NEW DELHI: The Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested most wanted gangster Sher Khan after an encounter at Mathura railway station around 4am on Tuesday. Four policemen were also hit by bullets, but they escaped unscathed as they were wearing bulletproof vests.
Khan was wanted in over a dozen cases of robbery, murder and abduction. Charged with the stringent MCOCA in 2013, the gangster had escaped from police custody in 2015 while being shifted from one jail to another. Apart from one case of kidnapping for ransom, the trigger-happy goon has two petrol pump robberies, 10 carjackings, two ATM robberies and six truck robberies to his credit. Of late, Khan had come under the radar of Delhi, UP and MP police forces.

Joint Commissioner (Special Cell) V Renganathan said that a reward of Rs 50,000 and Rs 15,000 had been declared on Khan's head by Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police, respectively.
Sleuths of the southern range got a tip-off that Khan would come to his native village in Mathura along with his associate Sahun. A team led by ACP Satyavir Singh and inspector Shiv Kumar laid a trap in Barsana with the help of the local police. Around 4am, the two criminals were intercepted while going towards Kosi Kalan on a bike without a numberplate.
"The two criminals opened fire at the police upon being surrounded. Sahun managed to escape, but Khan was nabbed. An automatic 9mm carbine with 20 live cartridges and a semi-automatic pistol of 7.65mm with nine live cartridges and a stolen Apache motorcycle have been seized from him," said DCP (Special Cell) P S Kushwah.
Khan told the police that he had returned to the village to kill the family of a rival gangster who had allegedly captured their land. The rival had also killed four of Sahun's family members.
An FIR under MCOCA was lodged against Khan and his aides for frequent robberies and attacks on policemen. Khan was a member of the dreaded Salli gang headed by Salli and his brother Zafru. He was arrested in 2008 in Nuh in eight cases of robbery. He got bail in 2010, but was arrested again in 2012 by Gurgaon police.
