COIMBATORE: Nilgiris Mountain Rail services between Mettupalayam and Coonoor have been suspended for a few days after a landslide occurred between Kallar and Hillgrove. The Nilgiris region has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Wednesday night.
The train that departs from Mettupalayam every day departed as per schedule at 7.10am on Thursday. However, it was stopped at Kallar in less than half an hour. The loco pilot was informed that there was a massive landslide on the track just ahead and the train was made to return to Mettupalayam. Massive boulders were found across the track.

"The landslide seems to have been severe and there are massive boulders strewn between Hillgrove, around 17 km from Mettupalayam, and Kallar," said the Salem division spokesperson. "Many of the boulders are literally across the track and there is also a lot of mud and trees deposited in the region," he said.
Work on clearing the damage began on Thursday. "Though our officers have begun work on clearing the track, there is need for mechanical equipment to lift and move the boulders. The solidified mud also needs to be dug out and cleared. This is likely to take at least two days," said the spokesperson. "We are hoping to clear the damage by Saturday afternoon, so services can resume by Sunday," he said.
However, train services between Coonoor and Ooty are running.
