Dehradun: The thick blanket of fog covering Uttarakhand and west UP has thrown train schedules in the hill state haywire. Hundreds of passengers have been stranded, some for as long as eight hours, at the Dehradun railway station.
Passengers waiting to board the daily Link Express and the bi-weekly Upasana Express were the worst affected with the trains arriving six and eight hours behind schedule. While the Upasana Express arrived at 2am on Thursday instead of the scheduled 6:10pm on Wednesday, the Link Express reached the state capital at 7pm instead of 1:10pm. The delays in arrival pushed back the departures by an equal amount of time. Other trains have also been delayed by at least three to four hours.
"Kanpur, Aligarh, Chandausi and Moradabad are under thick fog cover.

Visibility is extremely poor, causing trains to slow down to a crawl," officials at Dehradun station said. If they are to be believed, this situation which they say is a common phenomenon during winter will continue at least for the next one-and-a-half months. The single track arrangement between Dehradun and Haridwar also compounds the problem, slowing down trains arriving from Haridwar
The lack of amenities at the station has added to the passengers' woes. There are space constraints and an inadequate number of washrooms for the large crowd that has gathered. There are only two retiring rooms which can at most accommodate two families at a time.
On an average, the Dehradun railway station sees 8,000 commuters and about 12 trains every day.
