Only 250 left for Guwahati on Saturday: Home minister
Home minister R Ashoka on Saturday maintained that fear among people from North-East in the city has diminished and fewer persons were boarding trains for Guwahati. He told reporters that on Saturday, only 250 persons from North-East left the city. The two special trains, scheduled to leave for Guwahati, were cancelled for want of passengers, he added. A special train can be run only if there are 3,000 passengers, he said. Most of the passengers who boarded the train on Saturday had come from places outside Bangalore. As on date, about 25,000 people have left for Guwahati, Ashoka said. The home minister said the police have made arrests regarding threatening people from North-Eastern states. fled the city following rumours and some stray incidents of violence. Meanwhile, as the exodus still continues, there is also a steady stream of VIPs to the City Railway Station, trying to dissuade them from leaving the city.
On Saturday, it was the turn of Union minister of state for Railways KH Muniyappa, who tried to persuade them against leaving the city.
The minister said that about 30,000 Northeast people have left the city to their respective hometowns in the last three days. He appealed to the media to convey the message to fleeing Northeasterners that the city is safe.
The minister pointed out that among those fleeing the city, many were students. "It will affect their studies and make it difficult for them to write examinations, if they remain absent for many days," he said.
SWR had arranged eight special trains, apart from three regular ones, in the last three days to clear the rush. "The SWR had to cancel five Hindupur-bound trains, two Shravanbelagola, two Nagor and two Hubli-bound trains to provide special train services to Guwahati. More than 151 coaches were attached to the special trains and among them 10 new coaches supplied by the BEML," the minister said.
Stating that all efforts were being made to maintain peace in Assam, he said the state government had taken measures to arrest people responsible for spreading rumours and violence in Assam.
The minister also praised the Karnataka government for taking effective measures to maintain law and order. "I came to know two ministers-Suresh Kumar and R Ashoka-have been in touch with the Northeastern people and tried their best to convince them not to leave Bangalore. I want those who have already left the city to come back as early as possible," he said.
Asked if there were any more special trains bound for Guwahati, Muniyappa said the railways did not want to encourage exodus.
