Two persons died and hundreds were rendered homeless after a fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at a slum near in Patipukur area on the northern fringes of the city. The deceased were identified as Priya Adhikari (15) and Nemai Adhikari (27).
According to police, the fire broke out at about 2.30 am on Saturday in Subhash colony slum in Patipukur area and soon spread to nearby hutments.

Seventeen fire engines, along with fire brigade personnel and staff from the disaster management department, were rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control after almost two hours of firefighting.
“About 12 hutments were gutted although the cause of fire and the details of the extent of damage are yet to be ascertained,” police said.
Due to the slum’s close proximity to railway tracks, circular train services were suspended for about two hours.
Gas cylinder blast likely
Locals said there was a loud explosion, possibly due to a gas cylinder explosion, triggering a fire.
Meanwhile another fire broke out at a garment factory in North Kolkata. Even though no casualties were reported, the factory was badly damaged.
