Hundreds of passengers of the 55753 Alipurduar-Guwahati Sifung Express had a providential escape early Saturday morning when the train hit a tree that had fallen on the tracks just before a railway bridge on the Guwahati-Alipurduar main line, with only the engine and five coaches getting derailed in the process.
The accident occurred at 5:15am after the Sifung Express had left Salakati station and was heading towards Basugaon in Kokrajhar district. Four persons including the driver and assistant driver received minor injuries. There would have been heavy casualties had the train or some of its coaches fallen off the bridge into the Champamati river.

While the Northeast Frontier Railway authorities have instituted an inquiry to ascertain the exact reason behind the derailment, local reports said that the train hit a simul tree that had fallen on the track after it was uprooted in a storm in the wee hours of Saturday.
While movement on the Up track has remained suspended with engineers getting to work to remove the blockade, repair the tracks and the bridge. Traffic between Guwahati and Alipurduar is now taking place only through the Down track.
“Because of the Up track remaining blocked due to the accident, normal movement of trains has been affected. Most of the trains will be running behind schedule due to the congestion,” NF Railways CPRO PJ Sharma said.

Suburban train services on Central Railway was thrown out of gear after a pantograph broke in Thane on Friday morning. As a consequence, lakhs of passengers suffered due to delays of up to two hours. Railways’ top board will now look into the frequent break-downs on Central Railway.
“Pantograph break-down of a CST-Thane slow local in Thane disrupted the suburban services on slow lines from 9.53am to 12.20pm on Friday. Slow services resumed from 12.30pm,” said a CR spokesperson.
The trains were being diverted between Vikhroli-Diva and Mulund-Diva as slow lines had got affected. However, the fast corridor was functioning, which had to accommodate the entire load on CR’s main line.
Repeated disruptions have led to railway minister Suresh Prabhu directing the Railway

Board “to send a team of officers to examine the problem of frequent electrical overhead equipment break-down and prepare a time-bound action plan to avoid recurrences of such incidents.” Due to this incident, a total of 50 locals were cancelled and six others were partially cancelled.
During morning rush hours people were walking on the rail lines and heading towards the nearest road transportation alternative. There were delays in train operations even during evening rush hours.
“Such disruptions have now become a norm but no permanent solution has come through. We commuters reach late to our offices only to get penalised with half-day salary,” said Priyanka V, a resident of Dombivli who was stuck during morning hours.

Mumbai: Nearly 50 suburban Central Railway (CR) services were cancelled after overhead equipment wire broke near Thane station on Friday .
Several trains were delayed by more than an hour due to the snag. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu directed the administration to send a team of officers to examine the problem of frequent breakdowns and prepare a time-bound plan to such recurrences on Mumbai's lifeline. It took almost two hours to restore the services. Although fast services in Up and Down directions were restored, the slow lines remained affected till the work was completed around 12.30pm.
“Suburban services on the fast line were running and slow trains were diverted between Vikhroli and Diva on the fast line. The cause of the incident is being investigated,“ said CR chief public relations officer Narendra

Due to the disruption, several daily commuters walked on the tracks to the nearest station in sultry weather to take alternative modes of transport. “Either a pantograph breaks down or an overhead wire snaps. These issues are so common that we don't bat an eyelid anymore when the railway announces that the trains will be delayed,“ said commuter Komal Dhotre (26). Passengers took to social media to slam the CR administration. “Is CR using threads instead of metallic wires,“ tweeted a commuter.“I had a job interview at 12.30pm in Thane. I left my home ahead of time so I could reach the office early, but because of the disruption I missed a chance,“ said Rajshree Mehta, a Dadar resident.

Govt planned to kill the movement'
Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla's charm over his community appears to have faded or his supporters were apparently tired of agitating for the quota demand year after year.It was evident from the strength of Gujjars that occupied the Delhi-Mumbai railway tracks at Pilukapura near Bayana on Friday . It was a pale shadow of their numbers that were witnessed during the quota agitations of 2007, 2008 and 2010. The Jaipur-Bharatpur national highway , which was blocked in all earlier agitations, remained free for traffic this time, suggesting that the Gujjars in the adjoining regions were not part of the agitation. Incidentally , the anniversary of the 2008 agitation in which 16 Gujjars were killed in police firing at Pilukapura alone falls on Saturday .
Bainsla and

his close aides publicly expressed anguish about the less number of protesters on Friday , while giving a day's ultimatum to the com munity men present on the tracks to increase their strength by Saturday .
Advocate Attar Singh, who is Bainsla's close aide and master strategist, asked the Gujjars, “Did you all not raise hands in support when Bainsla asked you yesterday (Thursday) if you wanted another agitation to get our demands fulfilled?“ The gathering chanted “yes“ in chorus.“Then where are the 5,000 men who were here yesterday ,“ Singh asked.
Community leaders addressed the protesters and appealed for increasing their numbers. Some leaders covertly said the state government was aware of the protesters' feeble numbers and, hence, merely sent a letter of `suggestions' for talks on Friday .
The leaders read out the government letter to the Gujjars present on the tracks.
Even the police did not go beyond Bayana this time even though the Gujjars occupied and damaged the railway tracks at Pilukapura around 10-12 km away . During the earlier agitations, there used to be heavy police presence from Bayana to Samogar, which is barely a km before Pilukapura on the Hindaun road. Un like previous agitations, this time there were no police check posts on the roads leading to Pilukapura.
Gujjar leaders said the government planned in advance to fail the agitation this time. Addressing the protesters, Rajasthan Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti spokesperson Himmat Singh said, “The government deliberately asked the high court for a July date to hear the SBC quota is sue, because it knew we would protest in May-June.“
Singh said Bainsla and he, along with other Gujjar leaders, met minister Rajendra Rathore on April 19 to demand attorney general's (AG) presence in high court to properly argue the SBC quota case. “Rathore made excuses about AG's inability to come and subsequently got the matter postponed for July 16,“ Singh said.

