What is " Rheostatic braking" of Conventional Locomotives of IR ?
Ans: A system of dynamic braking in which direct-current drive motors are used as generators and convert the kinetic energy of the motor rotor and connected load to electrical energy, which in turn is dissipated as heat in a braking rheostat connected to the armature.
In other words a method of

electric braking in which an electric motor operates as a generator. The kinetic energy of the motor rotor and connected load is dissipated in a starting rheostat or a special braking rheostat, and a braking torque is produced on the shaft of the machine. Rheostatic braking is usually used for the light braking or complete stoppage of a transport vehicle or moving mechanical system of comparatively small mass, where the amount of energy released in the braking is comparatively small.

Sir mine question about pantographs..,
I see that pantographs are stiff to their position...do they actually fixed or they themselves adjust according to the height of ohe wires. ..
Second Is there any time when pantographs become untouched with the wires when train is at high speed ..?if not then will it be harmful for engine or wires. ?
Third

in India do wires while moving on pantographs sweep the whole area like tgv or they just make contact on a particular part of pantographs...?
Pls reply sir if u have time..

Replies:
1 Pantographs are adjustable according to the Hieght of OHE Wires. They are designed in that manner.
2 As I have seen Pantographs always attached to OHE(OHE is also known as CATENARY) even the Train is at High Speed. If Pantographs are not attached to OHE then Current Supply will be stopped to the Engine & it is fatal for the Train & Loco if in a High Speed.

Wires Contact to a Particular Part of the Pantographs always not to the entire portion of the Pantograph.
These rules are same not for IR but for any Railways of this universe.

For 3 rd point sir I would say just see this video of tgv @ 574.8 kmph test ..I think u have already seen many times ...
From time 00:55 mins to 1:10 mins ..the motion of catenary wire on tgv's pantograph is shown ..in a ziz Zak manner ...on full contact area ...of pantograph ...click here
Not just at particular point ...on it

Yes absolutely.
In Indian Conditions too when the Locomotive is in Whining mode at high Speed trembling also like the above Video then you can see Catenary Wire touch the entire Panto. But in general a specific portion is touched.

1. Pantographs are self-adjusting. They will adjust according to the height of the OHE wire.
2. Yes. Pantographs can lose contact with the OHE wire. This is very common. When observing electric locos, you can see usually see sparks at the point where the pantograph touches the overhead wire. You can observe this more often during the fog season when there isn't a good contact between the OHE and the panto due to ice/water on the wires. Such loss of contact causes something called 'arcing' ( basically the sparks you see between the panto and the OHE) which reduces current collection and overtime, causes damage to the pantograph. Note that this is an unavoidable phenomenon and pantographs are designed to tolerate this

arcing. It is not fatal to the train in anyway and the train can keep running smoothly with no difference in the ride quality, just that the Panto maintenance will be more costly and the current collecting strips on the pantographs will have to be replaced more often.
3. They don't sweep the whole area, but close to 60% of the pantograph length is used for contact. Overhead wire will always be in a straight line. Thus at curves, the wire will not stay in the exactly in the center of the tracks, but deviate towards either side, thereby covering most of the pantograph. Even in straight line sections, the poles are switched from one side of the track to the other at regular intervals so that the wires sweep over some length of the panto instead of continuously sweeping against the same spot. This reduces the wear and tear of the current collecting strips and also improves current collection ability.
