It's called a 'Check Rail'. Usually you can see these on the inner side of curves. If a train derails on a curve, it will tend to move over the outer rail ( The wheel will climb over the outer edge of the curve). In that case, the inner wheel will touch this check rail and stop further outward movement. You can see these kinds of rails at points and switches also, where trains switch tracks.
Both terms are interchanged frequently. But normally, the term 'Guard rails' is used for the cases where there are 2 inner rails. These are usually seen on bridges and belo FOB's etc. The 'term 'check rail' is usually used for the cases like in the above pic, where the extra rail is on only one side of the tracks. However, there is no fixed definition for these terms I guess and I have seen people use both terms to refer to such track layouts.

Hi, friends here is a trip report... DOJ : 10-07-2015 (Friday) From Howrah.Jn (HWH) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). === Beginning === Started from my native house in Mahendralalnagar (MHLN) to catch a train to Howrah. EMU train journey was smooth as expected (pic 01) with some actions starting from Santragachi.Jn, here saw Mumbai Mail's coach being ready to be taken to departure (pic... more...
02,03). To enter Howrah.Jn we had to wait for some good 15-20 mins near Chandmari Bridge (GT Rd), spotted here Howrah Mail's (via ALD) empty rake being moved accross the coach care depot, along with it RPF personnel roaming near Yuva Express's empty coaches & besides an empty MEMU moved (pic 04,05). We reached HWH at around 19:00 Hrs with a brief halt at Howrah outer for clearance to platform and finally we were let in over pf#17. ==> Observations at HWH New Complex : To my astonishment, something good happened as I won't have to lift the heavy luggage all the way from old complex to new one. We (me & dad) slowly glided with luggages near pf# 23 & decided to wait at platform itself as waiting area over new complex was pathetic with people laying here & there over floor (pic 06), to me it symbolized as a govt hospital & patients awaiting to get bed! Anyhow let's put it to rest and proceed to some rail spotting! When we arrived at that time Ispat Express's loco was passing from pf#18, Puri bound Jagannath Express was departing with a loud honk behind a WAP-4 SRC (pic 07). Later over pf# 21 Mumbai Mail (via NGP) was brought behind an orange WDM-3A KGP alco, but surprise is yet to come as that day's Mumbai Mail was coupled with a WAP-4 ET (pic 08,09), over pf# 22 was Yesvantpur Express brough with WAP-4 SRC (pic 10), as soon as Mumbai bound Mail departed a WAP-4 HWH brought in Mumbai Duronto Express over pf# 19, as it was already nearly 20:30 Hrs (pic 11), I didn't roam much & came to have a look over dad, as soon we moved further to take position to board train, a WDS-6 shunter (pic 12). To my delight the coach which we were to board was 2013 built with cellphone charging ports (pic 13)! Still I was unhappy as we didn't had any Lower Berth (LB), we positioned our luggages & I ran to fill some RO water. In time our dinner arrived (pic 14,15) & we started some chit-chatting with co-passengers (as I was trying my best to get a LB for me!), within some minutes only, before departure of train I got myself a LB in exchange for MB from a girl, whom was my co-passenger. ==> Post departure of train : At sharp 21:15 Hrs I was waiting for a jerk but that didn't happen, so we departed late by 10 mins & as soon as we crossed Santragachi to gain some speed rains played spoil sport, so now option to me was to listen to dad's yelling & finish the dinner. By the time we crossed Panskura, I had my dinner & cellphone was put over charge! Kharagpur came and gone with just 1 min halt (pic 16), don't know why 5 mins of halt was cut down to 1 min. Midnapur was arrived before time so halt was much more plus a delayed departure by 8-10 mins (pic 17,18). Thereafter the run post Midnapur was too good at around 90-100KMPH that too sometimes admist rains, but being a nocturnal being, I'd gone to sleep to wake up to an unscheduled halt at Garhbeta, thereafter kept myself awake till Bankura, then direct woke up when we were crossing Jharkhand-Odisha border at Jaraikela. Rourkela arrived almost ontime (pic 19,20) & after brief halt, we departed to gain rapid speed (pic 21) with crossing of Brahmani river near Panposh (pic 22,23). Thereafter we were cruizing through plesant surroundings of Sundargarh district (pic 24,25,26). Jharsuguda arrived as expected before time, so had an extended halt (pic 27,28). Departed from from here to cross another river named - Ib, (pic 29,30) which was flowing near to danger mark! After that we crossed a coal mine, private siding & saw a coal loaded train (pic 31,32,33), later over took freights at various location, crossed with freighter before Belpahar (pic 34,35), then crossed Hemgir forest range in high speed (pic 36,37). Again a coal mine appeared & a twin WAG-7 BKSC (pic 38), later a twin WAG-7 TATA hauled freighter crossed us just before Raigarh (pic 39). After halt at Raigarh (pic 40), there was amazing scenery outside (pic 41). Now run till Bilaspur.Jn was non stop along with station skippings & river crossings (pic 42,43). Bilaspur arrived well only with 5 mins delay, here saw Puri bound Kalinga Utkal Express (pic 44), later when gone to take snaps of our train's loco was surprised to find a WAP-4 of Vadodara shed was doing wonders since last night (pic 45)! After halt we