting list. The train has a seating capacity of 990 seats. Said a Central Railway official, "The inaugural run for Tejas had nearly 50% bookings and this too was very encouraging. The response for this train is tremendous, and we expect it to go packed during monsoon." According to CR general manager D K Sharma, tourists would find it better to travel by Tejas Express than by air. "You can start your journey from Mumbai early morning (5 am) and the route passes through the most beautiful landscapes which you can enjoy along with a host of commuter-friendly features provided in the train. Your vacation begins the moment you step inside the train. It will give you a `wow' feeling."
