A wagon maintenance workshop with periodic overhauls is of much more value and will provide more direct and indirect employment and needed an approximate investment of about Rs. 280 crore.
This was what would ultimately come up in Kazipet once the Telangana Government allotted the land required, said General Manager, South Central Railway, Ravindra Gupta, who has been elevated to the Railway Board as Member-Rolling Stock. A proposal to this effect has already been approved, he said. “We have enough units to manufacture wagons and it is a fact that there is lot of unused capacity. What we need are more facilities for wagon maintenance with extensive periodic overhaul equipment. This is a win-win situation for the Zone and the locals too.

Once we get the land, the Rail Vikas Nigam will finish the project within 30 months,” he pointed out, optimistically.
“When I move to New Delhi in a day, I would have completed 13 months and 10 days to be precise, as GM-SCR. Safety, improved services, faster running of trains, continuous monitoring of tracks to avoid unsafe conditions and focus on infrastructure are what kept me busy,” he told The Hindu on Tuesday. Safety did not mean just ensuring that coaches and freight wagons were maintained well and the bulk of the job involved constant monitoring of the tracks to quickly identify unsafe conditions, Mr. Gupta said, adding that the Railways had strong systems in place for this purpose. “Zero tolerance is the buzz word. We offer rewards to alert staff who help identify such situations,” he explained.
The South Central Railway ranked high across the Indian Railways compared to many other Zones, he said, and pointed out at a poster that outlined how the Zone got six All India Performance Efficiency Shields in the fields of commercial, civil engineering, comprehensive healthcare, safety, environment management and stores.
Another significant achievement that the Zone claims is rationalising the running of some express trains and significantly cutting down the time. Examples include the Sabari express (55 minutes), Garib Rath to Yeshwantpur (105 minutes), Telangana Express and Falaknuma Express too. “Board approvals are expected and soon they will be implemented,” he said.
As for punctuality, South Central Zone boasts of a whopping 98 per cent last year and for this year, the cumulative is 97 per cent, he said, summing up.
