the accident, sources suggest that it could have been due to a signalling failure or also due to the driver of the Mail loco missing the signal.
The injured were rushed to a government hospital in Avadi. EMUs from Tiruttani towards Moore Market Complex were detained at Pattabhiram and other stations in between. Similarly, all suburban services from Moore Market Complex towards Tiruvallur and Tiruttani were cancelled, resulting in several thousand commuters getting stranded.

Eight people were injured when the locomotive of the Chennai–Trivandrum Mail collided with an Electrical Multiple Unit and then derailed at Pattabhiram railway station on Thursday evening.
According to official sources, the driver of the locomotive of the Mail (train no. 12623), passed a signal that was in ‘danger’ (red) and hit the EMU that was crossing multiple lines, including the main line track while on its way to Pattabhiram Military Siding station.
On adjacent tracks
However,

the trains were travelling on adjacent lines and not on the same line, officials said.
The injured were initially rushed in 108 ambulances to military hospitals in Avadi and later referred to the Railway Hospital in Perambur. They had sustained fractures and other injuries on their hands and legs. The accident took place at 8.15 p.m., officials said.
The locomotive, a luggage-cum-brake-van and a general compartment of the Mail got derailed. Three compartments of the EMU were severely damaged, officials said, adding that the guard of the EMU had a miraculous escape.
“There were not many passengers in the EMU coaches that were hit by the Mail. The driver of Mail applied the brakes in an attempt to slow down the train and hence the damage was minimised,” said T. Sadagopan of Pattabhiram.
Traffic on the sector — both main line as well as suburban services between Moore Market Complex to Tiruttani were cancelled. Similarly, trains bound for Chennai Central and MMC were halted at Pattabhiram and other stations. After the problem was rectified, the line was declared fit for traffic at 10 p.m.
Commuters stranded
Several thousand passengers were stranded as a result, on both directions.
K. Parthiban, who had come to the city to visit Marina Beach with his family, said he depended only on suburban trains as there were no direct bus services to his house.
Anxious passengers also surrounded southern railway staff and personnel of Railway Protection Force, including inspector N. Alagarsamy in an attempt to know the status of train services.
Trains delayed
According to V. Umashankar, Station Manager, Chennai Central, about 10 long distance trains were delayed.
The first train to leave after services were restored was the Chennai – Mangaluru mail at 10.25 p.m., after a delay of nearly two hours.
Railway officials had also opened a helpline number 2533 0714 at Central station.

National Conference MLA Abdul Majeed Larmi today criticised the railways for not inviting him for the flagging off ceremony of two new train services held in his Homeshalibugh constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.
"I was not invited by the railway authorities but by the Deputy Commissioner as I am the local MLA," he said.
The MLA questioned the motive of the PDP-BJP government to include the name of Sartaj Madni, PDP General Secretary and uncle of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, in the advertisements for inauguration of the new trains while his name

was excluded.
The function took place at Anantnag railway station.
"I left the function when the PDP supporters began hooting as my name was being called on the podium," Larmi said.
He said he told the Chief Minister that he would not want to be part of a function where political opponents are being disrespected.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier said, "What a shame that an office bearer of a political party is a guest of honour but the local MLA isnt included."
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu flagged off the two new DEMU train services between Banihal-Baramulla and Baramulla-Budgam through video conferencing from Rail Bhavan in New Delhi.
"What a pity that the @BJP4India & @jkpdp conspired to denigrate the institution of elected representatives! cc @sureshpprabhu," Omar wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.
In another tweet, he said, "The station where the function is being held is in Homshalibugh constituency @sureshpprabhu sahib."
Omar said, "Was he (Majeed) snubbed because he is @JKNC_ MLA? I remember Mufti Sahib (former Chief Minister and PDP patron) being given a seat on the dais with (then PM) Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs (Sonia) Gandhi during my term (as CM) even though it wasnt his area".

As the news about the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti undertaking the train journey up to Baramulla herself spread on Thursday hundreds of farmers from Watwaan Pattan assembled on the railway track to draw her attention towards the pathetic condition of a railway tunnel in the area.
The farmers amid anti-railway department slogans blocked the railway track while anxious Railway officials sought help from police and civil administration to disperse the agitated protesters.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pattan Hameeda Akhtar along with Tehsildar Syed Faheem and a police team rushed to spot to diffuse the situation.

The agitated farmers complained that the railway tunnel in Pattan is not only stinking but also in dilapidated condition. They accused railway department of using dilly dally tactics to avoid its repairing.
“We have no option but to stop the moving train of Chief Minister to draw her attention of negligent Railway authorities to the pressing matter. The tunnel stinks making pedestrians unable to walk through it,” protesters told the visiting team.
The protesters agreed to disperse peacefully after SDM assured them she will personally look into the matter and the work on the tunnel will be started within a week. “It was an embarrassing situation for us. Any how we motivated the protesters. Hopefully, the repairing work on the tunnel will be started within a week,” an official told CNS.
Pertinently, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, flagged off two new passenger trains for Kashmir on Thursday at Islamabad railway station and undertook the train journey up to Baramulla herself in the new service.

Meanwhile, a bulletin issued by the Met office said the heat wave condition would prevail for two more days and thunder squall may occur at some places in the State.
Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway on Wednesday cancelled all trains running between Guwahati and Silchar due to heavy rain and landslides at many places on this route, an official spokesperson said.
“Heavy rain is still continuing and it has resulted in landslides at many places. We have been forced to cancel all trains between Guwahati and Silchar,” he added.
Restoration work was on, but was being hampered because of the rain, he said.

The Matheran toy train was quickly back on track, but the service itself is making giant losses
The Neral–Matheran toy train experienced an unusual mishap: one of its coaches derailed on Sunday evening. It is quite likely this happened because the train was exceeding its speed limit. Which, on some sections, is 5kmph. So, while the 130-odd passengers on board experienced a nasty surprise, albeit in slow motion, they were none the worse for the experience. What’s more, the train service recommenced on Monday morning, and is back in service, as it has been since 1907 — with a gap between 2005 and 2007, when it closed for repair after flood damage — carrying holiday-makers up to the hill station. Aside for

an ambulance, the train is the only motorised transport permitted in Matheran.
Confirming this a senior Central Railway official explained, "The train that was restarted into service six years back has a maximum speed potential of between 20 and 25kmph. However, in the vulnerable segments of the Matheran narrow-gauge tracks it plies upon, there is a prescribed 5kmph speed limit, which may not have been followed by the driver." Chief public relations officer, Narendra Patil, said that a three member committee, comprising the senior divisional safety officer, senior divisional mechanical engineer and senior divisional civil engineer, have been entrusted with the task of enquiring into the accident and submitting its report.
The train’s low speed limit is partly because of the gradient it travels, and partly because of the age and stability of the system itself. It also does not operate during the monsoon months for safety reasons.
The line is the only narrow-gauge section of the Mumbai division; it has been more than 20 years since all other railway tracks in the state have been converted to broad gauge.
Much like the few other remaining ‘toy train’ services in the country, the train is a tourist attraction, but one that doesn’t make the railways any money. A senior railway official told The Hindu, that the railways made “giant spendings” on maintenance, operations, and staff salaries, far more than the revenues earned from the service. “Perhaps,” he said, “it is time for the service to be taken up either by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation that operates the Deccan Odyssey, or people themselves."
Any takers, whether it’s the MTDC, Matheran fans or rail enthusiasts, would find the Central Railway welcoming them with open arms. Just as long as they remember the speed limit.
