NH too face land acquisitions like railways and are not completed in time. They too take 1-2 yrs for land acquisitions and project competition takes 36-48 months though the stipulated time is 30months after handing over land. Total project will take 60 months and cost overruns.

Random alignment? The 4 lane and 6 lane roads eliminate as many curves as possible, hence travel at 100Kmph or more is possible. The ghat sections too are eliminated as much as possible. They too have stringent standards to adhere to. There is lot more agitations during land acquisition for NHs than railways.

My mistake, 'random' was probably not a very good choice of words here. :)
I meant that the engineering restrictions for roads and road vehicles are somewhat more relaxed than that of train routes. Curves can be banked, and larger gradients can be dealt with more effectively than that of a railway track where no such flexibility exists. Roads can be banked to higher angles, and can deal with much larger gradients easily while still maintaining the high speed requirements. So, minor realignments etc are technically as problematic for roads as they are for rails.

My comments were mostly about the engineering aspects only. It's not by any means a conclusive statement.
