I don't know about other trains - but I think 3X3 or 6 to a row. It is definitely not 4X4 , that is impossible. this excellent youtube video gives you an inside look at Shatabdi & Garib Rath chair car trains. At least you can see from the video that it is impossible to have more than 3X3 in any train.  @first blogger: but wat abt d chair car of intercity exp? Simply blasts from Karjat 2 Kalyan ............best train 2 travel on between Pune & Mumbai..........even the timings are convenient ......... is Charcar has A/c, what is the difference between General class and Chair car General class has no reservations. in some day trains like janshatabdi there are resrvations for Sitting (2s-Sitting) and are non-air conditioned. CC is AC Chair Car. Thanks for this kind hearted person for his reply.
