THE INDIAN Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) plans to hire a fresh contractor to supply food in the premium Tejas Express by August, railway officials said. Food provided by only one contractor will then be made available across the entire route.
At present, while breakfast for the journey towards Karmali is supplied from the base kitchen at Chhatarapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), food for the remaining route is supplied from the base kitchen at Ratnagiri . As per the initial menu proposed, an effort was made to provide food famous in the Konkan belt.
“It

is our aim to serve delicacies originating from the Konkan belt to the passengers. The new contractor will be licenced to handle the catering for the entire route of the train. We will float tenders for the same by next month,” said Pinakin Morawala, public relations officer, IRCTC.
Passengers of Tejas Express, inaugurated last month, had offered mixed reviews about the quality of food being offered. While some had issues about the meals being served late, others complained that the quantity offered was unimpressive.
“We did not find the food quality to be great or even above average. As we pay more than other trains for the food here, we wanted it to be better in taste, or at least warm. But what was served was cold. Also, no specific cuisine was served, as promised. It is only recently that they have started serving lunch, a feature not introduced before,” claimed Raj Bhavsar, a commuter.
Others too had issues with the taste of the food. “The dal in particular was below average. While the other amenities offered in the train are nice, some changes in the food can be introduced,” said Himanshu Siloiya, another Tejas commuter.
“We have been taking feedback of passengers to understand their likes and dislikes, and eating preferences. The new contractor will make the due investment in infrastructure to ensure commuters get hot and fresh food. We will offer the contract only to a registered dealer with a valid certificate,” said a senior IRCTC official.
Officials now plan to replace certain items on the menu with food popular in the region. “We plan to introduce sabudana khichadi, replace chaas/lassi with solakadi and offer kokam sarbat to commuters instead of fruit juice,” the official added. The new menu would be in place before the Ganapati festival, during which the train is expected to see maximum crowd.

According to reports, in the first phase, Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express and Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express was selected by the Indian Railway authority to give a revamp, which will start from September 26.
In a statement, a railway authority officer said quoted, “The Railways have decided to launch Operation Swarn (or ‘gold’) to refurbish its services after several complaints by passengers like delay in train arrival, sanitation, and quality of food”.

Mumbai: Commuters, who have been waiting for the much-delayed Andheri-Goregaon extension of Harbour line, can finally hope that it would be operational by November as a trial run was successfully held on Saturday.
The trial run conducted by officials of the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) between Andheri and Goregaon was successful, and all the technical issues were cleared.
The Andheri-Goregaon extension on Harbour line is a part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) II. Around five to seven lakh commuters will benefit from the extension daily, and it will

also help to decongest other stations such Andheri and Vile Parle that have recorded one of the highest footfall on the Western Railway (WR). The trail was conducted by running an engine between the Harbour's Andheri and Goregaon section as the final technical parameters were completed.
The engine ran without any glitch, and one of the major doubts of the alignment of the railway tracks was finally resolved. An MRVC official said, “The trial is important as the ground on which the tracks have been laid must be in exact accordance with what the state and railways have agreed upon.”
He also said, “This section has to be integrated with the already existing WR line. It is a historic accomplishment as it was completed in a space-starved city like Mumbai.”
The trail was conducted in the presence of officials from three railway bodies — CR, WR and MVRC. The success of the project was met with unbridled jubilation. An impromptu bhoomipoojan was also held.
The MRVC's chief managing director (CMD), Prabhat Sahai said, "We conducted a trial of the line on Saturday evening, and after it's success, we are confident that the services on this section will be operationally by November end." "The line will be now inspected by the commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), who will examine whether it is adhering to all the parameters set by the Indian Railways. Mr Sahai also added, "We have given ourselves enough cushion time by conducting the trail now, so after the CRS' inspection the line will be operational in November."
The MRVC is the executing body of all MUTP projects approved by the Indian Railways.

Twitter grouse to Rail Ministry prompts policeman to single man out for bag search, interrogation; he writes fresh plaint, tagging Suresh Prabhu
Rajat Mital was travelling by the Hyderabad–CST Mumbai train on Saturday and, while passing through the Daund railway station, he noticed several unauthorised vendors crowding into his coach. They harassed the passengers, bullying them into buying their food products. Irked by their nagging, Mital shot off a tweet to the Railway Ministry.
Mital tweeted, “@RailMinIndia too many unauthorised vendors in AC coach of 17032. No security of luggage. No police in

the train. It is ridiculous.” Little did he know that at the very next stop, Pune railway station, he would be accosted by a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official, interrogated and his baggage searched without any rhyme or reason. Fed up of such ill treatment, Mital complained about the episode to railway minister Suresh Prabhu through his Twitter handle.
A shocked Mital, who works for a pharmaceutical company and has to travel frequently for that, told Pune Mirror, “I was going to Mumbai in the AC two-tier coach — B2. When the train was passing through Daund railway station, many unauthorised vendors carrying food items and tea entered our coach, forcing passengers to buy their products. Irritated by that, I immediately complained to the Indian Railway Ministry through my Twitter handle.”
Naturally, the railway ministry escalated the issue to the Pune railway division twitter handle and asked for Mital’s PNR number. “I was hoping that some policemen or railway ticket checker would come and take action on these illegal vendors in the coach, but nothing happened. By then, the train reached the Pune railway station around 9 am. So, I got down to purchase some food and was standing on the platform as the train hadn’t got the green light to get going. Suddenly, a person in civil dress came out of our coach looking for someone. He came to me and asked my name, berth number and said he wanted to check my luggage. He said he was from the RPF, so I went inside and showed him my entire luggage. Despite repeatedly asking him the reason for such an impromptu search, he maintained that it was a routine check. But, he specifically targeted me in the entire coach and checked all my stuff, pulling them out one by one. No one else’s luggage was searched in the entire coach. After he was done, he went out and mingled with the crowd. I was so stunned by this experience that I began doubting whether he was really an RPF personnel or not,” rued Mital.
Infuriated over the incident, he again took to his Twitter handle, this time complaining directly to railway minister Prabhu about his ordeal. “@sureshprabhu @drmpune on above complaint I was harassed by police, checking my baggage. Only I was in entire coach,” wrote Mital.
A perplexed Mital added, “Why did that person come in search of me in particular, and why did he only interrogate me and search only my luggage is my question to the railway administration. Curiously, no action was taken on the vendors, which was my original complaint. I am going to take up this issue till the ministry level as I was mentally harassed by the railway administration and police during my journey. I followed that policeman after he got off the train, but he disappeared into the crowd.”
When Mirror contacted Pune divisional railway manager B K Dadabhoy, he said, “We have forwarded the matter to the concerned department of RPF’s Pune division and an inquiry will be done accordingly.” Speaking about the issue, RPF’s Pune division deputy commissioner L B Singh assured, “I will get a detailed report of this Twitter complaint lodged by passenger Mital and will also check with my police officials about what action was taken on his original complaint of unauthorised vendors. Also, I will personally check which RPF official went and checked his luggage. Only after getting proper details of the case will we take further action on whoever is responsible.”