departed, gained moderate speed, crossed Sheonath river (Shivnath) (pic 46), further Nagpur Bilaspur Intercity Express with WAP-7 BIA crossed us at Baikunth (pic 47, 48). As Raipur neared our speed decreased, saw a BHEL built WAG-7 JHS Tiger strips joining mainline from Raipur loopline (pic 49), Raipur.Jn arrived by some 25 mins late, here are some snaps (pic 50,51,52). Work of changing of rail lines was going on after Raipur (pic 53), just after Sarona saw WAM-4 BSL waiting for green with Pune Bilaspur Express (pic 54). We crossed Durg ELS (pic 55,56,57) and before entering Durg saw a red bright WAP-4 BSL loco with head lights on with dirty rakes Azad Hind Express (pic 58,59), while over pf# 2 of Durg was an empty rake of EMU stabled here at Durg (pic 60). Our IRI member#676636 & my friend Amit Kumar Singh was to arrive with lunch but unfortunately he didn't turn up & eventually I had to satisfy myself on some pantry food at last! Well just after crossing a river spotted a freighter with BHEL built Tiger strips WAG-7 JHS (pic 61), Rajnandgaon arrived & gone with seldom noticeable halt (pic 62) & just at outer met with Howrah Mail, which I was expecting after Dongargarh so pic clicking opportunity was wasted! Howrah Mail was attached with an extra coach may be HCPV or SLRD (pic 63,64). After Dongargarh, we overtook a WAG-9 AJNI hauled freighter at Paniyajob (pic 65,66), which is just before the commencement of border ghat range! Soon ghats started and train was snaking through lush green forests of Dongargarh - Khaara Reserve Forest Range (pic 67,68,69), which peculiar track sound which train was giving & this all continued till we crossed Bortalao (pic 70), where there is some amount of plain terrain & again ghat section started, this time more dense forests along with a small tunnel which we past through, later more curves & some monkey over trees (pic 71,72). Within some time we crossed ghat section to skip Darekasa - the first station of Maharashtra ! Here after we gained more speed to witness a lone blue WAG-7 ASN with freights slowly moving at Amgaon (pic 73), soon we had a halt at Gondia.Jn. Here saw a red colored train - perhaps might be track monitoring train, while arriving saw over farway a WDG-3A, WAM-4 BIA & a WAP-4 was stabled (pic 74,75). While departing away saw a WAP-7 BIA along with a WAM-4 BIA (pic 76), after Gondia we had non-stop terrific run, as here we were more than 30 mins late but arrived Nagpur ontime, saw Sanghamitra Express arriving (pic 77)! At Nagpur we arrived of pf#03 (pic 78), besides us over pf#02 was Sanghamitra Express, pf#01 was kept clear for Howrah bound Ahmedabad Express, in no time our dinners were delivered. We kept dinner to have it later, after some 20 mins of halt we departed from Nagpur to gain instead speed & at Ajni itself we were going at decent speed (pic 79), just then Howrah bound Ahmedabad Express crawled past us behind a WAP-4 SRC, some time later Gitanjali Express too blazed past us! Now till Wardha run was mediocre with occasional unscheduled halts as Bangalore bound Sanghamitra Express was before us, but after Wardha it was not good but great. Our co-passengers too had their food, which they probably brought from private vendor at Nagpur (pic 80) which they later threw away after eating half! Arrived Badnera.Jn (pic 81,82) late by 15 mins, with short halt we proceeded to Akola.Jn, now as there was dark outside so my primary concern was to have food! After Akola I'd gone to sleep to wake up at Bhusaval, but nor station announcements or tea vendors crazy shoutings could wake me up! so Bhusaval past without my knowledge & opened my eyes directly at Manmad.Jn, where we had unscheduled halt. Ultimately after being awake for sometime myself felt bored so again slept to wake up directly after at Kasara, may be previous day's too much of railfanning & sightseeing had taken toll over me! Just we were entering Kalyan.Jn, Tulsi Express behind a WAP-4 ET crossed us (pic 83,84,85), my co-passenger whose LB I'd exchanged got down & we were prepared to alight at Thane if train stops or else at last destination, so our full packaging was done & we departed from Kalyan. I was doorplating in the meantime Howrah bound Gitanjali Express crossed behind a WAP-4 (pic 86,87), thereafter we crossed Parsik Tunnel (pic 88) after Diva.Jn to arrive Thane crawling and finally with a skreech halted over pf#08, we took the advantage & alighted to see Gorakhpur bound Kashi Express over pf#07 halted (pic 89), while Samarsata Express departed (pic 90), and we came over to pf#09-10 (pic 91) and our trip ended happily! Thanks for reading, appologies for posting it too late & do provide feedbacks! (Pics coming in shortly)

Copy paste from Regular traveller of Super Deluxe Express. It was completely a case of handing over the rake for the BBS Raj which became daily during Didi's earlier tenure. The then 2101/02 had very good patronage almost throughout the year due to which the original 11 coach all AC rake went upto 16 coaches & frequency increased to 4 days a week. I had travelled regularly during my student undergrad days in both the 11 coach & the 16 coaches Deluxe exp. ... more...
Infact I had stuck out my neck saying at the time the inaugural run of the 12262 was happening from HWH( the time when it reached at 9.10am CST), that if the 2101/02 was persisted with in its all AC avataar & present run times & had the halts at G & CKP eliminated, there would have been no need for the Duronto....!!!
