An officer of the Government Railway Police said the fatalities had been registered as unnatural deaths under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
However, since the accident also involved footboard travel, a punishable offence under Section 156 of the Railways Act, 1989, an investigation would be conducted to see if any foul play was involved.
The four injured persons would be questioned once the doctors certify that they are fit, he added.

KOLKATA: On Thursday morning, when the lights in her Metro coach flickered and gave way to the emergency ones and the train slowed, Nandita Mitra feared it would be a repeat of what she went through three years ago, when the marketing executive was among 600-odd passengers trapped inside a train for more than an hour between Maidan and Park Street. Fortunately this time, though the train slowed, it didn't stop.
"I suffer from mild claustrophobia, but have to take the Metro. My job requires extensive travelling. Being a single parent, I can't afford cabs all the time and buses are out of the question. In 2014, I had nearly collapsed. Fortunately, nothing of that sort happened today," she said.
Thursday's

incident, which happened during peak office hours, was the first in Metro's recent history. The power supply from CESC collapsed at 9.53am, when trains were chock-a-block. "Winter's gone and it gets uncomfortable in the crowded non-AC coaches. There was also the tension everybody felt after lights went out," said Arkaprabha Roy, who commutes daily from Garia to Bhowanipore.
Metro Railway has four receiving sub-stations at Noapara, Shyambazar, Jatin Das Park and Central stations. Each of these has two feeds. According to Metro CPRO Indrani Banerjee, even if three sub-stations fail, operations can continue. "Never have all four failed simultaneously. Even after the Eastern Grid failed in 2012, our services continued. Fortunately, the approaches to all our stations, except Dum Dum and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, have slopes or are horizontal and the trains rolled in due to inertia. Pneumatic brakes were applied to stop them at the platforms. Power supply was restored at 10.08am," she said.

HYDERABAD: Passengers of the Manuguru-bound Kakatiya fast passenger left stranded for hours after the train overshot the red signal at the Jangaon station on Wednesday morning. The Secunderabad-Manuguru train was stranded for hours, resulting in many passengers reaching their destination late.
The train overshot the red signal, which is technically known as Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) at the station by 10 metres. The incident caused a huge alarm and the station master immediate halted the train. "A SPAD incident is considered a huge breach in safety even if the signal is breeched by a few metres, as the train carries scores of passengers and lack of alertness could result in heavy loss of life," a senior official said. While authorities

were following the protocol to deal with the issue, hundreds of passengers were left waiting for the train services to resume. Many irate passengers spent hours sitting in the train before erupting in anger over the delay. "I was accompanying my younger brother for an interview at Dornakal but instead of lending him some moral support, we both ended up in a stressful situation. He ultimately had to go on his own," said a passenger, Srikanth Pachirapally. Another passenger, Mohd.Sahil said, "We were unnecessarily held up for hours due to the incident. We should have been provided with alternative arrangements immediately after the incident so that we could have reached our destination quickly. After all it wasn't an accident." Officials however defended the delay saying the essential protocol had to be followed, before the train could be resumed."Such incidents are taken very seriously by the railways and there is a protocol to be followed in such cases. In case of such incidents, the station master alerts supervisors who have to go and measure the distance overshot. Also the loco pilot has to be questioned and other details are noted before the train can resume its onward journey," said M Umashankar Kumar, chief public relations officer, South Central Railway.
