Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner Markand Khete Malish said that water has entered houses in several villages in the district and efforts had been launched to supply necessary food and other essential items to the affected. Irrigation Minister, H S Chattha said that although there had been unprecedented discharge of 8.06 lakh cusecs in river Yamuna, the heavy floods have not yet caused any serious damage to the protection structures constructed along the river in the state. Chattha said that the effect of the peak discharge was expected to reach Delhi in 48 hours after crossing Hathini Kund Barrage in Yamunanagar and after spreading in the plains in Haryana.

Patna: Two days after the Janata Dal (United) called it quits with Bharatiya Janata Party, the friends-turned-foes on Tuesday clashed outside the BJP office here, leaving many injured. While the principal opposition party observed 'Vishwasghat Diwas' across Bihar, JD(U) and BJP workers beat each other up with bamboo sticks and iron rods in Patna during the shutdown, injuring nearly half a dozen workers of both the parties. The clashes took place after the BJP workers raised slogan against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JD-U workers countered them by raising slogan against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, a police official said. The clash broke out on the Veer Chand Patel Path - location of their state unit offices. Senior BJP leaders including CP Thakur, Sushil Kumar Modi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Syed Shahnawaz Hussain were detained at Dak Bunglow chowk, police said. Describing the bandh as "the biggest observed in Bihar...

since Emergency", Hussain said, "This is the beginning of the downfall of the Nitish government. We have not see such a massive shutdown earlier and JD(U) people will agree with me regarding the intensity of the bandh." Maeanwhile addressing a press conference, Bihar BJP chief Mangal Pandey said, “We were attacked by armed JDU workers outside our office." Hitting out at the Nitish government over secularism claims, Pandey said that BJP’s minority woman leader Fahida Khanum was assaulted and was singled out because of her religion and JD(U) talks of secularism. “We want to thank the people of Bihar for fully supporting us in our 'Bihar bandh' call,” Pandey further said. The buses in which these leaders were being taken away to Gardanibagh stadium was thronged by BJP workers. Earlier, the leaders led a protest march from party headquarters to Dak bunglow chowk in the heart of the town. As the law and order situation appeared to get out of control, District Magistrate N Sarvanan Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj rushed to the spot and pacified the warring groups. Talking to reporters, Bihar unit BJP chief Mangal Pandey charged that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had instigated JD(U) workers to foil the BJP-sponsored bandh and attack its workers. The bandh affected normal life with BJP workers forcing closure of shops, market places and disrupting movement of trains in the districts like Darbhanga and Nalanda - the native district of the Chief Minister, official sources said. Bandh supporters also blocked roads in Aurangabad, Purnia, Muzaffarpur and other districts. The day-long bandh has been called by BJP in protest against JD(U) parting ways with it in the wake of the appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's election campaign committee chief. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said his party has taken to the streets in Bihar as people were feeling "deeply humiliated and cheated" since they had given the mandate to JD(U)-BJP to govern. "We were governing very well. And suddenly, only because of ego and arrogance, you sought to break this alliance. Therefore, the people are really feeling very deceived. And to articulate that concern, we have hit the streets today," he told reporters here. On 'Brand Modi' taking BJP through in the Lok Sabha polls, Prasad said, "Modi is a very popular leader because of his governance, because of his integrity, because of his leadership...Whether he will become the Prime Ministerial candidate or not is a question which has to be decided by the party's Parliamentary Board." Taking on the Bihar Chief Minister, he said in 2003, Nitish Kumar had showered praised on Modi and maintained that he had material to serve the nation. "What happened in ten years?," Prasad said and criticised Kumar for not extending the "due protocol" to the Gujarat Chief Minister when he came to Bihar in 2010. The BJP leader accused Kumar of playing "politics of rank opportunism and convenience". He said, "If Modi is one of the most popular leaders of India, it is Nitish Kumar who is having a problem on that score...It is basically pure and simple vote bank politics." On Prime Minister Manmohan Singh describing Kumar as secular and the Bihar CM thanking him for the remark, Prasad said, "I am very happy that Nitishji was so desperate to get a certificate from the Prime Minister about his secular credentials. Good luck to him!" "But he is known to have impeccable anti-Congress credentials. And if you are inching towards that for rank opportunism, I am sure the people of the country are watching," he said, adding that the people would give a fitting response. Soon after the JD(U) ended its alliance, the BJP declared a black day that accused JD(U) of 'vishwasghat' (treachery). The JD(U) has 118 seats in the 243-member Assembly, four short of a majority, while the BJP has 91 members. There are six independents, while the Congress has four members.

