From next week, you can hop in an empty local at Shivajinagar station itself. With the successful installation of train reversing facility at Shivajinagar, the Central Railway (CR) from next week will run local trains between Lonavla and Shivajinagar stations to take the load off Pune.
"There are 21 pairs of trains between Pune and Lonavla. Of them, a few will be terminated at Shivajinagar. We are working out the details,'' CR's chief spokesperson Vidyadhar Malegaonkar told DNA.
He said all necessary approvals were in place and that a new timetable would come in force by the weekend.

Trains on Lonavla-Pune route have been recently converted into alternating current (AC) traction, which has helped the railways to save power and enable them to increase the speed of the trains. The new Siemens run trains procured under the Rs4,500 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project were internally retrofitted by the railways locally run on the section.
