KOCHI: Several trains in the Ernakulam-Kottayam sector were delayed on Monday after two overhead electric lines snapped after a tree fell on them in the heavy rains. Due to this, the Ernakulam-Kottayam Passenger service got cancelled.
According to railway officials, an overhead cable, carrying 25,000 volts of electricity, snapped at Edappally section after a tree fell on it.
This caused the power supply to trip. The incident took place at 4.30 am. Soon after this incident another electric cable at ‘C’ cabin near Ernakulam North railway station broke after a coconut frond fell on it.
“A lot of welding work had to be done to restore the overhead electric lines. Owing to heavy rains and movement of rail traffic, we could not go

ahead with the task of restoring the electric lines immediately. In order to avoid any further delay, we requested the concerned officers to replace the electric locos with diesel engines. The engines were replaced for Vanchinad Express and the Ernakulam-Kollam Memu service. Since, it is necessary for a goods train to be on time, we replaced its engine with a diesel one. Since the last available diesel engine was used for the goods train, we were forced to cancel the Ernakulam-Kottayam passenger service which operates at 7.15 am on Monday,” Ernakulam Railway Area Manager Rajesh Chandran said.
He added that the railways is aware that this has caused a lot of nuisance to the passengers who travel in the Kottayam-Ernakulam route, but they could not foresee any other solution.
Traffic was restored by 7.30 am after welding works were carried out on the overhead electric cables. At least six to eight trains got delayed by at least 1 or two hours.
Officials said that they have launched an investigation to confirm the reason behind the electric line disruption.
“This is a very rare case. However, we have received reports that on a earlier occasion crows were responsible for snapping the electric line at Edappally.
“The strong impact of the wind and rains, could have resulted in the breakage,” the officials said.

Irate commuters from Talegaon, frustrated at the Railways' continued neglect of their station, staged a rail roko protest on Saturday morning, stopping the Sinhagad Express and a Pune-Lonavla local train.
Talegaon locals have long been demanding the Pune-Mumbai Sinhagad Express and the Pune-Nashik-Bhusaval Express trains stop here. "We have been demanding the Sinhagad Express halt at Talegaon for the last 26 years. The number of passengers from Talegaon and Ghorawadi who use the service has multiplied in recent years, but the number and frequency of available trains remain the same," said Popat Begade, Secretary of the Maval Pravasi Sangh, an organisation which has been trying to improve Talegaon's connectivity.Begade added that there are some 50,000 commuters from Talegaon-Ghorawadi who depend on rain connectivity. "We have submitted an application to the Pune Railway Division a week ago with these demands.

We want increased number of rakes for the Pune-Lonavla locals. The locals are all running late due to a shortage of rakes. We have conducted many meetings with the railway administration, but haven't yet received any response," Begade added.
Begade said the dilapidated nature of Ghorawadi station is another issue they want the Railways to take up.
"Pune Railway Division gets Rs 1.05 crore revenue from Talegaon and another Rs 6 lakh from Ghorawadi. But they are still not fulfilling the basic demands of commuters from these areas," he said.
Ram Ratan, the station master at Talegaon, said the protest was quickly quelled and didn't affect rail traffic.
"The Sinhagad Express was stopped for only five minutes. All trains were running on time," he said.
Y K Singh, spokesperson of the Pune Railway Division, said the Railways will conduct a survey before taking any decision. "We cannot provide an additional stop just because commuters are demanding it. We need to evaluate things and conduct a proper survey before taking any decision," he said.
The Divisional Railways Manager from Pune, Suneet Sharma, has called the Maval Pravasi Sangh for a meeting on Monday.

Margao: Two days after the restoration of the Konkan Railway route following the derailment of a goods train near Ratnagiri, train services continued to be disrupted with almost all trains on the route running several hours behind schedule.
Long distance trains are running at a much slower pace leaving passengers stranded at railway stations. Most affected are those who are heading to places in the Konkan region & Goa for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Konkan Railway sources said that most of the regular as well as special trains running between Mumbai & Goa were running about three to four hours late on Thursday.
"Except for the long distance trains that run between Southern Railway & other zonal railways via Konkan route which will take some time to return to their regular timings

due to late arrival of rakes, the trains between Mumbai & Goa have significantly made up for lost time. All efforts are being made by the railway administration to ensure that trains are restored to their normal schedule to enable passengers reach their destination in time," said Vaishali Patange, chief public relations officer, Konkan Railway.
"Updates on train runnings are being continuously announced at Konkan Railway stations. Information boards have also been displayed at stations. Passengers can call 139 & 022-27587939 for train-related enquiries," a source said.
With a view to ensuring better crew coordination at interchange points of the Central Railway & the Konkan Railway, the latter has stationed a special official at Roha station. Konkan Railway's jurisdiction spans from Roha to Mangalore.
Confusion had prevailed over the operational route of the crew of the Konkan Railway & the Central Railway during the maiden trip of the Mumbai-Goa double decker train on August 22 after the train reached Roha station. The Konkan Railway had to arrange for a replacement locomotive pilot to bring the train further up to Karmali railway station. The episode led to the train being delayed by over an hour. The deployment of a special railway official at Roha station is expected to avoid recurrence of such issues.
"Train services are being monitored at the highest level to ensure least inconvenience to passengers," Patange said.

CHANDIGARH: Radical Hindu activist and the main accused in the Samjhauta blast case, Swami Aseemanand, was on Thursday granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court.Sixty-eight people were killed in the blasts in two coaches of Samjhauta Express on February 18, 2007, near Panipat in Haryana.NIA had filed a chargesheet against Aseemanand and others on June 20, 2011, terming him the mastermind of the blasts and someone who had instigated others to carry out the terrorist act.
Lodged in Ambala jail for the past four years, Aseemanad was undergoing trial along with other accused before the special court of National Investigation Agency, Panchkula.

past four years and there are around 300 witnesses in this case -- some in Pakistan -- and it would take years to complete everyone's examination.
The court was also of the view that the NIA was not able to bring any cogent evidence against Aseemanand, so there was no ground to keep him in custody for long.
In his bail petition, Aseemanand argued that his name did not figure in the initial FIR lodged on February 19, 2007, by the railway police.
"In fact, the FIR was lodged against one Ajmat Ali, arrested on the basis of a sketch prepared on description of two passengers. When the case was handed over to NIA in July 2010, names of all accused were changed and the list included Aseemanand's name," his counsel has argued.
On November 30, 2013, the special NIA court, Panchkula, had dismissed his bail plea after accepting the NIA arguments that letting him out on bail would be fatal for the prosecution. NIA had also argued that since some of the accused involved in the case were still at large, and Aseemanand could tamper with the investigations.
With the bail of Aseemanand, three other accused in the same case, Lokesh Sharma, Rajinder Chaudhary and Kamal Chauhan are expected to get relief. They all are in Ambala jail.
According to Aseemanand's lawyers, after obtaining the detailed order from the high court, they would arrange surety to secure Aseemanand's release from Ambala jail. They said he is expected to be released on Saturday only.
