At least 57 people were killed when a passenger train sped off the rails in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the government said on Wednesday, raising an earlier death toll as difficult rescue operations continued in the remote, swampy area.
The newly purchased locomotive flew off the rails on Tuesday as it went around a bend in a swampy area in the southeast of the country, causing 15 of the train’s 19 cars to overturn, said the government’s spokesman and a journalist at the scene.
The official death toll was first given as 37. — AFP

Mercury levels in the city have reached a boiling point, so much so, that a railway track near Cotton Green station was found to have bent due to excessive heat on Wednesday. The incident led to a disruption of services between 2.20 pm to 3.25 pm.
The irregularity was sensed by motorman VK Gautam, who was driving a CSTbound train along the Harbour line.
"Gautam said that he felt a jerk and a clanking sound after the local he was driving passed over the affected part. He immediately alerted the control room, after which repair work was taken up and measures were taken to protect other oncoming trains," a senior official said.
"Tracks bend due to the expansion of rails, which happens because

of excessive heat. The services were regulated at a speed of 10 kmph for safety," Narendra Patil, central railway's chief spokesperson.
For the past few days, Mumbai has been boiling at 39 to 40°C. Sources said that during extremely hot days, the temperature of steel tracks can rise sharply, causing them to expand into wave-like shapes and affecting the normal gauge that crosses ties and ballasts. If undetected, this could lead to derailments.
"On such days, the metal rails are exposed to heat and continuously hammered by the wheels of the trains, leading to their expansion at the weakest spot in the track structure. What then happens, track bends in either direction," a track engineer said.

Thousands of passengers were stranded as a technical snag in the signalling system disrupted the operation of a dozen of trains at the Ghaziabad railway station this morning.
The snag was reported at 9.20 AM, resulting in the halt of the Howrah Rajdhani, Bhubaneswar Rajdhani, Sealdah Rajdhani, New Delhi-Bareilly Intercity Express, Ambala-Delhi Express and more than six local passenger trains on the tracks, said Government Railway Police.
"Signalling system stopped working due to non-supply of power at 9.20 AM, following which trains passing through Ghaziabad stopped on railway tracks for 40 minutes.
"A technical team of Railway was immediately sent to the spot and train services normalised at 10 AM," said a senior official with Railway.

Jhansi (JHS): A serious tragedy was averted due to timely rescue measures taken in Chennai-bound Andaman Express, which caught fire near Jhansi Railway Station in the early hours of Monday. The 20-bogie train coming from Jammu, had four parcel carriages just behind the engine. It arrived at 2.00 am at Jhansi Station. Some passengers smelt something burning from the parcel section but overlooked it because nothing was visible.
As the train started and moved further, the driver observed smoke coming out from a carriage. He halted the train near Bijauli station, 10 kilometres from Jhansi and raised an alarm. In the meantime, the fire got intensified. Railway officials and the safety squad reached the spot and managed to separate the two bogies from rest of the train.
By morning, heavy flames started

coming out from the two parcel carriages. The train had halted in a secluded place with a lot of vegetation and it became difficult for the fire brigade to reach the spot. Somehow six fire tenders, including those from Army and BHEL, reached there. The flames could be controlled after six hours.
Railway spokesman Ravi Prakash said that the reason of the fire and the estimated loss are being investigated.
In the meantime, over one dozen trains got affected and two passenger trains had to be cancelled. Andaman Express moved after seven hours of delay. Around 1,500 passengers got their tickets and reservations cancelled.

Pachhapur (PCH): A loco pilot’s presence of mind averted a major fire on the Miraj-Belgaum train at Pachhapur Railway Station, about 73 km from here, on Sunday.
According to sources in the Railways, the pilot of train no. 51461 applied brakes while approaching Pachhapur Railway Station.
He suddenly noticed smoke coming out of the braking system and realised that the axle had gotten stuck because of improper maintenance. The friction and heat caused thick smoke to emanate and this could have even caused a major fire, the sources said.
After the train was brought to a halt at the station, the train staff tried to contact the station master, but he was not available. They then went ahead and rectified the problem

under the guidance of the train pilot.
After the problem was solved, the train resumed its journey. There were about 500 people on board.
However, Railway authorities denied any such incident, but admitted that the Pachhapur station master was on leave and so, wasn’t available at the station.
