OLD WINE IN NEW BOTTLE
Reposting perhaps the first ever trip report in IRI on a journey by a Duronto Exp undertaken by me in July 2011.
Vivek et al have been waiting with bated breath for an account of my journey by the HWH-NDLS Duronto and I am furnishing a detailed and ornamental narrative of my experiences. On Friday the 15th of July, while on the way from my office to Howrah Station, I decided to relinquish the services of my car at the banks of the River Hooghly opposite to Howrah Station. This was primarily to avoid the traffic congestion on the Howrah Bridge and the station premises and also as a time-saving measure. I, therefore, availed myself of the ferry service. A monsoon-drenched river in full flow

with an accompanying drizzle was a sight to behold. Much akin to a sensuous Mandakini in bathing attire or rather the lack of it in late Raj Kapoor’s RAM TERI GANGA MAILI, if I were to borrow from the colourful vocabulary and style of RAILFAN86.
Reached Howrah at 11.50 am, 70 mns ahead of the scheduled departure of my train. Was loitering in both the Old and New Complexes in search of the SER timetable. Finally found one at the Wheeler’s bookstall at the New Complex. This was in addition to the TAAG which already formed part of my modest luggage of one shoulder bag. At 12.20 I went back to the Old Complex Platform 9, which was the scheduled platform for my train to depart, but I found it usurped by an illegal occupant, the VIBHUTI EXPRESS, which had just arrived at 12.10 pm, more than 4 hours late.
And true to its infamous reputation, Howrah Station lived up to its tradition of last minute changes of the platform for arriving/departing trains, much to the chagrin and discomfort of the public. While all display boards indicated that the New Delhi Duronto would depart from Platform No. 9, there was an announcement at 12.30 pm that the departure will be from Platform No. 8. This resulted in a mad scramble among the waiting passengers. Fortunately both these platforms were on either side of the CAB ROAD and all one had to do was cross the road.
The term CAB ROAD is a bit of misnomer as CABS are not allowed to enter the CAB ROAD. The CAB ROAD is a unique feature of Howrah Station and I have not encountered this luxury elsewhere in India. If you go to Howrah station in a private car to board a train, you can enter the cab road by paying an entry fee of Rs. 100 and park your car in front of your coach, say B3, if you are lucky enough to find parking space. All you now have to do is walk 10 metres or thereabouts and board your coach. However, if you find parking space opposite B1, then just a few metres is required. Of course this is possible only if your train departs from platforms 8 or 9 of the Old Complex. A similar facility is available in platforms 21 and 22 of the New Complex. These 4 platforms are used for most of the prestigious trains like Rajdhanis, Kalka Mail, Poorva Express and the Durontos. Even otherwise, this facility is convenient if the train departs from any of the adjacent platforms as the extent of walking is minimised.
The empty rake of the 12273 Howrah Duronto Express trooped into Platform 8 at 12.35 pm and there was this unsemly surge to board the train as if it was a suburban local and would be leaving in the next 2 mns. After the initial rush was over I boarded and occupied my seat 59 in coach B3, having intentionally opted for an upper berth.

The Duronto rake was in its colourful Rajanikanth-Railneer-Poppins livery a la Vivek’s homespun description vide # 200216-36
[RAJNIKANTH Once Drank a TANK of RAIL NEER, ate a box of POPPINS(those colourful sweets...) and then he vomited.
Guess what happened ?
>The Duronto Got its Colour Scheme !]
>The coach composition was 1AC-1, 2AC-1, 3AC-4, Sleeper-9, PC-1 and the customary Guard-cum-luggage van.
> The train departed on the dot at 13 hrs but was slow to get off the block, taking 25 mns to cover the distance of 14 kms to

