Humsafar Express, Indian Railways’ new train aimed at giving common man a taste of ‘luxury’ at affordable rates, was flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu via video conferencing. The Gorakhpur to Anand Vihar train is an all AC-3 tier service, that has a host of new features for passengers. The fares of Humsafar Express are higher than a normal AC-3 tier train. In line with Indian Railways’ move of introducing dynamic fares system on Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi and Duronto, the Humsafar Express will also charge passengers based on the availability of seats.

According to reports, 50% of the tickets will be made available to passengers on 1.15% higher base fare. After that, for every 10% tickets sold, there will be a 10% increase in fares. Currently, the base fare of a normal Mail/Express AC-3 tier is Rs 960. This means that at a 1.15% higher rate, the base fare of Humsafar Express would become, Rs 1104. This would be applicable for the first 50% seats. Thereafter, the base fare will go up to Rs 1214, an increase of 10% and so on. The highest fare would settle at Rs 1656, which amounts to an increase of 1.5% from the base fare for the last 10% berths.
The exterior of the train has an attractive new look and feel. The vinyl coating on the outside of the train is anti-graffiti in nature. The train will have an optional service for meals. The seats in Humsafar Express have also been given a colourful look and are said to be more comfortable. The interior of the train also has anti-graffiti gel-coated wall and roof panels.
Railways has provided laptop and mobile charging points next to each column of berths. Additionally, to maintain cleanliness in coaches, each cabin has a dustbin. The mirror between the berths is unbreakable. Apart from that, the seat number stickers are braille integrated. The train has sleek new bottle holders next to the seat. Each coach has 6 CCTV cameras and a total of 14 smoke and heat detection systems. The CCTVs have been fitted on the aisle roof and in the pantry area so as to make sure that the privacy of passengers is not compromised on.
Each coach has three odour control systems fitted across the aisle. There is a fire announcement system in each coach and the seat-number stickers are braille-integrated. The berths also have sleek bottle holders. Humsafar Express also boasts of GPS (Global Positional System)-based passenger information systems at each end of the coach. These systems display real-time information about the train’s exact location, and the distance from the next station.
Each coach of the Humsafar Express boasts of a mini-pantry. Railways has installed a coffee/tea/soup vending machine of the IRCTC, which we feel is a great feature aimed at making your train journey better. Just below the coffee vending machine is the area where trays are stored to keep the food hot. There is also a refrigerator to preserve food items.
Humsafar Express has modern toilets with plush interiors. New soap dispensers have been fitted and the odour control system is connected to the toilet’s flush button. Each time you press the flush button, the odour control system releases a perfume. In line with Indian Railways vision to keep tracks defecation free, the coaches have been fitted with bio-toilets.
While 10 smoke detection systems are installed in the coach aisle and pantry areas, 1 heat detector is fitted in each toilet of the coach. Additionally, toilet occupation indicators (WC seen in the image) have been fitted at the end of each coach.
The all AC-3 tier train was announced as part of Railway Budget 2016. The other new services and trains that were announced are; Deen Dayalu coaches, Antyodaya Express, Tejas and UDAY.
