Expressing serious concerns over the number of accidents involving trains, Chairman, Railway Board, AK Mital today called for zero failure in signalling systems.
New Delhi: Expressing concern over the number of accidents involving trains, Chairman, Railway Board, AK Mital today called for zero failure in signalling systems.
Stating that more than 60 per cent of total accidents in Railways occur at unmanned level crossings, Mital asked the Signalling and Telecommunication (S&T) wing to come up with low cost but highly effective solutions to the problems.
“There are more than 60 per cent of total accidents in railways occurring at unmanned level crossings almost every 48 hours. S&T department should work out low cost solution to the problems,” he said at a seminar

here.
Criticising signal failure incidents, he said, “There are about 100 signal failures of our lakhs of signalling daily. Though failure is minimum, it is not acceptable. It has to be zero-failure signalling system. We have to have a system which is free from failures.”
“Today we are fully depending on loco pilot for safety. If the driver blinks for a moment, then there should be a technology to support him,” he said.
Mital also expressed concerns over the slow pace of installation of train collision avoidance system (TCAS), and stressed on the need to expedite it to curb mishaps.
“TCAS trial is going on for the last three years,. Now time has come to complete the trial on the 250 km section in one year,” he said.
TCAS is indigenously developed by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and its trial is going on in Delhi-Agra section and Chennai suburban route.

The Chennai-bound Pothigai Express from Sengottai rammed a two-wheeler at an unmanned level-crossing between Bikshandar Koil and Valadi railway stations a few kilometres from Tiruchi in the early hours on Thursday.
No one was injured in the accident which, however, led to the detention of the express train for a few minutes at the spot. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are on the look out for the two-wheeler owner who had left his vehicle on the track and took to his heels upon noticing the approaching train. Railway sources said Varadharajan was apparently inebriated and was riding a two-wheeler from his mother-in-law’s house in the odd hours. As the vehicle developed a glitch while crossing the level-crossing, Varadharajan tried to start the two-wheeler after putting the stand on the track.

noticing the train, Varadharajan fled the spot abandoning his two-wheeler on the track. The train rammed the vehicle which got caught in the engine’s cow catcher and was dragged to some distance before the train was brought to a halt.

columns of army (75 personnel each) were deployed in Ahmedadad last night, while two each have been deployed in Surat, Mehsana and Rajkot, army officials said on Thursday.
Army conducted flag marches in five areas of Ahmedabad on Wednesday . Train services have been affected as protesters have damaged tracks in at least eight places.
12 trains have been cancelled and 19 partially cancelled, a railway official said.
The violence started on Tuesday after a massive rally of the Patel community. Hardik Patel, who is leading the stir, had called for a state—wide bandh on Wednesday.
Six people were killed in firing by police and paramilitary forces, while two others died following clashes, police said.
Four deaths were reported in Ahmedabad, three in Gadh village of Banaskantha district and one in Mehasana town.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a televised address in Gujarati, the Prime Minister appealed for peace and emphasised that all the issues can be resolved through talks. “I appeal to all brothers and sisters of Gujarat that they should not resort to violence. The only ‘Mantra’ must be ’Shanti’ (peace),” said Modi.
Across Gujarat, a total of 133 companies of State Reserve Police as well as central paramilitary forces including CRPF and BSF had been deployed, according to Director General of Police P C Thakur.
Each company comprises 80 personnel. On Tuesday night, rampaging mobs had damaged bus stations, set on fire vehicles and also attacked the office of Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Mohan Kundaria, in Rajkot.PTI
