Development of 5500 hp diesel loco is a great achievement and has immense utility, especially keeping in view the adoption of higher axle load for freight trains and the longer (26coach)/ speedier express trains (160kmph) planned in near future. But the recent decision of electrifying 24000 kms in next 6 years have made this development not so useful.
It will still be very useful. Despite the proposed electrification, diesel traction is slowly becoming the traction of choice for many freight operations, particularly the EMD series. The new WDG5 series will be at the helm of the freight haulage along with the other EMD's!
