MUMBAI: For the first time since it was introduced, the CST-Jammu Tawi Holiday Special train that runs once a week from Mumbai departed on time on Friday. Passengers and consumer activists had been complaining since past several months about the train not departing on time.
The train departs from CST at 6.45am every Friday and is scheduled to reach Jammu Tawi at 6pm the following day. On its return journey, it leaves Jammu Tawi at 7.20am on Sunday and reaches CST at 6pm. Though railway officials could not confirm the exact date of the train's first run, Central Railway's archives show the inaugural journey took place on September 26, 2014.

Arun Saxena said, "Several passengers had approached me to complain about the train not leaving on time, forget reaching the destination on time. It's not about a one- or two-hour delay; the train is almost always late by more than 8-to-10 hours."
Saxena raised the issue on social media besides initiating a correspondence with the railway ministry to seek refund for passengers if the train was delayed by more than three hours. "For the first time, it left on time on Friday and by the time it reached Delhi, the delay was only of one hour," he said.
Passenger Shellie Kashyap, who has travelled on the train, said, "On June 11 (Sunday), the train was scheduled to reach New Delhi at 4.40pm. Instead, it arrived on Monday at 6.15am. On another day, the train was supposed to reach Nashik at 1.50pm but reached almost 12 hours later. To add to our woes, the pantry car operators were charging Rs 120 for a vegetarian meal whose rate is fixed at Rs 35."
The train has received several bad reviews from commuters. Saxena said, "With such a pathetic reputation, people do not want to travel on this train and it is possible to get confirmed tickets even few hours before departure."
A railway official also conceded, "I have myself seen the train running late by 10 hours to 20 hours on some days."
Central Railway's chief pubic relations officer Sunil Udasi said, "We are trying our best to ensure that the trains run on time

THE INDIAN Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) plans to hire a fresh contractor to supply food in the premium Tejas Express by August, railway officials said. Food provided by only one contractor will then be made available across the entire route.
At present, while breakfast for the journey towards Karmali is supplied from the base kitchen at Chhatarapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), food for the remaining route is supplied from the base kitchen at Ratnagiri . As per the initial menu proposed, an effort was made to provide food famous in the Konkan belt.
“It

is our aim to serve delicacies originating from the Konkan belt to the passengers. The new contractor will be licenced to handle the catering for the entire route of the train. We will float tenders for the same by next month,” said Pinakin Morawala, public relations officer, IRCTC.
Passengers of Tejas Express, inaugurated last month, had offered mixed reviews about the quality of food being offered. While some had issues about the meals being served late, others complained that the quantity offered was unimpressive.
“We did not find the food quality to be great or even above average. As we pay more than other trains for the food here, we wanted it to be better in taste, or at least warm. But what was served was cold. Also, no specific cuisine was served, as promised. It is only recently that they have started serving lunch, a feature not introduced before,” claimed Raj Bhavsar, a commuter.
Others too had issues with the taste of the food. “The dal in particular was below average. While the other amenities offered in the train are nice, some changes in the food can be introduced,” said Himanshu Siloiya, another Tejas commuter.
“We have been taking feedback of passengers to understand their likes and dislikes, and eating preferences. The new contractor will make the due investment in infrastructure to ensure commuters get hot and fresh food. We will offer the contract only to a registered dealer with a valid certificate,” said a senior IRCTC official.
Officials now plan to replace certain items on the menu with food popular in the region. “We plan to introduce sabudana khichadi, replace chaas/lassi with solakadi and offer kokam sarbat to commuters instead of fruit juice,” the official added. The new menu would be in place before the Ganapati festival, during which the train is expected to see maximum crowd.
