Shops closed, vehicles keepoff roads
The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) to protest against the Central government’s demonetisation drew near total response in Kannur on Monday.
The hartal passed off peacefully, even as it affected normal life of the people here. Shops were all closed in response to the hartal call and vehicles were off the roads, except some two-wheelers and private cars.

remained open as they were exempted from the hartal.
No untoward incidents in connection with hartal were reported from any parts of the district, the police said. Train passengers who reached the railway station here were stranded because of the hartal.
LDF workers took out a demonstration in the town in support of the hartal. The demonstration was led by CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan and CPI district secretary P. Santhosh, among others.
Congress workers also staged protests near the Gandhi statue at the Gandhi Circle here in the morning. Party workers led by District Congress president K. Surendran and party leader Satheeshan Pacheni lay on the ground in protest against demonetisation.
