A daytime express train between Rameswaram and Chennai — a long-pending demand of people in these parts — must be introduced, said the district unit of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Association at its 12th district conference here on Saturday.
Highlighting a charter of demands, its district president M. Karunanidhi led a rally.
He urged the government to build quarters for government employees at the district headquarters and in Paramakudi and implement underground sewage system in Paramakudi.

out that Ramanathapuram was the only district in the State which had no housing facilities for government employees after the existing more than 30-year-old quarters were declared unsafe for dwelling, the association urged the State housing board to demolish the disused structures and build new quarters.
The demand for the daytime express to Chennai with refrigerator facility for transporting fish was initially made by former President APJ Abdul Kalam who wanted the train to be named Pamban Express. As the daytime train would be beneficial to the fisherfolk and a wide section of general public, the railways should consider the demand, the association said.
Vacancies
Through another resolution, the association pointed that there were more than two lakh vacancies in various departments and urged the State government to fill them at the earliest.
It also reiterated its demand for scrapping the new pension scheme and constituting the Eighth Pay Commission at the earliest.
It also demanded standard time pay scale for noon meal and Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) employees.
The association’s State general secretary, R. Balasubramanian, and vice-president M. Meiyyappan took part in the deliberations.
Outgoing district secretary S. Ganesamoorthy said 11 office- bearers for the district unit were elected. P. Sekar, Deputy Tahsildar, Paramakudi, replaced him as district secretary and N. Revathy, noon meal organiser, replaced outgoing joint secretary T. Murugesan, he said.
