Another Elephant mowed down by the speeding Poorvottar Sampark Kranti Exp in the Reserve Forest Zone of Dooars Same location where exactly 3 months ago 15941 Jhajha Dibrugarh Exp had killed 3 grown up elephants & a cub...but that incident took place near the twilight & due to low visibility the Loco Pilot could not have observed the elephants...But this time the LP of Poorvottar Sampark Kranti was in no mood to slow down @ broad day light & thus furiously hit the Elephant & dragged it down till another 200 metres before coming to a screeching halt.....Sad news for the entire North Bengal....If more such incidents keeps on happening, train services is surely going to be terminated....Members please find whether there is any conspiracy behind such incident or is it happening purely due to the conflict of human & wildlife interest....

PS: This region has the highest biodiversity of flora & fauna in entire network of Indian Railways...SO we should be responsible to conserve the richest BD but not @ the cost of terminating the entire Rly operation...Why isnt Rly building elevated corridor in this 167 km stretch...???

If more such incidents keeps on happening then Rlys will be compelled to stop the entire train operation in this 167 km stretch of the Eastern Himalaya's b/w Siliguri Jn & Alipurduar Jn...I request all the seniormost Member's & Admins to look into this matter & suggest the best possible way to curb any future occurence of such unfortunate incidents so that Rly operation may still continue to be in service in this very important corridor.

According to sources,Poorvottar Sampark Kranti was running> 100 kmph when it knocked down the elephant...Just 2 months ago, when there was a pact b/w the Forest Deptt & N.F.Rly Authorities that trains shall not run>50 kmph in the sensitive areas strictly prone to Wildlife, why was the Loco Pilot of Poorvottar Sampark Kranti driving>100 kmph..Was he trying to compete with Bhopal Shatabdi...??? These type of LP's should be immediately banned & terminated from their services....

Really sad not only for N. Bengal but all over the country. Elephants are our proud prized possessions because you do not find such breed anywhere else in the world and it is our first and foremost responsibility to save them AT ANY COST. IR should seriously consider operating trains on the corridors with strict speed restrictions, those can always be made up. Unfortunately, this keeps repeating itself. Why there is big news only when humans are killed by trains and not animals, especially the gentle giants of India who are at no fault.

Does the Region has any Speed Restrictions? If yes, then LP was at fault. If no, IR is at fault. Both the State Government, Central Government and IR should join hands and come up with all possible solutions that can be put into action to save the precious lives of these GIANTS. Technological Alerts, Screening Walls and many such more can be introduced on URGENT basis.

Yes fully agree with you Sir...Elephants are the biggest giants & their lives are much more precious than Human Lives...May be due to pressure from the Wildlife Organizations Rlys may entirely stop the operation of Train services in this stretch...but thats not a solution..they should immediately build elevated corridors in this 167 km stretch..@ whatever expenses....The expenses could be born by other Rly Zones where tracks pass through desert zones & there is no difficulty in train operation...All the Rly Zones should deliberatly contribute to North East Frontier Railway to build such elevated corridor because this 167 km stretch of N.F.Rly has the richest bio-diversity.

The region had 50 kmph permanent speed restriction @ Day Time & 30 kmph @ Night Time...The LP of 12502 was moving his train>100 kmph...because of his insensible act,the entire Rly Operation can come to a total S T O P.No new Exp trains have been introduce in this part in the last 2-3 yrs because of continuous killing of wildlifes....

That restriction is maintained only by the goods train....Express Train LP's are always in a hurry & they dont want to stick to the 50 kmph yardstick....thats why from past few years N.F.Rly have introduced all the trains via NOQ,NCB,DQG but no new trains have been introduced via APDJ,DLO,NMZ,SGUJ....Why Rly isnot building Elevated corridors in this stretch...I think all the profit making zones(SECR,ECoR,SER) should voluntarily contribute to NFR for making such Elevated Corridor.

Really a sad news. IR must not give any more trains on this route. All the summer/winter/puja specials should run via NOQ-NCB-NJP route. Freight activity has to be stopped on this line. Poorvottar Sampark Kranti must be diverted through shorter NJP-NCB-NOQ main line as it doesn't have a stop in Dooars. No night activity. Doubling of NJP-NCB-NOQ line.

There is no sure shot solution of this problem.
Some of measures can be taken to save life of precious wild life.
The State Govt wit Railway should come forward to make changes for safety:
Elevate rail track.
Create wide under passes for free movement of Wild life and water.
Identify some areas where passing is frequent.
Erect watch tower to monitor passing activity and wildlife movement with wireless communication.
Restrict speed specially when movement reported.
Minimize movement

There are so many Elephants that are still alive...& are freely roaming across the Rail Tracks....Thats why I mentioned that this region has the rickest bio-diversity..the 167 km Broad GAuge Rail Track b/w Siliguri & Alipurduar cuts across the length & breadth of 5 National Parks,Wildlife Sanctuaries which are the Natural Heritage of the country..two of them are UNESCO World HEritage site..so you can imagine the density of wildlives in this area....its like Life of Pie...

ELEPHANT DEATH.
The Railway family is deeply grieved by some incidents of death of ELEPHANTS on railway tracks passing through forest areas. Several measures have been initiated in consultation with Ministry of ENVIRONMENTS & FORESTS, which I am confident will substantially reduce such accidents and safe guard the lives of these giants.

Building an elevated corridor might take some time.... initially, using the resources at hand IR should:
1. As rightly said by Vishwanath, check animal spot tings and infirm control tower.
2. Install low voltage electrical shock wires around 50 m from Railway line. These will atleast curtail tress pass to some extent.
3. All LPs to honk frequently in this area....
4. Build low height boundary walls along the tracks which will guide the tuskers towards underpasses

The LP of 12502 has reportedly mentioned that though the train was running>100 kmph but as soon as he saw the 67 year Old Jumbo he put on the brakes & thus the train was considerably slowed down..alongside he blowed the horns incessantly..thus the elephant got too much angry & try to hit back the WDP 4B which resulted in the collison finally the train dragged the tusker for 200 mtr before coming to a halt...According to the reports of Forest Official this male tusker belonged to the same family as the one killed on 5th January by the UDL WDM 3A of 15941 Jhajha Dibrugarh Exp..the Elephant wanted to take revenge & thus misinterpreted the SGUJ WDP 4B with the UDL WDM 3A..after all Elephants are not Rail Fans & they dont know any differences b/w the Loco's so neither the elephants fault nor the LP's..only fault is of...

RAJABHATKHOWA - JAYANTI branch line.
The line was contruct by East bengal railway during prieod 1900-1910 . It was a meterguage line , in this branch there was 2 station BUXA ROAD & JAYANTI ..
After independence the line was still running .. But around 1964 the track was badly damaged by flood . From then the service was stopped for many years . But Due to low mentainence & high flood , the jayanti bridge is totally washed out & the railway service is permanently stop....

Its correct that the project for RVK-Jayanti Broad Gauge Rly Line has been sanctioned recently but the place comes under the jurisdiction of Buxa Tiger Reserve & if the track is to be laid, then it has to pass through the Core Area of the forest, which has rich population of Tigers,Elephants,Peacock & Bison are some of the animals which can be predominantly seen even from the existing section of APDJ-RVK which passes through Tiger Reserve ZOne.So getting clearance from MoEF is a huge challenge if they want to establish the Rail Connectivity b/w Buxa Fort with Rajabhatkhawa.
