the Andhra Pradesh government feeling further battered when the two-day rail blockade called by the Telangana joint action committee (JAC) begins on Saturday. The indefinite strike has brought things to a virtual standstill in the region with essential services such as public transport, coal production, power supply and medical services coming to a grinding halt in the past 11 days. Fearing any untoward incident, the south central railways have cancelled almost all express and passenger trains passing through the region, besides diverting several other trains for the next two days. In all, 642 trains, including 55 express trains, 176 passenger trains and 222 MMTS (multimodal transport system) services in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and 102 DHMU (diesel hydraulic multiple unit) trains in other parts of Telangana have been cancelled. Since the Kazipet junction in Warangal district is the nerve centre of the pan-Indian railway network, the rail blockade here is a sensitive matter. The heartland of the Telangana agitation is the hub of the northern, southern, eastern and western railway divisions. The trains heading towards Bangalore and Mumbai must pass through the restive Hyderabad and Secunderabad stations. Almost all the express trains connecting Hyderabad to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Howrah, Patna, Rajkot and Bhubaneshwar have been cancelled. Some of the important trains that were cancelled include New Delhi- bound Andhra Pradesh Express, Dakshin Express, Duronto Express, Rajadhani Express, Visakhapatnam- Nizamuddin Express, Hyderabad- Bangalore Express, Mumbai Express, Shirdi- Secunderabad Express and Hyderabad- Pune Express. Besides, 55 express trains and 28 passenger trains passing through Telangana have been partially cancelled and diverted. The rail blockade will further add to the woes of the people, who are already facing a tough time for the past five days after the 54,000- odd employees of the stateowned Road Transport Corporation ( RTC) went on strike. The situation is likely to exacerbate in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad following a two- day strike called by the auto rickshaw drivers from Friday midnight. The joint action committee of Osmania University students has also called for closure of all petrol bunks and liquor shops in the state capital on Saturday. Schools and colleges remained closed across the region on Friday as over 1.5 lakh teachers continued their strike. With employees of the state- owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited joining the agitation, power generation in Telangana has been severely affected. The region continues to face severe power cuts, ranging from two hours to eight hours in towns and villages. The indefinite strike turned violent on Friday as the Telangana activists targeted the camps of Telugu Desam Party ( TDP) leaders at several places. Tension prevailed in parts of Warangal, Karimnagar, Medak, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts as JAC activists tried to prevent TDP leaders from staging a daylong hunger strike demanding a separate Telangana state.
South Central Railway (SCR) cancelled over 72 express and 264 passenger trains originating from or coming to Telangana or passing through the region. "In view of some incidents that took place during similar protests earlier, we are not operating train services this time," said SCR chief public relations officer K. Sambasiva Rao. Leaders and activists of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) squatted on railway tracks at hundreds of places across the region. Leaders of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India-ML New Democracy squatted on the track at Kazipet in Warangal district, the main junction connecting south and north India. The railways have cancelled all 222 (Multi-Modal Transport System) services or local trains in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and 102 DHMU (Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Unit) trains in other parts of Telangana. The SCR authorities have also short terminated, diverted and rescheduled many long-distance trains in the north-south and east-west corridors. The rail link between Hyderabad and rest of Telangana and also between the state capital and other regions of Andhra Pradesh has completely snapped. All the trains between Hyderabad and destinations like like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Patna, Rajkot and Balharshah have been cancelled. Hundreds of policemen, personnel of railway police and central paramilitary forces were deployed at stations to protect railway property. Secunderabad and Nampally (Hyderabad) railway stations -- two of the busiest railway stations in south India -- wore a deserted look. All the trains were cancelled from Friday midnight while some long-distance trains coming to Hyderabad were stopped earlier in the day.

general strike in support of separate statehood demand. TRS and the Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC), which is organising the 'sakala janula samme' (strike by all sections of people) since September 13, have made elaborate arrangements to make the agitation a grand success, TRS said in a release. A number of trains have been cancelled, diverted or regulated in view of the 48-hour 'rail roko'. Many South-bound trains move via Telangana region to reach their destinations. As part of the general strike, the Telangana supporters today held rallies, fasts and other forms of protest across the region.Schools, colleges and other educational institutions remained closed and the buses of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) continued to be suspended. The plan of Telugu Desam leaders to hold fasts went awry as TRS and other Telangana supporters tried to obstruct them. Clashes took place between TDP activists and workers of TRS and others at some places in the process. The TRS and others allege that the TDP does not have a clear stand on separate statehood demand and that the party president N Chandrababu Naidu is a hurdle in the formation of separate Telangana. Congress Rajya Sabha member K Keshav Rao and other ruling party leaders expressed solidarity with pro-Telangana teachers at a protest. Speaking on the occasion, Keshav Rao highlighted the need to secure separate Telangana.
