In what comes as a relief for railway commuters, Panvel in Navi Mumbai and Parel in central Mumbai are set to become major railway terminals in the next three years. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Monday flagged off the project to turn Panvel into a terminal for long-distance trains and Parel into a suburban terminus.
Once completed, Panvel will become Navi Mumbai’s first rail terminus, allowing commuters to board several outstation trains at Panvel itself without having to travel to the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) or other terminals. Under the project, three platforms would also be constructed. A dedicated line will be laid from Panvel to Kalamboli to move coaches to a maintenance depot that will come

up at the Panvel terminal.
“The coaching complex will allow for construction of four washing lines and a stabling line along with other coach maintenance facilities at Kalamboli,” said Narendra Patil, chief PRO, Central Railway.
