Crores has been incurred by the railways to complete this section. The section consists of only one tunnel i.e. Pir Panjal Tunnel which is 11.215 Km long. This tunnel is longest transportation tunnel in Indiaand third longest in Asia. The tunnel has been constructed with total cost of Rs.1300.00 Crores. Almost seven years have been taken by Railways to complete this tunnel. About 7,500 Metric Tonnes of steel, 3, 28,000 cubic meters of concrete has been used and10,00,000 cubic meters of underground excavation has been done to complete the tunnel. 1300 workers and 150 engineers worked round the clock to accomplish this challenging task. In order to expedite the work on this tunnel by creating more working faces, one Adit of 772.00 meter length and one Shaft of 56.00 meter depth and 11.00 meter diameter was constructed. The tunnel has been constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) which was firstly used on such large scale in India. This method optimizes the tunnel design by mobilizing the inherent ground strength in adopting a curved section, providing primary support system immediately after the excavation and monitoring the ground behavior while permitting it to develop its inherent strength. Maximum overburden on this tunnel is 1100 meters and bore holes up to 640 meters depth were drilled for Geotechnical investigations. A 3.0 meters wide road has been provided inside the tunnel for maintenance, emergency rescue and relief operations. The tunnel has been made water proof by providing continuous PVC membrane between primary and secondary lining. The tunnel has been equipped with the State of the Art air quality monitoring system, ventilation system, communication system, fire fighting system and emergency rescue system in case of emergency. Ballastless Track system has been provided inside the tunnel which is pollution and maintenance free with very good riding quality. By adoption of these systems, Pir Panjal tunnel will be totally dry, pollution free, safe, comfortable and completely illuminated. Opening of Banihal-Qazigund railway section will connect Jammu Division with Kashmir Division of Jammu & Kashmir State. This section will have two main railway stations i.e. Banihal in Jammu Division & Qazigund in Kashmir Division. In addition to these a halt station is also being provided at Hillar village in Anantnag district which is about 4 Km from Qazigund station for the convenience of local public as per their demand. Now a day a lot of problems are being faced by passengers travelling between Banihal and Qazigund due to closure of Jawahar Tunnel in winter season owing to heavy snow fall. During this winter also one way movement of vehicles was resorted to between twin capital cities of Jammu & Srinagar on National Highway alongwith sudden closures for almost four months from Dec’12 to Mar’13 owing to heavy snowfall and slippery conditions leading to a lot of inconvenience to stranded passengers. All these problems will be reduced to a large extent by running of train services between Banihal-Qazigund. Moreover the distance between Banihal and Qazigund will also be reduced from 35 Km road length to 17.729 Kms railway line. It will be a cheaper, faster and dependable mode of transport.

Foolproof safety in the lap of luxury — railway passengers rarely have it so good. If the South Eastern Railway (SER) authorities are to be believed, the Ranchi-Delhi Rajdhani Express will flaunt its first Linke Holfmann Busch (LHB) coach this month. Confirmation in this regard is said to have reached the SER headquarters at Garden Reach, Calcutta, from New Delhi on Wednesday. “Expect it to hit the tracks any day in June,” said an SER source. Initially, the lone LHB coach, which will come from the railway factory in Kapurthala, will be attached to the Rajdhani that runs via Barkakana on Saturdays. A second coach, which is slated for arrival after the first one runs smoothly, will grace one of the two other... Read more...
Rajdhanis via Gomoh. The luxury coaches, boasting German technology, had debuted in India in 2000. The first lot of 24 was imported. The rest started being manufactured at Kapurthala after technology transfer. The coaches are designed for an operating speed of up to 160kmph and can go up to 200kmph. However, they have been tested up to 180kmph. Their length of 23.54 metres and width of 3.24 metres means a higher passenger capacity, compared to conventional rakes. Also, an LHB coach is “anti-telescopic”, which means they do not get crushed length-wise in the event of a collision. These are made of stainless steel and the interiors are aluminium that makes them lighter. Advanced braking and suspension systems make LHB journeys fare more comfortable and safer. The coaches of the three Rajdhani trains that currently ply between Ranchi and Delhi are more than 20 years old and passengers claim many of them make a creaking sound. “People of Ranchi had long been demanding replacement of old coaches of Rajdhani trains. Garden Reach had taken up their demand with the Railway Board and the board has given the go-ahead,” confirmed Soumitra Majumdar, the chief public relations officer of SER. Apart from Rajdhani, LHB coaches will also be fitted to Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express to ensure the safety of 2,500-odd passengers.

Additional General Manager, and other Principal Heads of Departments of Central Railway were also present on the occasion. Indian Railways has entered the 160th year of its existence. History is witness to the fact that Indian Railways formed the nation that is India today and it cannot be separated from its social fabric. Indian Railways has grown with India and has not only bequeathed the country its vast architectural heritage in the form of station buildings and other structures but is also the pivot of the nation’s economy today. It is inconceivable to imagine an India without its railways. The railways in their own powerful way have paved the way for the growth of the nation and thus are a lasting symbol of India’s unity. While the railways is marching steadily towards the future, it is imperative to remember the very foundations on which it was built; it is time to reclaim the past which may be getting lost in the annals of time. Moreover, it has always been the objective of Indian Railways to preserve the past as its rich history is undeniably one of the most compelling tales in the story of India. This photo exhibition culls out the interesting moments of the life of this organization concentrating primarily on the first 100 years of it existence which was a period of great turbulence for the Railways as well as the world. It seeks to bring the railways back into the forefront of public consciousness. It takes the narrative of the railways back in time from its current point, revisit memories in sepia and black and white tones to understand the transitional, exciting tumultuous phases that this organization has gone through. The railways in India, as elsewhere in the world, revolutionized traditional concepts of space and time and led to new geographies being formed. The photo exhibition does not trace the history of Indian railways sequentially from 1853 to the present. It is a thematic portrayal of the many facets of this organization. Through many rare photographs sourced from railway archives, Press information Bureau, railway museums, the importance of the railways in the lives of the people, its role as an integrating force, as a catalyst of history and as a mute spectator to the unfolding historical events have been showcased. The photographs, encompassing all the fundamental aspects of the railways are evocative of an era long gone but which has shaped the present. The ‘Personalities ‘section is of special interest as it reveals the views of some eminent leaders on the Railways. Similarly, the sections on ‘Station Architecture’ are of immense interest as they more than anything else speak of the time in history of their construction. Their interiors are reflections of the society, the social stratification, while their exteriors present a larger picture of the developmental stage of the town and city. A section has been dedicated to the workmen, who are solely responsible for the running of the railways. The photographs reflect the hard labour which is put in to transport millions of people across thousands of kilometers marking practices most of which are still fundamental to railway working today. 2 Photos (274 KB) 2 Photos (258 KB)
