UDAIPUR: In a bid to promote cashless transactions, North Western Railway (NWR) has introduced Point-of-Sale (PoS) machines for passenger reservation system (PRS) counters at 10 railway stations.Minister of State (I/C) for communication and Minister of State for railways Manoj Sinha inaugurated the first POS device at PRS counter at Udaipur railway station on Monday. The facility was simultaneously launched in Ajmer railway station which is the only A-1 category station under Ajmer division along with 'A' type stations at Abu Road, Bhilwara, Falna, Rani, Marwar and three 'B' type stations including Mavli, Beawar and Vijaynagar."In the second phase, POS facility will be extended to unreserved counters and parcel and goods sections," Punit Chavla, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ajmer, said. "We will be organizing seminars for vendors and passengers to make them aware of the cashless facility. This will also improve Digital Literacy & will help in financial inclusion for the people of Udaipur city," Chawla said. On the occasion, the railway minister also inaugurated 'Wi-Fi' facility at Udaipur railway station. The facility has been commissioned by Ajmer division in association with RailTel and Google.
Udaipur is the third city after Jaipur & Ajmer to be a Wi-Fi enabled station. Eighteen Access points, 10 Access Switches, 03 Fibre Switches & 3 Fibre Racks have been provided, with each Access Point having the capacity to connect 70 passengers. Udaipur station deals about 14,000 passengers daily (inwards & outwards) and around 51, 10,000 passengers would be benefitted in a year. "A total bandwidth of 1 GB has been provided. The facility would be launched at Bhilwara, Marwar Jn., Rani, Falna and Abu Road stations of Ajmer division in near future. A water vending machine was also inaugurated on the occasion. Passengers would get RO water at a low cost of Rs 5 per liter or Rs 1 per glass.
This would also reduce the use of plastic bottles at station premises and create a greener and cleaner environment, railway officials said.
