Bellandur to Hebbal in 35 minutes, at a cost of `10. No way? Way! That is if you are like around 2,000 city folk who have said goodbye to traffic jams and the pain (physical and otherwise) of travelling 30-35 kms a day (one-way) to and from work. And they have managed to do this by junking their carsbikes and jumping on to a train instead.
While many debates have been held off late about the proposed measures being taken by the government to ease traffic congestion in the city, a quiet few have made the switch to traveling on outstation trains that stop at railway stations across the city. Bengaluru does not have a local train network like Mumbai or Chennai,

which is why many people don't even know that there are railway stations in, say , Whitefield and Bellandur, where one can catch a train to go across the city to destinations like Hebbal and Lottegollahalli. For six years, techie Suhas Narayanamurthy was travelling from his home in Yelahanka to his offices in Electronics City, Whitefield and Bellandur on his two-wheeler. As a result, he was bed-ridden after suffering a slipped disc due to the long-distance travel on his scooter. Suhas was aware of a train station near his house, and 23 months ago, in an attempt to find an alternative mode of travel, he thought about checking if there was one near his office at RMZ Ecoworld in Bellandur. “To my surprise, I found that there are two stations close to my office -Carmelaram Railway Station and Bellandur Road Railway Station.I tried taking the train to work one day , and have been doing so since. My travel time has reduced drastically , and I come back home fresh and have more time to spend with my family . I am also saving a lot of money ,“ says Suhas.
After realizing the benefits of travelling by train, Suhas started the social media page Namma City Express to spread awareness among city folk who can benefit from the train service. Word spread quickly as people shared the information on the page; it has so far been shared with two lakh people across the globe.
Manju Janarthanan, a lead consultant who works at ITC Infotech, travels from Carmelaram Railway Station to Banaswadi Railway Station and back every day .And she covers this distance in a span of 20 minutes.Manju has not only been reaping the physical and psychological benefits of not travelling by road, but switching to train travel has also helped her retain her job.“Travelling to work used to take 1.15 hours by bike, and two hours by car and bus (one is required to change two buses). I have a young child, and I was thinking about quitting my job because of the distance. I discussed this with a colleague, who asked me to try travelling by train instead. It turned out to be a life-saving option and has helped me retain my job. The trains are not always on time, but there are around 1,900 people who give real-time updates of where each train is via the Trainspotters group on Telegram. This way , not just me, but many other women have benefited from travelling by train,“ she says.
Many people also club Metro and train travel, as the Baiyappanahalli Metro Station is a short walk from the Baiyappanahalli Railway Station.
Although travelling by train has eased stress and reduced travel time considerably , a common complaint is the frequency of the trains.Chaitra Ramesh, an analyst, who lives in Yelahanaka and works at RMZ Ecoworld, takes a train from Hebbal Railway Station to Bellandur Railway Station -a journey that takes 20-25 minutes and costs `10 -only when she is in the general shift, as the timings are not feasible when she works in the US shift. To tackle this issue, Suhas has been in touch with Gopinath, s senior divisional opera tionals manager, South Western Railways, who is also in charge of the s timetable for trains, and , Sanjay Agarwal, the division al railway manager. To making travel to and from the stations easier, T Prabhakar, former KSRTC chairman, is helping arrange a BMTC bus shuttle service from the rail way stations to tech parks, and vice versa. These buses will not ply on the main roads, but will approach the tech parks from the back gates.
