Amid attempts of reconciliation by the BJP with its former ally Shiv Sena ahead of the winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu here met Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at the latter’s residence.
Prabhu, who broke his 18-year-old ties with Shiv Sena to join BJP before being sworn in as a union minister on November 9, met Thackeray to “clear out differences” between them on Friday night.
“Prabhu is an old colleague of ours. Now that he is also a railway minister, many things were discussed between him and Uddhav ji regarding development of Mumbai and Maharashtra.
Also, if there are misunderstandings between two people due to any reason, it gets cleared when they meet. Knowing Uddhav ji’s nature from

a very long time, he will not keep any grudges against anybody,” Rajya Sabha MP and senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, informed.
The meeting between the two leaders holds significance as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had last week said that doors for Shiv Sena to join the government still remain open before the winter session begins on December 8.
Talks of a revival of friendship between the 25-year-old allies had gained momentum after NCP Chief Sharad Pawar had asked his party workers to be ready for snap polls, asserting that a stable government in the state was not NCP’s responsibility.
“We have to be ready to face snap polls in the state. Having a stable government in Maharashtra isn’t NCP’s responsibility,” Pawar had said, adding that his part was neutral during the trust vote.

NEW DELHI: Looking to give a new impetus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat mission, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has suggested that officers working with the public transporter could adopt one railway station each in order to ensure proper cleanliness on the premises.
Noting that "in Railways, cleaning is nobody's baby", Prabhu has also advocated banning of cooking and shifting out of commercial stalls, including eateries, from the platforms to keep railway stations clean and safe.
According to the plan, about 700 stations are being identified to be taken up by individual officers for cleaning from next month.
"In Railways, cleaning is nobody's baby. Constant tussle between medical, commercial and engineering branches on not owning the cleaning job," Prabhu said in a

note sent to the Chairman, Railway Board, and other officials concerned.
"Railways has almost as many officers (group A and B) as it has railway stations. It may be a good idea if an officer adopts a station for cleaning purposes," he added in the note.
Although there are about 7,500 stations in the country, the number of those being chosen for cleaning is about 700 only.
"The stations being chosen are the ones where train movement is significant," said a senior rail ministry official.
The cleanliness drive was taken up by railways on October 2 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The then Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda himself had picked up the broom at New Delhi station as part of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan.
However, the drive appears to have lost steam and the new rail minister is keen to relaunch it in a dedicated way.
With a view to take the drive forward, Prabhu has also sought a ban on cooking on platforms along with the shifting out of stalls and eateries.
While cooking on platforms is one of the factors which contribute to uncleanliness, it is also considered to be a safety hazard.

China has launched an 82-wagon cargo train that will take 21 days to travel 6,200 miles and pass through six other countries as it moves goods from the industrial city of Yiwu to the Spanish capital, Madrid marking the longest route taken by a freight train.According to Washington Post, on November 18, the freight train left the eastern Chinese industrial city of Yiwu. The train route is longer than Russia's famed Trans-Siberian Railway. Yiwu is the largest wholesale center for small consumer goods in China. Now the city is plugged into a larger project with the freight train. The Yiwu-Madrid line is one of a series of routes unveiled following Beijing's new effort to revitalize intercontinental land trade.

NEW DELHI: In a bid to take members of Parliament (MPs) on board, railway minister Suresh Prabhu would meet parliamentarians to discuss the progress of rail projects under implementation in their constituencies. The meet is aimed at ensuring speedy implementation as the state-run transporter is struggling with huge pendency of projects.Prabhu, along with minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha, will meet all MPs in seven batches over dinner during the winter session of the Parliament session. An official in railway board secretariat said Sinha has directed the board to submit the details of ongoing projects and other works across 17 zones. The railways have landed in a financial mess due to the long list of non-remunerative projects. As per railway data, around 406 projects for constructing 43,982 km of tracks at a cost of Rs 1.85 lakh crore have been pending — some for over three decades. Soon after taking charge,...

the BJP government had issued instructions to general managers, asking them to draw up a priority list on pending projects, while indicating certain projects could be scrapped.
The meeting is also seen as railway minister's attempt to reach out to MPs before preparation of the rail budget. Railways are flooded with requests from parliamentarians on new trains, laying of new tracks and stoppage of trains at particular stations in their constituencies among other things.
The move is also seen as an attempt to take MPs into confidence before infusing radical reforms which could be politically unpopular and make them partner in revival of the state-run transporter, an official said.

DHARWAD/CHENNAI: A team of officers from Crime Branch CID in Chennai and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Mumbai on Saturday visited Dharwad in connection with the May 1 twin explosions at Chennai Central railway station. The local police were reportedly not kept in the loop.
Sources said the team went to the Karnataka town based on information that three young men with possible links to the May 1 blasts had stayed at Arogya Nagar in Dharwad's Tejaswi Nagar area. The team searched cybercafes and STD booths reportedly used by the men.
Police said the three approached Shivaji Kulkarni, owner of a house in Tejaswi Nagar, and said they wanted a portion for rent. Calling themselves Arvind, Anand and Kishan, they told him they were merchants from Uttar Pradesh.

They would remain indoors all day and visit the cybercafe and the STD booth at night. They are believed to have made international calls and sent emails to people abroad, police said after inquiries. A group of persons from Hyderabad frequently called on the trio at their house, sources said. They vacated the house in May.
Meanwhile, investigators probing the twin blasts have sought central agencies' help to nab the six Students Islamic Movement of India (Simi) activists thought to be involved.
The activists Amjad, Aslam, Zakir and Mehboob of Khandwa, Ejazuddin of Kareli and Abu Faizal of Juhu, who escaped from a prison in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, on September 30, 2013, are thought to be holed up in areas close to the India-Pakistan border.
