Madurai railway junction remained cut off from the rest of the country’s rail network for the second day on Friday after students and youth seeking conduct of jallikattu started blocking trains and tracks on both sides of the railway junction on Virudhunagar-Dindigul section on Thursday.
With no rail movement on Dindigul-Madurai-Virudhunagar section, trains were diverted through Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai, Manamadurai, Karaikudi and Tiruchi.
Hundreds of students took turns to block the Coimbatore-Nagercoil train on the Vaigai bridge (north of railway station) and the Tiruchendur-Pollachi/Palani passenger on the southern tip of the railway junction on

Thursday.
All the passenger and express trains run from Madurai to various destinations were cancelled since then as the students did not allow shunting of rakes in the yard. Over 50 passengers stranded in the railway station were provided free food, a railway official said.
Madurai railway station, one of the busiest stations in the State, virtually wore a deserted look.
Apart from a few passengers and railway employees, a large number of students and their supporters were present in the station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Selvaraj tried to pacify the protesters and appealed to them to allow rail movement. However, the students stood their ground and refused to budge.
Passengers stranded
Passengers bound for Madurai from Chennai and other destinations had a tough time since Friday morning as the Southern Railway stopped the Madurai-bound Pandiyan Super Fast Express at the Dindigul railway junction here.
Railway officials stopped the train here when it reached the junction at 5.45 a.m.. Passengers going to Madurai reached Dindigul bus stand to board buses for their onward journey. The Pandiyan Express was sent back to Tiruchi at 10.05 a.m.
All south-bound trains from Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Mysuru were diverted through Tiruchi and Manamadurai to reach Virudhunagar and other destinations on Thursday night. The Guruvayur Express that reached Dindigul at around 3 p.m. on Thursday left around midnight and passed through Tiruchi, Manamadurai and Virudhunagar to reach Guruvayur. Similarly, Okha-Rameswaram Express and Kacheguda Express were diverted at Dindigul and Kodai Road.
Vaigai Express, which normally leaves from Madurai, was the only train that departed from Dindigul at 9.15 a.m. Railway officials followed it till it reached Tiruchi safely. The Madurai-bound Vaigai Express was stopped at Dindigul on Thursday night.
