Northeast Frontier METER GAUGE Train (End of a Glorious Era) NFR MG click here
.
The Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) Meter Gauge Line from Lumding to Badarpur also known as the Barak Valley, a 221-km railway track that was built by the British through the most difficult terrains and mountains in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was also an engineering marvel comprising of 37 tunnels and 586 bridges that came in to operations in the year 1903.The line was primarily constructed to transport tea, coal and timber produced in the

upper Assam region.Post the Partition of Bangladesh in 1947 the Lumding-Badarpur section however became the only life-line for land-locked Tripura, Mizoram, the Barak Valley in southern Assam as also south-eastern Manipur due to the borders.
.
The 111 year old MG line became history in 2014 to make way for a broad gauge track as a part of the uni-gauge Project of Indian Railways. Presently Broad Gauge Services have began on this line initially Freight Services were started and now the Passenger and Express Trains have become functional connecting the Northeast to the rest of India. Lumding-Badarpur section belongs to the Lumding division of Northeast Frontier Railways. Badarpur is a important Junction from where the lines branch towards Silchar and Agartala.
The video is a compilation of the Train Journey on the Meter Gauge Brarak Valley Express from Lumding to Silchar. Enjoy the true rich beauty of the least explored North East.
.
The MG Trains that ran on this section are Lumding - Silchar Cachar Express and Barak Valley Express, Lumding - Agartala Express and the Lumding - Halflong Hill Queen Express. The line is highly dominated by the Freight Trains.

A Spectacular Journey aboard the Barak Valley Exp. - Part 1 (Feb. 25, 2013) : A compilation of select footage from an exhilarating journey by the Barak Valley Exp. from Lumding to Badarpur. For nearly 11 hours, me and my companions were in paradise, as the train cut through the Barail range and played hide-n-seek with the Jatinga river. Metre Gauge trips don't get better than this!! Part 1 covers the ride till Harangajao. [22 mt. video]

Arriving at Maibang - 15693 Barak Valley Exp. (Feb. 25, 2013) : Video starts off with the train negotiating a massive curve, eliciting some "wow"s from Colin and myself. Soon after that, we were at Maibang outer. The loco accelerated with the usual accompaniment of smoke-n-sounds and then pulled into a fairly crowded platform.

Barak Valley Exp. departs from Badarpur towards Lumding (Feb. 26, 2013) : On hearing the horn, Harsh and I rushed towards PF2, just in time to witness the Barak Valley Exp. departing towards Lumding. Being the only daytime train in the Badarpur-Lumding section, the train was packed.

Broad Gauge Railway Line link to Silchar is finally ready.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
In the last two days, the CRS has inspected the BG line from Lumding to Badarpur and Silchar. It is understood that this route will be opened for passenger traffic shortly. It has been a particularly tortuous conversion (even worse than that of Hassan-Mangalore) which has stretched on since 1997.
Various acts

of terrorism (including attacks on trains as well as construction sites), heavy monsoon rains as well as apathy from various Central governments did not help either. Here we see the distance tables for the BG and MG lines. Note that there is a completely new alignment in the central portion, bypassing Haflong and its circle round the hill. A total of 16 km has been reduced. Some stations have been left out while new stations have been added. These are marked in bold.
Here you can see the beginning of the diversion from Migrendisa. Of course, if you follow the line right from Lumding you will see quite a difference in alignments. In some cases like Migrendisa the BG and MG stations are at different locations. You can follow the route down to Bandarkhal to see the different alignments clearly.

Jatinga is a sort of tourist spot because of the birds which are bent on ending their lives there, though it is not really a mystery.

Another odd point is a station with the typical North Indian name of Kalachand, among exotic names more reminiscent of East Asia.
At the time of writing there is no service between Badarpur and Karimganj (which is still under conversion), while one pair of MG passenger trains are running between Karimganj and Agartala.
The Lumding-Badarpur route has a long and not very happy history. (However, the Badarpur-Silchar section is in the plains and does not have any particular problem with the terrain). The former was considered as a major operational bottleneck, with abut 18 km of 1:37 gradient which is now eliminated. It was a major supply route during World War 2, with supplies being shipped from Chittagong port to Upper Assam, where a number of airstrips in the Dibrugarh area were supplying China over the Himalayas. And there were the army operations in what is now Nagaland and Manipur. The Japanese came close to capturing Dimapur, which may have resulted in the fall of much of North-eastern India. Here are a couple of pictures from that time:
The full caption reads: …crossing the Detokcherra Bridge on the Bengal Assam Railway. The pipeline on the near side of the bridge is the Chittagong-Lumding pipeline.
These pictures are from a book “Line of Communication” by John Thomas (1947) which gives a comprehensive picture of railway operations east of Calcutta during the war, when most of the running was taken over by the US armed forces. At that time the old stalwarts the Eastern Bengal Railway and the Assam Bengal Railway had been merged into the Bengal & Assam Railway for the purpose of better coordination in wartime. There was plenty of reorganization again in 1947. I will cover more about the earlier history later.

NFR MG PART-1
The MOST BEAUTIFUL & RISKY Rail Route of INDIAN RAILWAYS : North East click here
.
This is one of the most adventurous, scenic , most beautiful and the most riskiest Meter Gauge Rail Road of the Indian Railways - North East Frontier Zone located in the Indian State of Assam.
.
...

This was one of the terrains which I wanted to explore since ages and luck finally struck me when it was high time for the section to undergo Broad Gauge Conversion . Never the late I made it .
.
The video will justify why this section is known as the most beautiful stretch, how ever what is so risky about this Section ?
.
There are two kinds of risk that one can encounter in this section.
.
The first one being frequent Land slides which can leave your train stranded in the midst of the dense forests for several hours or even days until restoration. The terrain receives the highest rain fall round the year. The road connectivity is very poor and is not easily accessible from the Rail route.
.
The second one being a major risk with the presence of local insurgent - terrorist groups living deep inside the forests who often tend to harm the travelers and Railway authorities .
.
There have been several instances from the recent past that these activist groups have opened fire at a approaching train, brutally killing people on board the train for valuables and money, kidnapping the Security Personnel's , bomb blasts on moving trains, blowing off Railway tracks , vandalizing railway property and many more such devastating incidents . This is one of the main reasons why the tourists fear to explore this dangerous section .
.
With extreme risk surrounding this corridor, I still dared to take a chance to explore this section . The most daring and the thrilling part of this trip was Foot plating all alone on the YDM-4 Locomotive in the dense forests and ghats sections. I bet this journey was the most memorable & thrilling one I've ever had in my life so far.
.
The video is shot on board the Lumdning - Silchar - Lumding Barak Valley Express. The video covers the scenic spots from River Dyang , Haflong hill, Jatinga ,Harangajao & Barak River. Hope you enjoy the North East.
