New rail routes need to be laid, say many passengers
Citizens of Thoothukudi have been looking forward to the upgradation of the existing Thoothukudi railway station into a junction with the laying of new tracks.
Thoothukudi, despite being a port city and a hub of industrial activity, is lagging behind other cities in terms of railway network.

a ‘modern terminus’ with enhanced infrastructure, new rail routes need to be laid and connected through Milavittan, many passengers felt.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, R. Edwin Samuel, former chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, Thoothukudi, mooted the idea of creating a pilgrimage circuit by establishing a new rail route from Kanniyakumari to Rameswaram via Tiruchendur and Thoothukudi.
Tourists hit
Currently, there was no rail connectivity for a tourist to reach Rameswaram from Kanniyakumari easily.
“If this facility is established, tourism would boom and create much- needed jobs for youths,” he said. He opined that the new rail route could be made alongside the East Coast Road to link these places.
M. Piramanayagam, secretary, Thoothukudi District Passengers’ Welfare Association, said passengers would be delighted if this idea was worked out by the railway authorities.
“With Tiruchendur situated just 40 kilometres away from Thoothukudi a rail route could be created,” he said. He also recalled that seven years ago, a field survey was carried out to have a rail route from Kanniyakumari to Rameswaram via Tiruchendur and Thoothukudi.
