Railways are on the final lap of track electrification work on the 90-km Cheruvathur-Mangaluru stretch. It is expected to operationalise electric locomotives on the busy route by February next.
Having completed the track electrification work at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, Railways now were engaged in giving finishing touches to the busy yards taking care to see that no train operations are affected by the ongoing work, railway sources told The Hindu here on Monday.
While laying of high-tension cables to the feeder electric substation at Elathur, near Kozhikode, was completed, Railways were
awaiting clearance certification from the Chennai regional office of the power and telecommunication coordination committee and the approval was expected any time, they said. The work on the feeder substation at Cheruvathur is moving at a fast pace and 60 per cent equipment installation has been completed, they said. Similarly, the work on the proposed trip shed at Mangaluru Junction to carry out emergency locomotive maintenance is progressing as per schedule.
The Railway Board had set January-end as the electrification work deadline and electric locomotives would haul 70 per cent passenger and freight traffic on the 307-km Shoranur-Mangaluru stretch once the Chief Railway Safety Commissioner gives approval by February, the sources added.
