This was the fourth suicide attempt in last fortnight, foiled by alert Metro Railway staff. The man, in his early 30s, has been admitted to MR Bangur Hospital with head and ankle injuries. Around 9.41am on Friday, when a Dum Dum-bound train was entering the Kavi Nazrul station, Parimal Saha - a resident of Taltala in Garia - jumped on the tracks. Motorman Ramesh Chandra Mantri applied emergency brakes and brought the train to a halt. Though Saha was hit by the train, the injuries were minor. Mantri and station in-charge Shyamal Roy pulled up Saha from the tracks and provided him with first-aid. were maintained between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Dum Dum stations. It was Mantri's efforts, that the man could be saved. Saha was at the middle of the platform when he jumped on the tracks. The average speed of a train in between stations is nearly 55km per hour. A train requires 50 metres to come to a complete stop if emergency brakes are applied at 55km per hour. A motorman starts controlling the speed when the train starts approaching the platform. By the time the train reached the middle of a platform, the speed was considerably checked and when the emergency brakes were applied, the train came to a halt at a very short distance from Saha. As a result, the impact was not severe," a Metro official said.
