About 100 students designed projects on safety in railways including automatic coach guidance, signal control system and submitted a thesis to the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities.
The engineering students who designed the circuits and software programmes displayed them before the Vijayawada Division Railway officials at Railway Auditorium on Friday. The projects would be useful both for the railways and passengers, said the students.
Vijayawada Additional Divisional Railway Manager S. Subba Rao, SCR Women’s Welfare Organisation president Priti Awasthi and heads of various departments visited the software products exhibition. Ms. Awasthi praised the budding engineers for designing the projects with innovative ideas.

University – Vamshi Krishna, Aravind, Siddhartha and Vara Prasad – prepared a circuit on Signal Control System, which would prevent accidents and provide safety for the passengers.
“In Signal Control System, we placed a monitoring device on the signal pole and receiver in the engine. The train drivers can know the signal position (from each pole) through the receiver at some distance. Signal Control System will be useful particularly during winter seasons when there is heavy fog,” said Mr. Vamshi Krishna.
If the train crosses the red signal, the system would automatically slow down the train and prevent any possible mishap. The device was prepared after discussing the problem with loco drivers, said Mr. Siddhartha.
The GPS on Fire Detecting System would alert the railway authorities, if there was any fire in the coaches. Likewise, the Rail Tracking System, designed by four students – T. Bhavya, D. Kavya, Ch. Kranthi and K. Srujana -- of K.L. University, can alert the station master or superintendent of the next station through satellite system on the position of the tracks, location of train and at what time it was expected to arrive at the station. “We travelled in the train from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam and studied on implementation of Rail Tracking System, which can help reduce manpower and give accurate position of the train on tracks”, Ms. Srujana told The Hindu . Students also designed projects on digital caution order, power line failure, wireless energy meter, vigilance control device, and a digital eye for coach guidance automation.
The projects will be useful both for the railways and passengers, say the students

MUMBAI: From June, railway enthusiasts will again have a chance to witness a "steam engine" hissing its way up the hills of Matheran. The engine was last seen in Matheran's hills in November 2011.
It was pulled out of operation after embers from the coal-fired steam engine sparked fire on dry grass along the route. After the forest department and locals objected to the plying of the coal-fired train, the Central Railway (CR) has now found a solution to the problem. "Instead of coal, the newly modified steam locomotive will be fired by diesel," said CR's divisonal railway manager, Mumbai, Mukesh Nigam.
The modification of the B-794 steam locomotive is being carried out at Golden Rock Workshop, Tiruchirapalli, in South Eastern Railway at an approximate cost of Rs 20 lakh. "The steam

engine has its own charm and there were many requests to run the services through such locomotives," Nigam added.
Despite the modification, it will have the authentic sounds of the steam whistle. The engine will also get a fresh coat of corrosion-free glossy paint.
The refurbished locomotive is scheduled to arrive in the last week of May. The trial will be carried out for a few days after which the locomotive will be pressed into service in June. The train will be run only as a chartered service. It will be able to pull three coaches. The tariff is yet to be finalized. An official said, "Due to huge demand, we decided to re-introduce the service."

The bio-toilet costs about Rs.80,000 apiece and uses uses bacteria to decompose night soil. Authorities plan to install 200 of them in Padmavathi, Ajanta and other trains
After conducting a successful trial run of using bio-toilets in 17 coaches of Hyderabad-Mumbai and Kacheguda-Bangalore Express trains, the South Central Railway (SCR) has now decided to install 200 bio-toilets in a few more trains very shortly.
Bacterial decomposition
Developed by Railway Research and Standard Organisation (RDSO) and Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), a bio-toilet, has six compartments and uses Inoculums (bacteria) to decompose night soil.
The night soil from commode enters into the bio-tank, where the inoculums are stored and gets decomposed by the bacteria. The

decomposed human soil will next enter into chlorine tank and to get purified. Finally, the out put will be water and gas, said SCR spokesperson.
Onerous task of hygiene
Maintaining cleanliness at railway stations, especially the tracks at stations is always a task. Conventional toilets in trains discharge night soil onto the track, causing unhygienic conditions and corrosion to track and coach fittings, he said.
But with simple design and easier installation in coaches, these bio-toilets help in ensuring zero discharge of night soil on the tracks. SCR had commenced a trail run of using these bio toilets in Hyderabad-Mumbai and Kacheguda-Bangalore Express trains in January and it was found beneficial, he informed.
Each bio-toilet costs about Rs.80,000 and authorities are planning to install 200 of them in Padmavathi, Ajanta and other trains in a few months, he explained.
Bio-toilets with provision to replenish inoculums and chlorine are easy to maintain.
However, these toilets would get choked, if passengers dump bottles, plastic carry bags, cups, napkins etc into it via commode. It would choke the toilet, making it unusable, he added.

Sinha had told a newspaper Wednesday that it would be difficult to prove that Bansal was involved in the cash-for-jobs controversy as the former minister has a strong defence. The South Central Railway (SCR) plans to procure 200 more eco-friendly bio-toilets to provide the facility on more trains in the next few months.
The decision was taken after successful trial of 48 bio-toilets fitted to the 17 coaches being run on Hyderabad-Mumbai Hussain Sagar Express and Kacheguda-Bangalore Express.
Bio-toilets were developed jointly by Railway Research and Standard Organisation (RDSO) and Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE) for use in Indian Railways and are currently under trial in many of the zonal railways.
SCR, which has its headquarters here, took a lead in the trial and provided the facility in two trains.

the tracks, cause unhygienic conditions and corrosion to track and coach fittings endangering the safety. Passengers use toilets while trains are at platforms and the track get scattered with human excreta creating unpleasant situation for passengers on the platforms, said a statement from SCR on Friday.
With the advent of bio-toilets, the railways have found an answer to the vexatious problem.
The bio-toilet, which has six compartments, uses inoculums (bacteria) to decompose the waste. The waste from commode enters in to the bio-tank, (where the inoculums are stored), gets decomposed by the bacteria and next enters a chlorine. The output will be just water and gas.
The railways have appealed to passengers not to dump plastic bottles, carry bags, cups, napkins and other material in bio-toilets as they get chocked and go out of order.

The Hong Kong Light Railway is part of the city's complex public transport system of trams, buses and underground metros.
The light rail links 68 stops along 36 kilometres (22 miles) of track in the northwestern New Territories, a semi-rural region in the north of Hong Kong.
Its single-decker cars, which can take around 200 passengers, are connected to overhead electric cables and run along tracks on the streets which also branch off into the surrounding countryside.
Accidents are rare on the southern Chinese city's public transport system, which it promotes as one of the best infrastructures in the world.
But the safety of Hong Kong's waterways has remained under scrutiny since 39 people were killed when a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat crashed, in the worst maritime accident the city had seen in 40 years in October.
A report into the incident near Lamma Island found a "litany of errors" contributed to the crash and slammed the city's marine department for "systemic failings" in safety standards.
In November two chefs who worked at top British chef Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck restaurant were killed in Hong Kong when their taxi was crushed between two buses.
And in December, 24 people were injured, four seriously, after a bus collided with a coach near Hong Kong International Airport.
