A herd 18 elephants from the Tamil Nadu forests that crossed into Kuppam at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday caused disruption in rail traffic on the Chennai-Bangalore section.
The man-animal conflict in Kuppam -- the tri-State junction leading to Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu and Karnataka -- took a new turn in the small hours of Saturday when a herd of 18 wild elephants emerged on the railway track, holding up movement of trains for an hour. The elephants destroyed crops along the railway track. The forest officials and locals said that the herd from the Tamil Nadu forests crossed into Kuppam at 1.30 a.m., and started moving along the railway track at Mallur, near Kuppam railway station. The forest officials contacted the railway officials and asked them to slow down the rail traffic on the Chennai-Bangalore section. The Kaveri Express was halted for about 15

minutes, allowing the pachyderms to cross the tracks. A couple of goods trains also were held up on the section. The officials at Jollarpettai railway junction were also informed about the movement of elephants. The forest officials said that by Saturday morning, a herd of 11-elephants were spotted at Balla near Kuppam on the AP side, while another group had crossed into Tamil Nadu. Damage of crops was reported at long stretches in Avulanattam, Pathichenu, Kusuru and Puligunda hamlets. The Divisional Forest Officer (Chittoor West), T. Chakrapani, rushed to Kuppam in the early hours to monitor the situation. About 80 personnel of the department, including watchers, trackers and beat officers spread into the vulnerable villages.
A senior official told The Hindu that in case of emergency, steps would be taken to deploy wildlife management experts to tackle the elephants. The proximity of the herd to the human habitations is causing worry among the officials and villagers.

The Southern Railway, Salem Division, has announced that The Nilgiris Mountain Railway service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor will remain suspended for one more day on Saturday as Thursday’s landslip near the Kallar Railway Station has damaged the railway tracks.
Sources said that though the workers had begun restoration operations on Friday, rains had made it difficult to complete the work in a day.
The work would continue on Saturday as well and as a result, the train service would be suspended for a day more. The workers had used explosives to blast the boulders to remove them from the track and replace the damaged portions of the rails. More than 20 workers were engaged in the task. The services are likely to resume on Sunday. On Thursday, passengers returning from Udhagamandalam to

Mettupalayam were asked to get off the train near the Kallar station and board buses to continue their onward journey.
Special Correspondent from Udhagamandalam adds: The current wet spell, marked by almost continuous torrential rain, especially in Kotagiri, Coonoor and their surroundings, has triggered a number of run-offs. Though they present a pretty picture along the winding Ooty-Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road and the Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway, it reflects poorly on the watershed management, according to knowledgeable sources.Speaking to The Hindu they pointed out that tourists should be warned not to go near the run-offs as the ground would be slippery.

BOKARO: Another railway track was blown up by Maoists in Bokaro's Bermo sub-division on Monday night, only 12 hours after a portion of a track in Dhanbad railway division was exploded.
Birender Bahadur Singh, DRM, Dhanbad railway division, said the tracks were blasted a few minutes after the Chandrapura-bound goods train passed. "Maoists might have targeted the train but fortunately they missed it. The explosion was strong as it damaged overhead wires, sleepers and around 2.5 feet tracks," he said, adding that it created a crater about 1m deep. The Maoists, who are protesting against the arrest of their leader Mukhlal Mahto, targeted a tank wagon on Tuesday but it had a close shave as the explosive went off after the wagon crossed the stretch. "Maoists usually target railway tracks between Daniya and Jageshwar Vihar railway stations because the area

is densely forested. This is first time that they blasted tracks under Bokaro Thermal police station," said RPF inspector K Kashyap.
Railway services on Gomoh-Barakakhana track were disrupted for around six hours and Shaktipunj Express was diverted from Moori-Barkakhana on Tuesday. "Services were restored by 9 am. Freight services were mainly affected," said the DRM.

Coonoor. A house was partially damaged.
Disaster management staff was deployed without delay to clear the blocks.

Patna: A shutdown in Bihar on Tuesday to protest the arrest of three men for the alleged gang-rape of six Mahadalit women has hit rail and road traffic, police said.
The shutdown was called by the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Kisan Sanghathan.
Hundreds of activists headed by slain Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh's son Indu Bhusan disrupted road traffic and blocked railway tracks, affecting half a dozen trains.
"Protestors forcibly stopped Jan-Sadharan Express and Patna-Pune Express at Ara railway station for hours," an official said.
Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said: "Sangathan workers forcibly stopped trains at the Ara railway station by squatting on the tracks and disrupted train traffic at other places."

Indu Bhusan heads the Sanghathan, the political wing of the outlawed Ranvir Sena that was founded by Brahmeshwar Singh.
They have demanded a CBI probe into the alleged gang-rape of six Mahadalit women, all rag-pickers, who were allegedly gang-raped at gun point in Bhojpur district's Kurmuri village early this month.
One of the three arrested, Neel Nidhi Singh, is a former commander of Ranvir Sena.
However, a district administration official said the shutdown evoked mixed response and only partially hit normal life in Ara, district headquarters of Bhojpur.
He said the Sangathan's members took to the streets to enforce the shutdown in Ara and blocked several roads, crippling the movement of vehicles on Ara-Patna and Ara-Sasaram roads.
Protestors also raised slogans against the state government and burnt effigies of Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi and former chief minister Nitish Kumar.

by making the track non-susceptible to breaches due to heavy rains etc.
SCR has restored the affected Railway track within 32 hours by quickly mobilizing resources on a massive scale to tackle track breaches over a length of 350 meters on Visakhapatnam Rail route last week. Shri P.K.Srivastava, directed the Divisional Railway Managers to study in detail the topography and the geographical conditions in the vicinity of Railway track and vital installations situated in cyclone-prone areas. He emphasized that preventive measures such as appropriate diversion of nearby canals; proper de-silting of cross culverts passing across the track; provision of adequate water way at narrow cross culverts where water gushes across the Railway track with more force; and putting in place additional pipes and mesh/stone pitching near the track etc. shall be taken on priority to avoid the possibility of erosion of earth or breaches to Railway track.
The General Manager instructed the senior officials concerned to thoroughly inspect the vulnerable areas and undertake corrective works to avoid any scope for track getting affected in case of cyclones/heavy rains.Close liaison shall be maintained with the local State Government officials, especially the Irrigation officials to assess the likely impact of the canals, tanks and other water bodies near by the Railway track in areas with past history of breaches.
In this connection, SCR has initiated the process of preparing a standard protocol containing details of micro-level plans on the preventive measures to be taken; the preparatory steps to be put in place; mobilization of men and material well in advance to meet any emergency situation; and also clearly defined roles of various agencies/staff involved in the relief and restoration activities etc. This standard protocol can serve as a handy guide for immediately launching an effective and efficient response and also for avoiding disruption to Rail traffic in emergency situations such as cyclones/heavy rains.
