For hundreds of tourists, the extended stay at Rameswaram was just an inconvenience and not a bitter experience.
Some of them felt their overnight stay in the railway station was a demonstration of solidarity with fishermen. They left the island after the first train chugged out at 10.55 a.m. Friday.
More room rent
The removal of the track at some places near Thangachimadam meant they had to spend more money on room rent even as 200-odd passengers spent the night on the railway premises. With the road link to the mainland also severed, tourists and pilgrims were stranded at Rameswaram and Ramanathapuram.

their tour plan to catch the flight to Mumbai on October 2. He said the sudden development was only an inconvenience and not a bitter experience. His wife, Lakshmi, a political activist, said she was overwhelmed by the support of hotel staff at a difficult time. “They did not charge us anything extra for additional hours of stay and also kept us informed of the developments.” By staying back at Rameswaram, her family had expressed its solidarity with the fishermen, she added.
Railway officials ensured water, toilet and electricity to those who slept in the waiting and circulating halls and on the platforms.
Track restored
A few senior railway officials and 60-odd men restored the rail link between Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram on Friday. It took only 53 minutes for them to fasten the left rail that was pulled off to 850 metres at Thangachimadam.
“The Railway police gave us clearance for starting the work at 8.02 a.m. We began the work at 8.05 a.m. and completed it by 8.58 a.m.,” Senior Divisional Safety Officer A. Ravichandran said. The work was coordinated by Senior Divisional Engineer (Coordination) S. Kannan.
Traffic was allowed after Divisional Engineer (North) Pannerselvam gave a fitness certificate after an inspection between Mandapam and Rameswaram.
The Rameswaram-Chennai Egmore Express, one of the three express trains stranded on the island, left at 10.55 a.m. The railway employees also repaired the gates at the Thangachimadam level crossing.
The Tamil Nadu Railway Police have registered a case of rioting, sabotage and trespass under the Indian Penal Code and the Indian Railway Act, 1989, Railway Deputy Superintendent of Police V. Karthikeyan said.

Hundreds of tourists, especially from north Indian States, were stranded for a night at Rameswaram railway stations after the rail tracks was damaged by an angry mob at Thangachimadam on Thursday evening.
It led to lot of inconvenience to all of them. Some had to pay additional on rooom rent and for 200-odd passengers, the rescheduling of trains meant that they had to spend the night on the railway premises.
With the road link from the island to the mainland too cut off by the protestors, the tourists and pilgrims were stranded both at Rameswaram and Ramanthapuram. It was restored later around 11a.m. on Friday.

as they were stranded on the road for five long hours in the night. "Later, we had to return to Ramanathapuram to find food and room to spend the night," one of the women members said. Over 10 persons, including children had to manage in two double-room accommodation as almost all the lodges in the town were crowded.
For another group of nine from Surat, the delay in departure to Chennai from Rameswaram meant that they had to cough up Rs. 12,000 on a car travel to Chennai in order to catch the connecting train to Mumbai on Friday night.
"Besides money, we have lost one full-day on travel which we could have used for sight-seeing, as planned, in Chennai," Vicky Olpadwala (28), said.
It was the same case with the family of S.G. Taliwal, a senior scientist with a Central Government department. The family from Baroda, had to cut-short their sight-seeing in Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram, as they have to catch flight to Mumbai on October 2 morning," he said.
However, he said the sudden development was only an convenience but not a bitter experience.
His wife, a political activist, said that she was overwhelmed by the support of the hotel staff during a difficult time. "They did not charge us anything extra for additional hours of stay and also kept us informed about the development outside," Lakshmi said.
She said that by staying back at Rameswaram, her family too had shown solidarity behind the fishermen of Thangachimadam who were protesting against the death penalty awarded to five fishermen on charge of smuggling narcotics.
"People here have shown they support to the family. I am reminded of two workers of Uttar Pradesh, who got no support from the State when they were beheaded (for some crime) in a Gulf country," she said.
The railway officials had ensured water, toilet and eletricity facility for the pilgrims who had slept at the railway waiting hall, circulating hall and platforms. "Food was available for them at the railway stall and also outside," an official said.
"Elected representatives from Rameswaram Municipality supplied food packets to the stranded passengers in the morning," he added.
