Recognising better town planning and public transportation as the need of the hour, Speaker of the AP Legislative Assembly, Nadendla Manohar on Saturday said that with increasing urbanisation in the country, the cities should be made more ‘livable’.Speaking on the occasion of the south zone conference 2012 of the Institute of Town Planning India (ITPI), he emphasized on the focused development of the cities, which he termed as the economic powerhouses of the ‘emerging superpower’.Housing and Transportation are the two sectors where he urged the government to lay emphasis on. “As nearly 30% of the country’s population now live in the cities, better housing for them should be an utmost priority.” Terming the upcoming metro rail project as a ‘boon’ for Hyderabad, he said that it will help in reducing traffic congestions to a great extent. present at the event was the municipal administration minister M Maheedhar Reddy, who pointed out that it was important to rectify the mistakes of the previous master plans even though it was not advisable to make any changes once approved. “Whether we can implement at least 20% of our plans is a million dollar question. With rapid urbanisation, even plans made for the next 25 years need to be rectified to serve the proposed purpose,” he said.