Dankuni.
> Thereafter, the loco shifted gears, hitting full throttle and hurtling past Burdwan at 1410 hrs (95 kms in 75 mns), Durgapur at 1450 hrs (158 kms in 110 mns) and Asansol at 1520 hrs (200 kms in 140 mns) . As soon as it crossed Asansol it moved over a bridge with a road underneath and I stood near the door to have a glimpse of the building where I stayed in a flat for 3 years from 1995-1998 during my tenure as Branch Manager, SBI, Asansol. Was overcome by nostalgia.
> Reached Dhanbad, the first technical halt at 1610 were it halted for 5 mns (258 kms in 190 mns)
> The next technical halt was Gaya at 1840 where again the train halted for 5 mns (458 kms in 340 mns) where dinner was picked up from the base kitchen.
> The third technical halt was for 10 mns at Mughalsarai at 2120 hrs ( 661 kms in 500 mns). By my reckoning the train was running 25 mns late then. Tried to get a copy of the NR timetable there but surprisingly it was not available at such a big station.
> The final technical halt according to the pantry car staff at Kanpur around 1 am but I was then fast asleep.
> At about 4 am the train had halted at the outer signal before Tundla Junction and then passé crossed the station 5 mns later. As the distance to NDLS was 204 kms from there, I knew that there was no possibility of arriving there at the STA of 605 am and in my own estimate the ETA was 630 am. I was 5 mns off target and it finally reached at 640 am, 35 mns late.
> As it passed Tilak Bridge and Shivaji Bridge, the NDLS-Lucnow Shatabdi and the Neelachal Express to Puri ambled past us.
>Upon arrival at NDLS the first things I did was to have a cup of tea and buy a copy of the Northern Railway timetable.
CATERING AND OTHER SERVICES
>Within 10 mns of the departure all passengers were provided with a bootle of RAILNEER
> Another 15 mns later it was followed by 2 chocolates (no, not POPPINS) and a welcome drink, a chice between a cold drink and tea/coffee.
> By 1.30 pm, the TTE, dressed like a corporate executive, came and autographed the tickets. He checked my e-ticket but neither bothered to ask for the ID-proof or verify my newly-acquired status as a senior citizen. Unlike to Saurabhsunny25, may be I didn’t appear to him as a DUDE .
> At 1.45 it was the turn of tomato soup, Amul butter and bread sticks.
> Lunch was served at 2.30 pm and it consisted of salad, rice, rotis, dal and a paneer curry (chicken for the non-veggies), followed by mishti doi (sweet curd). Dessert comprised one laddu and ice cream, both of which I politely declined as neither ghee nor cream is good for my heart.
> There was a break in service till 5 pm when the hustle bustle started afresh. A sandwich, a packet of Haldiram’s Moong Dal, 2 biscuits and a choice of tea or coffee was the fare for evening tiffin time.
> The staff were polite and helpful and readily obliged me without extra charge when I wanted another cuppa of tea at about 7 pm, although they were quick to point out that “There was nothing official about it”
> Dinner was a repeat of what was served for lunch starting with the soup at 7.30 m and ending with ice cream at 8.15 pm except that this time around there were 2 small laddus in lieu of a big one and may be in keeping with the darkness of the NIGHT there was BLACK DAL instead of plain YELLOW DAL.
> The quantity of food served was AMPLE and the quality GOOD.
> Last but not the least, the IRTCT staff finally offered AFTER MINT and toothpicks to the passengers and took TIPS from those who were willing to oblige.
COACHES AND CLEANLINESS
> The coaches were the LHB types and spick and span with no cockroaches, mice and other sundry pests.
> The toilets were neat and clean and spruced up periodically.
> The train was packed but there were no hangers-on in the form of WL passengers.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Was an excellent journey and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was my second Duronto trip, having travelled from Howrah to Mumbai in July 2010.
Thanks all for going through this extremely long 2-part narrative. If it made painful reading, composing it and typing it out with one hand was even more painful. But I was nonetheless eager to share my experience on board the 12273 Howrah-New Delhi Duronto Express.
