A strange sound is all that Abdul Rahman Sait heard, before realising that the S5 coach in which he was travelling from Thiruvananthapuram was sliding down in the midst of darkness. The coach, he recalled, was filled with screams and cries of passengers. Many passengers and railway staff travelling in the Island Expressconsider themselves it fortunate to have survived the derailment of this magnitude. Some of the coaches stood still atop the railway bridge. “Many passengers in the coach woke up to a huge the noise. We felt the coach sliding away from the track. I thought the train was falling into a lake as the noise of rubbles scraping against on the coach sounded like splashing of water. Many started to yell and cry and the luggage fell on many passengers,” said Mr. Sait, a passenger who himself sustained bruises. As the slide came to a standstill halt, passengers panicked...

and hunted for the door and emergency window, leading to a stampede-like situation in some of the coaches. “For five minutes, we had no idea of what was happening. We made our way out through the emergency window. We helped women and children to get out of the train first,” said Pradeep, another passenger hailing from Thrissur, Kerala. He was asleep on the upper berth and fell down in the impact.
Mr. Sait added “Not to exaggerate, but we heard abnormal sounds and the coach was shaking ever since the train picked up momentum. I was discussing this with my friend at midnight as the sound was scary.”
Some passengers had volunteered to get back into the derailed coaches to bring the luggage out but panicked as the coaches continued to slide. “The train was moving slowly as I got up to put on my sweater. There was a small sound, and then I realised that the train has derailed. It is a miraculous escape for all of us, as I thought this was the end,” said a railway staff travelling in S9 coach.

Several buses and a special train brought back passengers to Bengaluru while the line clearing work began. Passengers who traveled in 7 buses to the city were dropped off at various points before the buses made their way to the City railway station. This came as a surprise to Railways staff who had arranged for food packets for the arriving passengers. “Some buses came empty as the driver had dropped off the passengers at places like Town Hall and the bus station as they said that they had work to attend to,” an official manning the help-desk at the station said. Undamaged coaches of the derailed train were also shunted back to Bengaluru by afternoon.

Hundreds of commuters at Chennai Central had to make alternative plans to reach Bengaluru following the derailment of Kanyakumari – Bengaluru Island Express (Train No. 16525) near Jolarpettai in Vellore district early on Friday.
Southern Railway cancelled the Double Decker, Lalbagh and Bangalore Expresses, while Brindavan Express was operated till Jolarpettai. “If the Brindavan Express could be operated till Jolarpettai, why not our train too,” asked M.Kesavan, who had a confirmed ticket in the Double Decker. He was postponing his trip to Bengaluru, he said.
Many other passengers, after they were informed that

all Bengaluru-bound trains were cancelled, either postponed their plans or hired cabs and autos and rushed to Koyambedu to board government buses from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus or omni buses from the private bus terminus, commercial staff at the helpline said.
Helpline
Southern Railway’s helpline at Chennai Central station received plenty of calls from passengers checking the status of departure of trains from Chennai towards Coimbatore via Jolarpettai and Salem. They were informed that all trains on that route were being operated as schedule. K.P.Gurunath, who travelled on the Chennai – Bengaluru – Mysuru Shatabdi Express, thanked Southern Railway and the State Transport Department for arranging buses at Jolarpettai. “The train, scheduled to leave at 6 a.m., left after a delay of 40 minutes. We were initially told that an engine snag was the reason. But during the journey, we received SMS from friends and relatives about the derailment of Island Express,” he said. At Jolarpettai, they were informed that their train was terminated there. “We were relieved that there were no major casualties. We were also pleasantly surprised when we saw buses arranged for taking us to Bengaluru without any halt in between,” Mr. Gurunathan told The Hindu.
Southern Railway officials in Chennai said the Vellore district administration had arranged for 15 buses to pick up the stranded passengers at Jolarpettai. They said the entire fare will be refunded to passengers who had booked tickets in trains that were cancelled. They said the restoration works were being carried out by Southern Western Railway as the incident took place in their jurisdiction.