In less than 24 hours after the Gujjars occupied the railway tracks at Pilukapura near Bayana, their leaders looked eager to have talks with the state government for a peaceful resolution of the quota issue, on Friday. The dwindling number of the protestors -there were less than a thousand Gujjars at the tracks by Friday evening which was not even half their strength a day ago -forced the leaders to reconsider their strategy.
Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla, while addressing the community men on the railway tracks around 5 pm, said, “If by tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, I do not see at least 40,000 people here, I shall pack my bags and leave.“
He then attempted to persuade the small gathering squatting on the railway tracks to agree for talks with the government representatives.

The community men, though, insisted on simply sending a letter conveying the quota demand to the government just as the latter had done.
In the morning, the government sent the Gujjars a letter singed by principal secretary of the state social welfare and justice department “suggesting“ them to end the agitation and instead talk to the existing three-member ministerial committee looking into the Special Backward Classes (SBC) quota matter. Through the letter, the government also conveyed to the Gujjars that attorney general (Mukul Rohatgi) would be now arguing their case before the Rajasthan High Court.
The Gujjars led by Bainsla occupied the Delhi Mumbai railway tracks at Pilukapura on Thursday evening to demand 5% quota in government jobs and educational institutes for the SBC within the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. The government granted the quota to the SBC in 2008, but it was stayed by the Rajasthan High Court since it took the state's overall reservation to 54%. The matter was pending in court since then and the next date for its hearing was July 16. Former minister Hari Singh Mahuwa, addressing the Gujjars said, “The government says the matter is pending before the high court, but what did it do all this while to put forth our justified demand forcefully in the court. The government just got us dates.“
The Rajasthan Gujjar Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti spo kesperson Himmat Singh too addressed the gathering and said, “The matter was before the court when the BJP included it in its election manifestos in 2013 and 2014. Why it promised a constitutional solution then? The only constitutional solution is giving us the quota within the 50% limit.“ He added that the 21% OBC quota should be bifurcated to give 4% of it to the SBC, which already has 1% within the 50% limit. “This would be acceptable to the court and the dispute would permanently end,“ Singh told the gathering.
Mahuwa, on the other hand, suggested that the government should get the SBC quota secured by the Constitution's Schedule IX so that the courts cannot interfere with it even if the overall reservation shoots the 50% limit. “It should not be a problem since the same party (BJP) is ruling in the state and at the Centre,“ he said.

Movement of nearly a dozen trains on GanganagarBathinda section was affected on Friday after residents of this township staged a dharna at the railway station for halt of two trains -GanganagarNanded Sahib and Bikaner-Sarai Rohila at Malout.
Hundreds of protesters, including traders, descended on the tracks at 10am and were still protesting at the time of filing of this report. “We went on hunger strike from May 6 to 21 but it had no impact of the authorities so we decided to disrupt the rail traffic today,“ said Rail Thahrao Sangharsh

Committee convener Sukhdev Singh Gill. He claimed there was complete bandh in Malout as the residents want the two train to stop here. While Ganganagar-Nanded train reaches here at 4.30pm, Bikaner-Sarai Rohila train's arrival time is 5.15am. “As business activities of the traders here are linked to those in Delhi and Rajasthan, both these trains suit the business class. However, in the absence of stoppage at Malout, we have to go either to Bathinda or Abohar to board these trains,“ said cloth merchant Prem Kumar.
Train passengers were a harried lot. Naresh Kumar, who was among those stranded in Bathinda, claimed, “Hundreds of train passengers had to face a lot of hardship on this summer day due to the rail blockade. I had to reach Abohar for an urgent work but had to cancel the visit.“
Muktsar DC Jaskiran Singh said, “I have forwarded their demand to the railway authorities .“

A delegation of Gujjar community would hold talks with the government at Bayana in Jaipur today to discuss the issue of five per cent quota in jobs.
Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla took the decision to hold talks with the government yesterday following which the meeting was planned.
Mr Bainsla is not a part of the delegation which would hold talks with a committee of three ministers, that comprises of Rajendra Rathore, Arun Chaturvedi and Hem Singh Bhadana.
"The meeting would take place between the Gujjar delegation and three ministers at Bayana in the evening," IG Bharatpur Biju George Joseph told PTI.
Meanwhile, around 500-700 members of the community are present at the railway tracks near Pilukapura in the district, another police officer said.
As the number of people on the track dwindled yesterday, Mr Bainsla asked the community members last evening to gather maximum people on the track to build pressure on the government.Story First Published: May 23, 2015 13:23 IST
