Exhausted passengers of the Okha-Ernakulam Express train finally reached their destination, Ernakulam on Wednesday evening, 26 hours later than the scheduled arrival time.
Angry passengers say the train took a wrong route and they were forced to travel 700 km without basic amenities like food and water.
Their harrowing tale unfolded from Okha in Gujarat at 2am on Monday and it was expected to reach Ernakulam by Tuesday night. After a derailment of a goods train near Ratnagiri in Maharashtra, the train was diverted to Pune.
Passengers say instead of sending it to Goa route it was diverted to Gulburga, some 500 km away from Pune. When the train reached Sholapur passengers protested vehemently and railway officials admitted their folly. They were promised

refund at Gulburga and advised them to go back to Mangalore by road.
“An official even said since it was a weekly train it never gets any priority during busy traffic,” said Suresh, a passenger. Some passengers said they would move the consumer court against the railways. A senior Southern Railway official, who did not want to be named, said some goof up had taken place.

More than 50 people were injured when the Guwahati-bound 15666 BG Express from Dimapur (Nagaland) derailed at Aujuri near Jagiroad, 50 km east of Guwahati, early Wednesday. Railway traffic east of Guwahati was disrupted, with several long-distance trains including the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, being stranded at Lumding and other stations.
The incident occurred close to Aujuri station in Morigain district, around 2.15 am Wednesday, when the Guwahati-bound BG Express that had left Dimapur at around 9.30 pm Tuesday was 90 minutes away from its destination.
While ten coaches and the engine of the train jumped the rails, at least five coaches were partially submerged in water in the paddy field, injuring over 50 passengers, including women and children. Northeast Frontier Railway PRO Nripen Bhattacharyya said 19 of the injured were sent

Exhausted but relieved, numerous passengers of the Okha-Ernakulam express (train number 16337) arrived in the city here on Wednesday evening nearly 26 hours later than the scheduled arrival time.
The train, from Okha in Gujarat to Ernakulam in Kerala, started its trip at 2 a.m. on Monday and was expected to reach Mangalore at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday. After a derailment of a goods train near Ratnagiri in Maharasthra, the train was diverted to Pune. However, from Pune, instead of being sent towards the scheduled route towards Goa, the train was sent towards Gulbarga, some 500km away.
As the train chugged in at 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday, passengers – especially those headed towards Ernakulam – found little solace in the station announcements asking vendors to “attend on priority the needs of passengers

of the train”.
For them it was nearly three days with no information and very little facilities. “We suddenly found ourselves in Sholapur, and then for four hours near Gulbarga station, when we should have been closer to Mangalore… There was no ticket collector, no checker, no information given to us. We had to ask station managers to give us information,” said Bharat Kotian, who along with six of his colleagues from a factory in Jamnagar were headed home in Kuloor for the holidays. All of them missed the marriage they were supposed to attend.
At Gulbarga station, he said, many passengers took the refund and headed to Mangalore by bus. “We didn’t have the money and so we had to stay on,” said Mr. Kotian.
The train passed through Bijapur, Gadag, Hubli, before joining the Konkan track near Doodhsagar falls.
Swapnil W., from Surat who studies in a college in the city, said he missed a day of college because of the delay. “One boy travelling with us missed his examination he had to write in Goa,” he said. His friend, Atul Berry, said waiting in noon at Gulbarga was “the worst experience”, and soon, even the toilets ran out of water.
There was no sympathy from railway officials, said Pushparaj Shetty, a caterer in Baroda, who was going to visit his family in Padavinangady. “Food cost more than Rs. 60 per meal. Water was at Rs. 20. Why couldn’t they have at least lowered the rates to make it affordable?” he said.
While passengers who got off at Mangalore were relieved at the sight of Mangalore Junction, the others still harboured uncertainty over the remainder of the journey. S. Shekhar has missed his train from Shoranur Junction to Coimbatore. “They have assured me that they will put me on to some other train. But having seen all their other assurances fail, I can’t travel in peace now,” he said.
Rescheduled train
Due to the delayed schedule of the Ernakulam-Okha express (Train No.16338), Southern Railways has rescheduled the train to leave Earnakulam at 7.25 a.m. on Thursday, instead of 8.50 p.m. on Wednesday.

At least 19 passengers were injured, six of them seriously, when the engine and nine coaches of the Guwahati-bound Dimapur-Kamakhya Express derailed near Jaigroad in central Assam’s Morigaon district around 2-15 a.m. on Wednesday.

GULBARGA: Passengers of the Okha-Ernakulam express from Gujarat to Kerala were stunned when they saw that their train had reached Gulbarga station in Karnataka on Tuesday. It had been sent on the wrong route at Pune and landed at Gulbarga.
The train was on track till 10.30pm on Monday but passengers were alerted at Punwale that due to an accident near Ratnagiri, the train would be diverted towards Pune and then it would reach Wadgaum in Goa via Miraj. But at Pune, the train was mistakenly diverted to Solapur and then to Gulbarga.
Passengers were shocked early morning when they saw their train at Solapur station at 6am. They informed the station master at Solapur and were told the train would be diverted at Guntakal to Hubli.

Keerthan, a passenger on the train who was supposed to reach Udupi at 11am Tuesday, got down at Gulbarga and took a bus to reach his destination. He said almost 30 passengers in the bus he was travelling, were passengers from the misrouted train.
Another passenger Nagaraj said the situation was terrible in the train as there was not a single drop of water in all the toilets. "The train would stop outside the station at every place and we couldn't even buy bottled water," he said. Senior citizens and children had a tough time, he added. Nagaraj, an engineer in Surat, was headed to his home town Kundapur in Udupi district in Karnataka.
Many North Indians were travelling in the train. At Gulbarga station, the train was stopped 1km from the station. Later, the train was taken to the station where the station master announced refund of the ticket. For tickets booked online, the refund amount will be credited to the passengers' accounts.
The train reached Gulbarga at 11.30am and was parked 1km from the station and later taken to the station. The train was sent back to Pune and then to Wadgaum via Miraj. At 2.30pm, the train was sent back from Gulbarga to Pune.