Janata Dal-United here on Tuesday.Locals media reports confirmed that several trains were also stopped and roads blocked by BJP activists, as they began a state-wide shutdown to protest what it called a betrayal by the JD(U).The BJP-led protest is taking place to highlight the wrong step taken by the JD(U) to end their 17-year-old alliance in Bihar. The day is being observed by the BJP as "Vishwasghaat Diwas".Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi, who was the deputy chief minister in the Nitish Kumar Government, said they would observe Betrayal Day on Tuesday by observing a state wide shutdown.Demanding the resignation of Nitish Kumar, Modi said Kumar should seek a fresh mandate as JD (U) leader after the separation.Putting an end to all the speculations, the Janata Dal (United) on Sunday finally announced that there would not be any alliance with the BJP in Bihar.Addressing a press conference here, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said that the developments in the last six months had made things difficult for them to work together with the BJP."We were in the NDA for 17 years and we had a national agenda that was formed with Atalji and Advaniji. We have tried to stick to the framework of the NDA but for the past 6-7 months situation has changed," he said."Any alliance runs by friendship and trust - we tried our best to run the alliance," he added. BJP leaders like Shahnawaz Hussain and Ravishankar Prasad are taking part in the protest. The JD (U) has 118 MLAs in 243-member Bihar assembly and needs the support of only four more MLAs to have a majority. There are 91 MLAS from BJP, 21 from RJD and one each from LJP and CPI in the state assembly.

Heavy rain, landslides, flash floods leave pilgrims stranded
Due to the heavy downpour in much of north India, around 36 pilgrims, including six children, who were on a religious trip to Chardham, have been stranded in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district for the past 24 hours. The religious tour was organised by the members of 'Bhartiya Yoga Sanstha', Chandigarh. On June 7, 22 senior citizens with six children left for the Chardham yatra to Uttarakhand's Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamnotri shrines. The rains have triggered flash floods in the Ganga, Yamuna and their tributaries. At most places in Uttarakhand, a large number of bridges, roads, vehicles and buildings have been destroyed."For more than 24 hours, we have been struck at Karan Prayag, a place 5 kms ahead of Chamoli, Uttarakhand. On Sunday night, we got a place to stay, but since morning we have been stuck on the road. We neither have any water to drink, nor anything to eat," Krishna Goyal, one of the pilgrims stranded in Uttarakhand, said over the phone. She added, "There are thousands like us who are stuck at this place, as there are several buses with pilgrims stalled at the roads. At Chamoli the situation is very critical, as due to heavy rainfall, the roads are damaged and vehicles are unable to move. The passengers are struck on the roads and have no place to go."
"We have contacted a senior leader from Chandigarh and as a result a PCR van came and guided us towards a place to stay near Chamoli, but we could not reach there," Krishna said.
She said, "We were on our religious tour to Chardham, we have been to Gangotri, Kedarnath and were on our way to Badrinath. But, due to bad weather, we decided not to proceed further and chose to return, but on our way the bus got struck in the traffic jam and we have nowhere to go.""We request the administration to take us out from this place," the pilgrim said.Davinder Sharma, a city-based businessman who has recently come from Uttarakhand recounts the horrific condition of the place.Sharma said, "The condition of Uttrakhand is horrific just now. Heavy rainfall has made the situation worse. The torrential rain has caused landslides and damaged several bridges and roads. Thousands of people are stuck on the roads. It has also led to the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra."

Nearly half-a-dozen people were injured here in a clash, several trains were stopped and roads were blocked on Tuesday when the BJP began a state-wide shutdown to protest what it called a betrayal by the JD(U).
Several trains were forcibly halted and national highway blocked Tuesday as the workers and leaders of the Bharatiya Janat Party (BJP) began a state-wide shutdown to protest the betrayal of ruling party Janata Dal-United JD(U) that ended its 17-year-old alliance Sunday.
The cracks between the BJP and JD(U) appeared when Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar opposed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s decision to make Modi its public face for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

in the state.
Nearly half a dozen workers of BJP and JD(U) workers were injured after they clashed and attacked each other with bamboo sticks and iron rods in Patna during the shutdown.
According to police officials here, JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan and three other party leaders were injured when BJP workers attacked them following the clash.
The clashes took place after the BJP workers raised slogan against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JD(U) workers countered them by raising slogan against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, a police official said.
The BJP workers stopped half a dozen trains, including long route trains, at different railway stations across the state and roads, including the national highway, were blocked.
“The strike supporters, mostly BJP workers, blocked important roads including the national highway and state highway at various place,” said a police official.
Authorities have “made elaborate security arrangements in view of the shutdown”, assured a senior government official.
In Patna, the shutdown evoked mixed response with busy roads like Ashok Rajpath, Bailey Road, Patna-Danapur Road and Fraser Road being blocked.
Soon after the JD(U) ended its alliance with the BJP, it was declared as a black day by BJP that accused JD(U) of ‘vishwasghat’ (treachery).
The JD(U) has 118 seats in the 243-member assembly, four short of a majority, while the BJP has 91 members. There are six independents, while the Congress has four members.
